BOGOTA Market Of The Fleas
In this episode we visit the Mercado de Los Pulgas on Carrera Septima in Bogota, Colombia. It is a super fun flea market with a great atmosphere. You can find super good deals on anything from shoes to jewelry. If you will be traveling to Bogota on a Sunday, I highly recommend you spend an afternoon checking out all the festivities. Don't forget to get some street food while you're there.

    City of DEATH - That's a bit over dramatic. That title seems more appropriate for Berlin. And to be specific about the War of the Brit Dude's Ear - It should be said that it was a DEVASTATING DEFEAT of the British Navy. Queen Elizabeth lost 9,500-11,500 fatalities, in great part to disease. And Cartagena only lost less than 1000 men. It was such a crushing defeat that Britain withdrew from the area and took a more diplomatic approach and was forced to recognize Cartagena as a free territory. You can't just brush over that.... Why? Because it was the very first Free Black Territory in the New World. And remained as such for nearly 500 years.

    On my visits, I just use credit card (in Colombian pesos where I have the option) at most places to pay for things, and use ATMs to get some cash for tips and smaller purchases. I never accept the conversion at an ATM, but only use an ATM in a busier area to increase security. As mentioned in the video, I usually only get about 100,000 to 200,000 pesos at a time. It does last for several days at least.

    • @imaginetravel7906
      @imaginetravel7906 2 года назад

      All true! Thanks for the comments. They will be very helpful to people visiting for the first time. The ATM conversion rates are terrible. If you trust your bank to give you a better conversion rate, always decline the one from the ATM. Never count on credit cards to work, so always have a little back up cash for your purchases. But try not to carry more than necessary. Right now $1 USD goes a looong way. So HAVE FUN!! And don’t forget to be smart and bring your manners. The people here are wonderful!

    • @gruncletim
      @gruncletim 2 года назад

      @@imaginetravel7906 Bringing manners is very good advice. I've seen too many other Americans show up in a foreign country and act very arrogant and demanding. how much expense for one month

    • @imaginetravel7906
      @imaginetravel7906 2 года назад

      Colombia has a very low cost of living for expats. Every city is different but the costs are significantly cheaper than most countries. Local food in a restaurant is the cheapest, around $5-7 USD, for a full meal and a drink. Beer is usually less than $1 USD. Rents for apartments vary a lot but a good median number is about $350-400 USD per month for a slightly more upscale living arrangement than the typical Colombian citizen. However, some things such as clothing and electronics are more expensive than normal.

    The most significant FINANCIAL factor in obtaining the M-11 visa (retired) is a vaguely/unstipulated by Migracon on the website, of health insurance requirements. This insurance MONTHLY premium can easily range from $400(US) per month to $2,000(US) per month...depending face value/coverage of the policy. As an experienced hand with Colombian visas, can you shed some light on "policy coverage" requirements in obtaining a visa?

    • @imaginetravel7906
      @imaginetravel7906 2 года назад

      Hello R Henderson. I know there are expat insurance policies that are available. However, I have an. “M” migrant visa and I have Colombian government medical coverage. I have used it several times and it usually costs me less than $1 USD per office visit. I was not required to prove medical coverage when I applied for my visa. But, because I am a “migrant” I have legal rights and medical coverage provided by the government. I hope this gives you another avenue to look down when researching your situation. Maybe you will be qualified for the government healthcare if you become a “migrant” citizen.

    Hola, thanks for your wonderful content. I am currently living in Bogota, and will stay until 2023. Can you give me a suggestion where I can exchange my money to a better rate? Because sometimes the exchange is low even if the original exchange rate is 1USD=4000COP. Gracias!

      Hello Abigayle Chesca Bolado! Bogota is a wonderful city! There are a lot of independent money exchanging business in Bogotá. If you have the time to explore and ask around at different locations you can find the best company. I personally use the ATM at Davivienda Bank, when it asks you if you “accept” the conversion rate, I always push “decline”. This gives me a much better conversion rate because my bank in the U.S. gives me better rates. Also, if you or a friend has a Colombian bank account it may be possible to utilize “Effecty”, “Western Union”, or some of the smaller international money transfer companies. If you are staying on a resident visa and have a Cedula Extranjero you should be able to open a bank account in Colombia. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. I am always happy to help a fellow traveler! Cheers!
