BMW E70 Tailgate Latch Failure (Updated Fixed)
In my first video on how to fix a malfunctioning E70 rear door, I missed two place holder holes on the back of the slam plate. The initial fix works but it backs out of alignment after opening and closing the tailgate for a couple of weeks. This video is an update to address that issue.

2022 Grom Luggage Rack From G-Craft
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
I got tired of wearing a backpack everyday on my commute. At the time of filming there was no luggage racks for the 2022 Grom in stock in the US. I decided to order one from Japan and it has been great. I would recommend it. Tools used: Knipex Pliers Wrench and an Allen Screwdriver. 2022 Grom Rear Suspension Upgrade with YSS Gas Shock
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.2 года назад
The OEM rear suspension on my 2022 Honda Grom was hurting my back from bottoming out so much during my daily commute. I decided to upgrade with the YSS shock because it had good reviews and was reasonably priced. In this video I show the process for removing the old shock and installing the new one. Tools used: 12mm, 14mm, 17mm sockets and wrenches. Allen drivers, size 2 philips screwdriver, an...
Making a trailer tailgate out of salvaged steel
Просмотров 1052 года назад
My Dad built his own trailer back in the 70s with steel he traded a cow for. He has always used ramps but it is time to make things a little easier. In this video we use some salvaged steel to build a trailer tailgate. How hard could it be? Upper tailgate latch failure on 2013 BMW X5 e70 (Fixed *See updated video)
Просмотров 11 тыс.2 года назад
The upper tailgate on my 2013 X5 was closing but only latching halfway. I would constantly get notifications to close the trunk while driving. It was also opening halfway at times instead of fully opening. I couldn't find a RUclips video that helped me solve the problem, I finally figured it out and it was simply just two bolts (13mm socket ) and an adjustment on the lower portion of the latch....
Thanks bro ur a genius
I don’t know if originally there should be screws, mine is too without it . And same times comes error trunk is opened and then disappears. I will try that too . Thanks
What size is the screw at the 20 second mark and size washer?
The bolts in the slam plate are 13mm but I made a better updated video on how to fix this. That one explains it better. ruclips.net/video/zwfHQUssUcg/видео.htmlsi=j6rs5a8fTW9xFTzN
Or did you watch that and accidentally click on my old video? The updated video I linked has all the parts links. The washers inner diameter is 5mm and outer diameter is 13mm. The shaft of the screws is 3mm thick.
Can you close the gate with keyfob?
I never used the key fob to open and close because the alarm was very sensitive. I'm not sure if it will close with the keyfob or not and I've sold the X5 so I can't check unfortunately.
i am lucky to have found your video. i got a 2013 50i m sport yesterday with the same issue. thanks
I'm glad it was helpful.
I think they should send you to the engineering dept to tell them about our pain. Awesome job man.
Thanks, appreciate it.
Hi Danny, is this fix still working for you?
Yes this hasn't been a problem since I made this video.
cheers, I'm going to tighten the bolts first and if it comes back try this approach@@crashboxfly1
Another comment said they had success with just tightening the bolts and using a little threadlocker, that very well may do the trick. My method ensures aliment but there's no harm in trying to just tighten the bolts first. That's what I did originally but it eventually became misaligned again, which is why I figured out to use the holes further back.
Great video!! Question I’m 200+lbs how does it hold up, compared to the stock shock?
It helps but it's not magic. If you have a Grom it's worth doing. I was 240lbs in that video and it definitely made it better. I was using it for a commute. It's still rougher than a full size bike which is what I ride now.
I did a stretch kit and lowering kit 2 1/2 inch and it feels like im griding on my rear tire lol thats awesome ty for the reply i will be buying that rear shocks.@@crashboxfly1
That’s not making it longer, it’s increasing preload which will “raise” it by keeping it up higher in the stroke. The lower nut near the lower mounting bolt adjusts the shock length which raises or lowers ride height. Lowering the bike lengthens the wheelbase because the swingarm is elongated on its radius. Raising the bike shortens in.
My X5 is an E70 2013 also. I have been having this problem on and off for a few years. I align the latch and it works for a while. I will give this fix a try and let you know. Thanks for sharing this video and fix!
Taking your suggestion I was able to align the latch, and it now works …keeping my fingers crossed!
@HV71851 so did it work?
Yes, it did.
Unbeliavable! It worked for me as well! Couldnt manually open/close it from outside. Also my glove box stayed closed and i couldnt open it. Checked fuses - didnt work. But then found this vid. Many thanks!
Lots of semi accurate info here. However, the objective is to first align door mechanically, which isn't really our issue here... THEN loosen the 2 large button head torx screws a tiny amount, maybe half turn, to allow soft close motor to be adjusted. THEN loosen the 2 inboard small torx screws and very carefully slide latch toward you (rearward) a half millimeter and snug all screws again. Recheck function. The objective is to make sure the soft close pull tab DOES NOT touch the upper latch as you close the upper door. Any contact and it thinks a micro switch sensed a problem and powers soft close system to release... Often, this happens accidentally (often) and you just need a reset of the soft close module to act normal again. This ecu and fuse is NOT the same as tailgate module, or lift module. Easiest to just open trunk fully, disconnect batt for a few min and it'll cycle again(as long as latch isn't touching soft close latch, which will find you in a viscous loop)
I tried disconnecting the battery when this happened to me but it didn't help. I talk about a lot of the things I tried in an earlier video. It was only when I noticed the slam plate/ lower latch wasn't aligned that I managed to fix it. Thanks for your input though, the reason I made the video is because I had a terrible time trying to figure out what the problem was and I wanted to help others with the same problem. Any input or tips from other people are welcome.
Nope easy way to fix this problem take those big bolts out but only do one at a time apply locktite and be done did mine 4 yrs ago no rattle since also you can adjust the bump stops aswell to fix the rattle issue both methods work
I can see why that would work but you also might put it back misaligned. The reason I use clips is because it should put the eye in the correct alignment. I addressed the bump stops in an earlier video, they had nothing to do with my specific case though.
Mine not solved yet. I tried fuses ..and all. But it didn't work
Did you look to see if the bolts on the lower tailgate latch were loose?
@@crashboxfly1 .... must the bolts be tightened or loosen.? Which position or stage must the bolts be..?
The upper lock is also not re.acting when I press the remote.?
This morning I am gonna buy a new relay...cause the computerized testing is talking about short circuit....or so..?
@@amingohonneb3331 the bolts should be tight with the latch lined up correctly. If you want to see if that is the problem you can loosen the bolts, reposition the latch, and then see if the tailgate will latch. Just retighten the bolts with the latch in the correct position after.
Good tips thanks
Thanks it fixed my problems %100
How is it holding up?
Great so far. I ride to work five days a week usually and I carry extra clothes, rain gear, and meals everytime. I'm very pleased with it.
@@crashboxfly1 cool. Thanks. Been looking into getting it.
It's served me very well.
Hey Danny, you’re the only one that I’ve seen with the same exact issue as my car, it’s crazy. I tried doing exactly what you said, but I’m still having the same issue. It happens about 95% of the time, and it rarely closes fully. Did this permanently fix your problem ? Thank you for posting this video btw
Yes this seems to have fixed it permanently for me. Granted it's only been a few weeks, but so far so good. In my first video about this I didn't see those holes in the back that's why I made this one. In my first video I went over some other things people would claim caused the issue just to be more comprehensive.
Maybe try to realigne it without using those two holes in the back. See if you can get it to close by trying different positions. Maybe try to realigne it and close it while leaving the bolts loose. That may give you an idea on if it really is an alignment issue or something else. Let me know if that helps, I tried a bunch of other fixs before I figured out this was my problem. I'm happy to try and help.
The problem is the one original screw on the right doesn’t work well, the threads are done. So I’m guessing it keeps getting thrown if alignment since I’m working only with one screw. I had no choice but try to make it work like you. I might have to replace the piece
Thanks for your help
If you go to your local hardware store they should be able to match that screw for you so you can just get a new one. If you think the hole itself has damaged threads they will probably have a tap and die set or the correct tap size individually and you can use that to repair the threads. I don't know what your experience is with such things but a tap and die is pretty easy to use, there has to be a lot of RUclips videos on how to use one. That would definitely be a lot cheaper than buying a new latch mechanism.
What’s the link to the little plastic clips and that shock.

That's the clips that I used. It's just a general kit I keep around because I work on other vehicles too. Most assorted packs of clips will probably have a size that fits. The clips I used from this kit were a little snug but they did work. You might do better to search for "body panel clips for 2022 Honda Grom" or something like that. If you don't want to bother with that, the kit I linked does have some that will work. Hope this helps.

150$! WOW you're a member of more money than brains. You could do that for 50$ including fuel for driving around picking up the needed stuff. I had my H2C breaking on me, with steel bars I had already, i expanded it and made it stronger, drill holes for the plate and cost me next to nothing. Although the rack itself cost me 40€ (including international shipping) 4 years ago. You may want to explore the idea of side cases too. I have those on mine and it's brilliant.
I like having one big bag to throw everything in. It's one less step to throw everything in the bag vs having two containers when trying to get to work. That being said, what containers do you use? I don't know about getting this done for $50, materials are more expensive these days. I definitely could have welded something together for cheaper but all that takes time and it wouldn't have been the same. If you have a video of you fixing the H2C I'd watch it.
@@crashboxfly1 I have the SH23 from Shad. Shad doesn't have side racks for the MSX, and they provide no assistance whatsoever. I did all the work on my own. Took some time, but I enjoyed it. I only use the cases when travelling. Day to day, i use either a pouch, or a top case. No, i don't have a video. But there are a few on RUclips. It's not as simple as on the new model, i can tell you that, but it takes 30 minutes...
@@zefautino Not providing help or information whatsoever is becoming too common these days with a lot of these companies. Yeah I enjoy tinkering and doing little custom stuff here and there. Time is a big factor for me. I'm working 60 hours a week these days. It's hard finding time to get stuff done. I like being busy though, I can't stand to sit around and do nothing.
@@crashboxfly1 Not only companies, i requested help from people around me, no one could be bothered to provide any ideas. But that's on me, not them. I started building a side car for it, but I'm dropping the idea due to legal reasons. I don't need any headache in my life. Anyway, i tried soft luggage, and I didn't like it. It's not secure enough for me to trust it. I need to be sure it's not going anywhere. Seen too many people laying down and never get up again because of a bungee cord or strap... Also, totally waterproof, and I can just leave the bike knowing I have some degree of safety regarding theft. The downside is extra weight. Nothing is perfect. If you decide to try side bags, i may give some ideas.
@@zefautino Thanks I appreciate that.
This is absolutely impeccable workmanship. Great job to all those who were involved!
Some mistakes were made lol.
Do you know What the two extra holes in-between the mounting hole for?
I think they are so you can mount grab handles on top of the rack. Web!ke doesn't say on their website anything about them. Another use is a tie down point for a bag on the rack. This is in fact how I mounted my bag to the rack. There are five tie down points on my bag and I used those holes for two of them. Hope that helps.
It's a Honda, "weight reduction bro...". 🤣
