Should we stop Bass Fishing During the Spawn? (with underwater footage)

BIG Spawning Smallmouth Bass have a BIG problem (Underwater Footage)

Underwater footage of a pair of smallmouth bass actively trying to lay and fertilize eggs while they are being raided by round gobies. Cool to see the process but sad to see the devastation the Gobies are causing on the nest. This nest has no chance as the eggs dont even get a chance to get to the bottom.

    Tournaments are a big factor, catching spawning bass then bringing them away from their spawns in my opinion it would make sense not fishing during spawn to give us more bass but that’s not the case

  • @rjmyerscough

    So i learned even if you dont fish bedding bass they will still have a chance of never coming back…? So again why are we so restricted yet theres plenty of non restrictive lakes and ponds that hold trophies bigger then some people can dream.

    Thanks for this video and amazing footage. I have been fishing Lake Simcoe for thebpast couple of years and noticed a ton of gobies during the summer when fishing for smallies. Spring there are a ton of Perch to catch so I know there are multiple species eating the gobies. Around Georgina Island is where I noticed a ton of gobies last year and my son even caught one. Hopefully other area's of the lake the gobies are under control from smallies and other fish eating them.

    There is nothing good that comes from Bed fishing other than self gratification. It’s killing the fishery and although this is only one video and one pair of fish it is happening every where.

    FFS takes the challenge and mystery out of fishing. It's turned BASS and other fishing tournaments into watching (or not watching) boring fish catching exhibitions! Really, if that's what I was interested in watching, I'd go to Dave & Busters and watch people play video games. It has the potential to greatly harm fisheries. In golf they don't let tournament golfers use a yardage device. Why?...to protect the integrity of the game. In hunting some will think they're hunting on a high fence property. The fact is, no matter the acreage, it's still a cage and not hunting...just shooting and cheating yourself of the challenge of the hunt at that. In fishing FFS takes away the challenge of finding fish and a successful pattern...it clearly takes a day on the water from fishing to just plain catching.

  • @JMFishing

    Damn, that’s a worrying amount of Gobies. I always wondered how the smallmouth populations would be affected by Gobies. Sure, the overall average size is increasing but are there less fish numbers now due to less recruitment?

  • @RedsFishin
    @RedsFishin 2 месяца назад

    Nice footage! The fisheries seem to be doing fine, so there must be some areas where predation is much less. I bed fish sometimes when the season first opens, but find it boring and doesn't take much skill. Fun to get a newbie their first 5+lbr. I'd rather catch them post spawn, imo

    • @happygofishingtv

    Honestly, I've always been of the opinion that taking your limit home to eat once in a while is more conservation than fishing them on their beds, even if you catch and release. These fish need their energy to fight the egg stealers. Last thing they need is to waste that energy fighting with us during that time. I'm surprised bed fishers don't get shunned nearly as much as some of us who take some home to eat once in a while.....just don't bother them at all until season opens!

    Thats hard to watch, I remember when gobies didn't exist in our lakes and now its invested because of freighters for overseas emptying their ballasts. This is just as bad as Canadas immigration policies.

    It's common knowledge the size and populations of smallmouth have exploded due to the gobies as a food source so it's a little give and take. The smallmouth will find a way and not all fish are the smartest at nesting, much like ducks. Some are smarter, and more aggressive than others.

    • @timeonthewaterca
      @timeonthewaterca 2 месяца назад

      Population growth peaked about 10 years ago on many lakes with goby. The extended growing season allowed fry to survive the winter. Goby helped with average size. But the benefits of Goby as food might be tilting negative.

  • @chesschess100
    @chesschess100 2 месяца назад

    I love bass fishing and am not a fan of bed fishing myself. It’s hard enough for those eggs/fry to survive when they have an adult looking after them. Taking a fish off a bed can only be hurting the chances of any of them surviving.
