Grundig Satellit 800 Millennium Shortwave Radio on LSB 7138 Khz: Ham Operators Conversation
The Grundig really sounds excellent, to be fair the speaker on the DX394 is terrible, but with headphones or an external speaker it improves, but frankly the Satellit 800 is superb ! Thanks for uploading this my friend.
@AnthonyJones-vk6xq Thank You for watching!! I couldn't agree more on the speakers for both. Since I live in a condo, I mainly use nice headphones but the Grundig has great sound. The DX-394 not so much. Lol
This signal is propagating better than broadcast stations pushing 100KW.
Unreal.
slippery nipple radio
I just want to give you a tip because we have the same equipment I own the AN 100 because it had a more secure base and it will sit directly on top of the left side of the satellite 800 and it will turn the signal much stronger on a.m. stations. It’s very precise a good piece of kit I have seen videos of these radios being disassembled and the a.m. antenna is inside on the upper left
@understandingtruth10 Mahalo!! I have the video of this antenna and the Grundig coming up. What I have been finding is the signal strength is improved but because I live in the middle of the Pacific, getting different stations is very difficult. Lol
Often the antenna jacks on portables only work on SW not MW, not sure if that is the case when there was no difference unplugged
@dave10524 Thank You for watching. That would explain it though and it makes sense. I have a few more videos coming using other radios too. 🤙🏻
That's what I like about the Tecsun PL-330 and PL-368. They have a keypress that disables the internal ferrite antenna, and engages the external antenna jack.
@KG7M_OR That's a nice feature. I almost bought a Tecaun 880 but went with the C. Crane Skywave SSB2 since I really wanted weather too.
You should also check out the , 2024 New K-30WLA Active Loop Broadband Receiving Antenna 0.1M-30MHz For SDR Radio. Not sure if you have heard
@understandingtruth10 No, I haven't. I will have to do a search for that one. Mahalo!!
@ Just to let you know I ordered this from AliExpress for $58 because I read an article about how good it was compared to the MLA 30 I will be doing a video in the future when it shows up
@understandingtruth10 Great, can't wait to see the video.
@ thanks for the power adapter info you told me about because the other that I’m waiting on was lithium batteries and another adapter on Amazon that can easily be returned the problem I was having is you could clearly hear a difference between batteries and static when you went to short wave I’ve even heard reports that the original had a ground in the power wire but if that adapter you showed me comes to clear I’ll buy it
@ also I purchased a replacement speaker it’s supposed to be an easy solder job and gives you a lot better audio quality FaitalPRO 4FE35 4" Professional Woofer 4 Ohm This is for the Grundig satellite 800
I just recently purchased one of these I’m having real problems getting a proper power adapter. ruclips.net/video/QPIoHwiuiIE/видео.htmlsi=56nKcO-qo9ugMDub
@understandingtruth10 Aloha and Thanks for Watching. Below is the link for the one I use. I haven't had any issues as you can see from my videos. There is a guy on Ebay that has units also and he is very knowledgeable. I will post that link too if I can find it. @ Thank you I’ve already returned two of them because for whatever reason on shortwave there is static. I will put this on my watchlist I’ve already ordered another if it fails and I have to send it back I’ll try this one
@@Ponokaiguy Thank you for the information , I will go home and purchase this unit since it’s only $15 total cost hopefully mine works well like yours with it, I did not feel like spending $30 for the other guys lol kind of pricey might as well buy six lithium ion rechargeable batteries for that
I’m just waiting for shipping now

Nice catch. I hear this one and another on 5263. There's a CODAR website that shows every location of the CODAR antennas around the country. CODAR measures and maps near surface ocean currents in coastal waters.

Very nice, got a Dx394 here aswell, nice little receiver as long as you keep the RF Gain about half way......glad i found the channel, subscribed !
@AnthonyJones-vk6xq Thank You for watching and Subscribing!! I live on the small Hawaiian island of Molokai in a condo so my antenna choices are limited. So far the MLA-30+ has worked well sitting on my lanai. I'm always adjusting that RF Gain on the DX-394. I may try a couple modifications on it. If I do I will post videos. I like the little receiver too. I try to mix up the videos between my Radio and I have the DX-394 on the same Green Light MLA-30+ Antenna.
To me, it sounds like CODAR (the duck sounds), and the tone sounds like a beacon overlaping it. I don't know which beacon that is, I'm kinda curious since I've yet to receive a beacon on SW. There were/are a few on LW
@Joseph-l6m8q Big Mahalo Joseph and Thank You for watching and your knowledge. I just started catching some of these different transmissions and I have no experience with any of them so thanks again for your expertise. 🤙🏻
UK Amazon are selling blue light version on Prime £38.99. They also sell others direct from China suppliers with UK warehouses. I am surprised a different colour light gives a different signal strength though, any idea?, the ANT Power on button only should work on USB Charge, so if you are using a SDR with a bias T use that then it should not come and unless another component has been changed there should it affect the signal?
@steveblanchard7293 Thank You so much for watching and your comment. The thought on the color is that it's a different manufacturer so different parts and made differently. So not just the light color causing the difference but the light can help tell the difference between the two. It's not a charg. It's a power supply. So, no power if not plugged in.
Simple device. Solidly made. If you happen to get one that doesn't peak signals, take the base apart -- it snaps apart -- and re-solder the connections to the tuner cap. I have an AN-200 and it works well.
Nice Jeff! I'm looking forward to the next segment on the AN200. Also, nice score on getting a discontinued Grundig model. Perfect for you subreddit. 73, Mike
@@KG7M_OR Big Mahalo!!🤙🏻
I've been curious about this antenna, looking forward to your review.
@radio645 Thanks for Watching!! I'll be doing a few reception videos with different radios.🤙🏻
I have a Grundig 800, a Commtel (Radio Shack) 225 and a much older Sanyo RP8880 pure analogue radio, the Big Sanyo is the better receiver out of the 3 and has the better audio. All 3 sets pick up Radio Romania and China Radio well enough with the Commtel being the weakest of the 3 sets overall when using a long wire antenna.
@georgebarnes8163 Thanks for Watching!! I live in a condo so my antenna choices are limited. Right now the MLA-30+ works well but I'm always trying different types.🤙🏻
Thank you so much for posting this you’re answering my questions directly. I really want you to look at one more cheap antenna it’s $60 on AliExpress 0.1MHz to 30MHz K-30WLA active ring broadband receiving antenna: SDR radio Apparently it’s much better than the green or blue lite versions, and comes with its own lithium battery.
Yes the MLA30s can throw out too much gain under some conditions, so cutting the gain is a real good idea. Also if you are comparing the 2 antennas, separate them as much as you can to prevent inadvertant interaction between the 2. Very useful idea.
@michaelagner4355 Mahalo for your post and Thanks for Watching. I am limited on my space here in my condo so the furthest I could separate them was 12 feet. That's how far apart they were for the videos. I posted some pictures of them right next to each other but that was just to show the physical differences. 🤙🏻
After watching your video, I went outside and made the adjustment on the active loop box mounted on the fence, it seemed to change the reception for the better and killed some of the noise on the radio. Still in the testing phase but it seems to work, thanks for the tip.
@radio645 Thank You for watching!! Keep me updated if anything changes. Aloha🤙🏻
@@Ponokaiguy sure will! I lived on the Big Island in 2007 for a while, wasn't into radios at the time.
@radio645 That's great. We were just there in May. I just started into Shortwave a few months ago. Since I live in a condo, I am very limited in my antenna choices. I've been very happy with the MLA-30+ antennas.
Thank you so much. You inspired me and I finally ordered one.
Have had my 800 for over 20 years. The backlight no longer works but this reciever remains one of my favorites. I often joke with people saying my radio is bigger than my TV. 😄
@christianwootton100 lol, it's close to being true. Lol Glad to hear it's been dependable. Thanks for Watching. 🤙🏻
Conditions must be better tonight.
Nice video. Despite the strong signal (according to the meter), it sounds weak still. I'm probably just noticing the interference. It's definitely an enjoyable signal level, though.
@Joseph-l6m8q Yes, the interference may be causing that. Also, I live in a condo and do these videos late at night so I don't have the volume up too much.🤙🏻
Hey brother, please help me i send you a mesage

Nice. I was picking those up on the 4 MHz band a few days ago, but haven't heard them since.
Sounds the same to me.
@@forgetyourlife Yes, this one is the closest. On the other videos, you can see a big difference in the signal strength on the radios meter.🤙🏻
Great radio, works well for the stronger shortwave broadcasters. A clip on wire helps for me.
@SeanFlaherty Thank You for watching!! Yes, I agree.
Which one is better blue light or green in you opinion ?
@@understandingtruth10 The Green Light definitely gives a stronger signal.
I have the Blue light Version MLA 30+ I got of Aliexpres, and now I am wondering if I should buy the green light one. In your opinion which is better or are they about the same since you have had more time to experiment ? My blue light model seems to work real well. If anybody know a good antenna for shortwave that beats the MLA 30+ for around 150 USD or so please let me know, space is limited, I cannot use a long wire I do have a balcony in the city. Thanks God Bless
@understandingtruth10 I live in a condo so we are in a similar situation. I had the Blue light version first and it also worked well and then a viewer told me a out the Green Light "Original " version. The Green Light does give a stronger signal and therefore it does bring in more weaker stations. If you don't mind spending another $50, I would say it's worth getting the Green Light version. Have you adjusted the Gain and Attn pots in the Antenna and Bias boxes? That could helps some too. I will be doing a video on that also.🤙🏻
Good catch!
@KG7M_OR Thank You!! I had a few others also that I have to post yet.🤙🏻

blue for the win on this freq?
@TREEHUGGAH1 Yes, it was close on this frequency on the C. Crane Skywave SSB2. The Green Light MLA-30+ Antenna gives better signal strength overall but the Blue Light is not terrible by any means overall.
@@Ponokaiguy thanks for the tips. i have decent elevation and run long wire on sw. you have an excellent set up. much respect and happy dxing!73,KB3AUM

Seems like they have different gains. Hard to know if that is the circuit or whether the gain pot is just set differently between them.
@zenpharaohs Sorry, I should have mentioned that the gain ppt was adjusted on both of them so the difference is not because of that.👍
Which one do I have to buy and how do I know it's one or the other on an online shop? Thank you.

Ive heard that the blue light version of the MLA-30 may be an inferior knock off, with the green light version being the original and better product. Be careful where you buy.
@@harryholden9045 That's what I heard and the reason I decided to do this series.👍
My green light MLA30+ is a greenlight and it works really well. Note that the MLA30+ are directional antennae. That could have an impact.
@Teshub Thanks for Watching!! Good point, they are directional. I have mine at about a 45 degree angle with the loop parallel to the ground. After trying all other possibilities this works best overall for me in my location.
Wow Jeff, that is quite a difference. Is the "blue light" version a clone? I can actually still hear the station when you disconnect the antennas, it fades at first then the AGC brings it back up. I'd say the blue light model is a waste of money. What do you think?
@KG7M_OR Also, You can tell by the signal meter that the Green light is much stronger so you can really tell the difference while looking for weak signals. The Blue is a waste if you can get a Green Light but it can be difficult since no manufacturer or light color are listed in product descriptions.
Green higher signal, the blue one, open the box at the antenna,& adj internal screw counter clockwise 1/8 turn see if it improves!
@darrylb2053 I did that to both and they are both at their best settings. 👍
