    How friendly are FastCAT events for dogs that are still working on their recall? I've seen some videos where it seems like the runs are relatively open and I don't feel confident enough in my girl's recall around other dogs to let her off leash if there's a chance she can escape

    • @nddogsportsevents
      @nddogsportsevents 8 месяцев назад

      I would highly encourage you to find one that's fenced. Some are rather open and I can see that concern as my own dogs wouldn't do well in that type of environment. I also use a harness going to the line and a slip lead afterwards so I could make sure they didn't get loose. Getting off leash depends on each club, some will NQ a run, some will expel the dog. I would go to a couple to watch and see how you feel about it! It's a great entry sport and a lot of clubs are good at remembering there's a lot of first time dog sports peeps at these events so they are usually really nice!

      Thanks for commenting! Sorry for the delayed response! When they were under a year we enjoyed the regular BarkBoxes. Dolly however has a tendency to try and ingest the stuffing and plastics that was in the toys so we went to SuperChewer to make them last longer. She still like to destroy them, but there's less stress for me as I know she's not accidently ingesting anything. Merle enjoys anything ball shaped in the boxes, he never really destroyed the toys, but did help unstuff them once they were opened up by Dolly. He liked playing tug with the stuffies more than ripping them apart. We are now fully on SuperChewer and won't be going back down to the normal boxes. Hope this helps!

    Hi! I saw you during VRAs’ live feed with Tony today and wanted to stop by and show my support as a fellow RUclipsr who loves the advice and tips, they provide us to succeed. What are your thoughts on the best way to get our pugs to stop barking at squirrels who invade their territory? Be confident and know that you are not alone in our journey to reach success. I hope to see more of you online soon!

    • @nddogsportsevents
      @nddogsportsevents 3 года назад

      Hey! Thanks for reaching out! Barking is always a bit difficult as it's a self-rewarding behavior. If you're able to catch the pugs early in a barking session, I would redirect them. Main thing to remember, dogs can only have one thought at a time, so if they are engaged with barking, they can't hear a thing you're saying. What you'll want to do is find something that you'd rather them do and get them to turn their faces towards you. Once they are looking at you you have that one thought, you usually only have it for a few milliseconds before the squirrel is more interesting again. In this moment is when you redirect. Get their favorite toy and toss it away/inside from the distraction, then interact with them like that's the biggest thing they've ever done, praise affection, play, all of it. After a few times of that, you'll want to add a word to it, Leave-It is my go-to cause it's super universal, that command literally means knock it off and look at me. Once there's enough positive experiences (hence the play, you're making yourself more interesting than the squirrel) then they may start to bark then look at you, once you get to that point super hype the self-restraint and after a few months, they should be starting to chill out. Once they are getting to where they are looking and not barking you can reward that action as well, it can sometimes speed up the process. The longer the habit has been in place, the longer it will take to break it. A big thing to note is if you let it slip through even once, you are getting set back weeks, I know it's inconvenient, but you have to stay hype consistent when redirecting behaviors like that that we don't like, but is totally natural to the dogs.

      I'm so glad you feel confident in training both. I super want to stress, you'll see in upcoming videos, I work with both individually as well. Mostly in public as I want them both to listen while inside the house and distracting each other, but with them being siblings, I don't want the negative sides of littermate syndrome to show up. I make sure they both get out of the house 1x1 time at least twice a week be it a Lowe's Michaels, Homegoods, places like that or just going downtown and they have to ignore people and focus on training! Teaching two is 100% possible and they are great distractions for the themselves :D
