I've been going to Japan in June /July and it's the best time as there are not a lot of tourists around. And even if it's raining there I still have a great time visiting different cities and towns. All you need a umbrella from 7-11 or Don Quixote and your set. Even if there was a typhoon I'll still enjoy myself because it's Japan. 😊 Your doing great .

I think that Hokkaido is a bit run down compared to Honshu in my opinion. It might be due to the harsher conditions in winter or it's just a bit poorer up there.

Thank you. As I follow your RUclips videos on Japan, I have identified a couple of places within the US, where I would lead a quiet life with nature for a total of four months as well as explore hot springs within a two hour drive from my house in Virginia. In the US, health services for me are essentially covered and language is not an issue. There are also trips to NY City and upstate to visit kids and grandkids and they coming where the kids grew up in i.e. Virginia and Washington DC (with all the free museums). Not bad for a person who started some 44 years ago in the US with nothing. Japan may have to wait till JTB can organize train/plane based trips like they used to before COVID. It's a way of acknowledging that I'm 70 years old with health challenges after all. Wish you all the best.

ANA property was also my choice because it is where the Hot Spring hotels pick you up from i.e. those who are non-residents and don't want to take the risk of hefty fines (USD 1000 type) from mistakes in driving. So rental car or pick up services both use this old refurbished centrally located facility. By the way, my May 2024 trip had to be cancelled as my primary care doctor found the risk (of heart failure) to be too high. With weight loss I may be able to take the trip next year.

Hi Jake, very good video. I’m wondering is it the same for transfer from Haneda airport. The trip is like this, I will use the Suica from Haneda airport to Tokyo. At the transfer gate, I will buy the Shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Utsunomiya. As I have yet to tap out my Suica card, I’m thinking it could be just like what you have shown. Meaning after I buy the Shinkansen ticket at the transfer gate, when I enter, I insert the paper ticket, then tap the Suica card to end my local train trip. Hope you can share some light in this scenario.

    • @liljapan

For local trains beyond the destination station where you disembark from the Shinkansen, special rules may apply in major metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Osaka, and they may be included in the Shinkansen ticket.

If this is the case, I only need to insert my shinkansen ticket and then use my IC card to get on Keikyu line to Kuramae station. Am I correct? How do I know if I need to insert shinkansen ticket and IC card at the same time when I pass through the gate?

    • @liljapan

You are correct. Shinkansen and JR local line are both JR railways, it needs both touching. But Keikyu line is not JR lines, once you get off from JR lines, and then touch the IC card for boarding the Keikyu line.
