Together we explore and crisscross Southern California (and Beyond!) in search of unique and interesting trains. To learn about the past history and lore of fallen flags railroads. And to share the magic and allure of these towering mechanical beasts!
Union Pacific Anaheim Marlboro Local Switching Street-run #unionpacificrailroad #railfans #railway
It was an early morning in September as we followed and gave chase to the Union Pacific GP40-P 1375 "Marlboro Local" as it switched and worked various industries in Anaheim California. Including many views of it street running. Experience the sights and sounds of a rare EMD 645 prime mover working hard and shoving cars around.

Good Work.
I miss living in Anaheim n I use to follow the ringling bros circus back to the icehouse when I was a kid
I thought the trains from that area were remote controlled. I know I’ve seen signage in the past about unmanned cars.
The train interrupted the crackheads at 8:45😂😂
Yup! Got a little dicey for a moment. They weren't too keen us taping there.
Nice shots, excellent video ! Is this location near Santa Fe Springs? Happy 2025 !!! - Larry
Yes, literally a few blocks East of it. Thanks!!!
@@MrNotch9 thanks for the quick response!
I miss the wig wag we had . Dam UP
Yes - I grabbed a still of it many years ago, wish I took a video back then as well!
Im really familiar with the area, I worked out of the UPS hub between Ball and Cerritos, just off State College blvd. For a few years I worked in the yard moving trailers, and the spur to Ghanal lumber ran right behind our yard. Im surprised that none of those lumber loads went there. They also used to park the Ringling Circus train right behind our yard on that spur.
After a closer look at the video - the train has its full Center-Beams backing into Altium, so I think they did spot them in Ganahl Lumber after all. That is my guess.
Dose this train ever go further east along the tracks closer to 57 freeway????? When I stayed at the Salvation army shelter durning the pandemic thought I saw it go east for hour then come back cross over BNSF/Metrolinck tracks....enjoyed this video Happy this is still running😊❤
This is my first time down there investigating and following the trains. Looking at Google maps the line definitely extends beyond the 57 - I just can't tell it gets rail service down there. Might be worth more trips down there! Thanks for checking out the videos!
One area by Cerritos Ave backs into Lumber company next to the Salvation Army Homeless shelter along side Lewis st
I think that is exactly right - next to the Salvation Army Shelter.
Awesome video!. Where did they drop off the center beam lumber cars?
Good eye! This one puzzled us as well - somehow inbetween chasing it from International Paper and Altium Packing - it switched out the centerbeams. It had the cars backing into Altium, so we believe it probably switched them at Ganahl Lumber immediately north of it. (Also it is possible the tank car went to Diversified CPC International directly East.) Seems like they packed a lot of switching into a little space! Thanks for watching the videos!!!
filthy locomotive.
nice vid... but man i cringe when i see guys riding the loco steps through crossings... all it takes is one crazy bastard not paying attention and wham... now a poor switchman is crushed in the stairwell... going through all those suspect crossings, those guys are better off in the cab
It is crazy dangerous - I posted a new video of a UP local shoving train backwards. Switchman hanging on the side of the car as it crosses the intersection. Luckily, there is more visibility to be seen. No blind corners. Thanks for checking out the videos!
I remember when they always had 50 or more cars and 3 locomotives to pull all of cars down the line. Those were the days.
That would very impressive to see!
I have not followed this local for 15 years since this guy Chris walker used to chase them and repost on the internet.
Interesting train - just came upon it recently. Certainly worth looking more into. Thanks!
Born and raised in Anaheim. Used to sit on the curb across from the of Fremont fields and place pennies on the tracks for the sugar beet trains to crush in the late 50s, Thanks for the memories,
Thanks for watching the video - would have liked to see that in person!
Great vid. Love the street running in Anaheim. What is actually left in the City of Orange that UP services?
Sorry, I am not sure. Perhaps others here will have a better idea.
@@MrNotch9 Thank you. No worries.
Has this always been a UP line or was a SP like the sub that goes through Whittier to La Habra.
Yep! Ex. SP line
I think part these routes. of these are possibly of the Pacific Electric (And SP)
Actually majority sp and then PE
Great video. Just wonderful how you captured and explained the whole trip! Keep up the great work and happy new Year!
Glad you are enjoying them. Hope to put out more soon!
I grew up in the neighborhood just to the north. In the 60s we'd play in the creek (back then it wasn't all concreted in and the trestle over the creek was wood). In the summer, we'd sleep with the bedroom windows open, and I remember listening not only to the main line trains going by, but the sound of the local switching the industries. Spool up, and then spool down. Spool up, and then spool down. Sometimes I miss the sounds of my youth. Good video. Where States Logistics is used to be a huge Nabisco plant. We loved it when the wind blew from that direction.
That is an amazing memory - sounds like a boys dream! So you could smell the cooking (or cookies?) from Nabisco? Thanks for checking out the video. Might have to get back down there again!
@@MrNotch9 I graduated from Neff High School. It was on the south side of Alondra between the ATSF tracks (before the merger) and Trojan Way. (They changed the name of the street to our mascot, the Trojans.) This was before they sank the tracks below Alondra. Our marching band practice field was next to the tracks, and it seems like the train engineer really enjoyed blowing his horn at us when he went by. The trombone section figured out the horn tones and would answer him back. A coupla times a year the local switch crew would have the street blocked in the morning, and half the school would be late for first period! Also, you could pick up a classroom phone and hear the KFI broadcast. This was handy when wanting to check how the Dodgers were doing during a daylight game. I have lots of memories of the train while growing up there. It was a large part of your life if you grew up in that part of La Mirada.
Cool!
Thanks! Appreciate you checking out the videos.
I lived in Anaheim during the 80's and I remember the Ringling Bro's Circus parked on that first stretch of track so that it could parade from there on streets to it's destination. Nice memories, thanks for sharing!
That would have been great to have seen!
Was this taken on a Friday?
According to my video log - it was on a Thursday, Sept 26th. (My video details info might be off)
Itchy! Nice
Can't beat the Simpsons!!! Thanks!
Your narration really adds to the quality of your videos. Blessings!
Thanks - appreciate it. Good to hear.
Great video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
7600 horsepower for 2 boxcars? Or are the units derated
As far as I can tell, and research, the EMD GP60M-3 (And GP60M) are identical at 3800 horsepower. In either case, it shouldn't take much to pull a few boxcars over a relatively flat ground. The units are positioned back to back, facing opposite to each. Possibly having this makes it easier to switch - you can work in both directions. (Comfort cab might be difficult or awkward to switch/run backwards.) But this is a guess on my part. Thanks for checking out the video.
Nice job 👏
Thanks! Appreciate you checking out the videos.
Awesome!!!
Thanks, appreciate you checking out the videos!
Crazy cool!!
Thanks - glad you like these!!!!
Trains are super cool!!
Thanks - careful they get addictive!!!!
Great!!
Super cool. Love this!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome!!
Thanks!
Burbank👍👍
Nice!!
Yus!!!
Crazy🤯🤯
Fire 🔥
Nice! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
The bad track is the least of the concerns. At grade crossings, the train ALWAYS has the right of way and the train crew should NEVER have to stop to let cars pass, especially at a signalized crossing!
I agree people need to pay more attention and respect to trains in general.
There weren't any signalized crossings in the video, were there? And, at unsignaled crossings, isn't the train required to verify that the crossing is clear before proceeding?
There were a few signalized crossings, you just need to look closely.
Great action 👍😎
Thanks! Appreciate you checking out the videos.
I live in Whittier 👋👍
So you seem pretty close to the Action down there.
Here in Burbank.
How did you k ow that there was gonna be foreign power running through the LOF74?
I get various information and tips from Facebook channels, plus other Railfans tip me off.
@sirbustor Thank you good sir
Another awesome video! Congrats on 400 subs!!
Thanks - appreciate you checking out the videos.
The Union Pacific heritage unit is quite spectacular! Great vid!!
Fantastic video quality, and informative narration. Also appreciated the map, and including that red shuttle in the opening and closing scenes. Question: Is that red shuttle used for crew changes? I've never seen one before. I plan on building a small HO scale layout of a few industries in the Greater Los Angeles area, so your videos are very helpful. * subscribed *
Glad you find the videos helpful - I too and a HO Modeler, and the railfan trips are a big part of that. Looking for interesting and new location ideas. I am pretty sure the red Shuttlewagons are there to switch and move cars. Much like the EMD SW-switchers did in the past. Probably just more economical to run. Thanks for watching. I will eventually post some Model Railroader videos as well!
@@MrNotch9 Looking forward to seeing your HO layout videos.
That’s nice, during mid October 2024, UP ran KLOF41 with CP Leader 8205 and BNSF 6746
Thanks, appreciate you checking out the videos.
Why doesn’t bnsf replace the un even track and add better crossing gates at Alondra
I am guessing like everywhere, it is not a big priority for them. Quite possibly it also might be the city's responsibility to maintain - and we see how well that goes. Perhaps someone else in the comments will have a better answer. Thanks for checking out my videos.
I wonder if you could get any info on the Kimberly Clark job out of La Mirada that heads to Fullerton. Although the paper mill is shut down there aren't many customers left on this branch line. There used to be a guy named Chris that used to document it all but his website is taken down.
I can try to look into that. Will see what I can find - thanks for the idea.
Ive seen an entie bnsf train in glendale only bnsf
Where did you see that? Nice!
Glendale ca
I worked for the BNSF up until 2002. I worked this local switch job a few times. The guys filming would have passed out if they saw the way we switched out Malabar yard. Kicking a cut of 3 cars uphill hard enough to clear the engine into another track, letting them roll back down the same lead and catching them with the engine on the other side. Old school way to make a turn with only one man on the ground.
That would have been quite to sight to behold - heard crazy stories of some of the switching down back in the days. I imagine you can't get away with it now. When you were switching - did any of the cars get away from you or foul something?
