The usual mix of jobs going through the shop at the moment, some parts on the CNC Lathe to run that you might have seen in a previous video. And to break up the mundane thing of running jobs on the CNC Lathe a fair few parts to run on the Manual Mill. Next video is a Q&A on the Vevor Welding Positioner.

Happy to have plenty of work to keep me busy. Coming up on the next video ?? Q & A video on the Vevor Welding Positioner to answer a few of the questions that have come up on previous videos. And after that onto a planned series of videos with my Blasting Cabinet which should be interesting IF into Blast Cabinets. Testing a few different mediums to find out which ones suit different types of me...
Do I really need a Welding Positioner ???

As much it's great owning a Welding Positioner. You can still Weld certain parts with a basic set-up, especially if you're trying to get started and you can't justify buying a Welding Positioner 👍
Long Metric Thread on a Manual Lathe. ( How To ?? )
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.7 месяцев назад
How To ?? Cut most Threads on a Manual Lathe. Back with a similar part as the previous video. But, this time using 1020 grade Mild Steel. A little more forgiving of a material for Cutting Threads, unfortunately not as nice a material to work with such as Stainless Steel or Medium to High Tensile Steels. IF you have any questions, let me know in the comments 👍

Some basics on cutting Threads on a Manual Lathe. It's not so much a How To Video ?? more so how you get started cutting Threads on most types of materials, including 316 Stainless Steel.

Some interesting work you have going through the shop, it is good to see you keeping busy. Have a merry christmas and safe new year.
Hey Chris. Always good to see you. One thing I can't complain about in my shop, is the mix of work that comes in. Only yesterday I had a previous customer bring in a small job to help him out with. He has pretty much completed a restoration of a Honda CB1100 and wants me to help out with fitting a custom front guard. It would be good to show the bike in a video, possibly I can post a Short to show his progress. Apparently he has already committed around 40k to this project. Thanks for watching and fingers crossed 🎅brings something good for Christmas 👍
I hope you have a Merry Christmas!
Hi Tom. One last video to finish off 2024. Thanks for watching and a Merry Christmas to you. I hope🎅brings you something you wished for. All the best and see you again in 2025 👍
Hope the prop shaft customer didn't say something like "Just" move the keyway)) Happy holidays! 🎉
Sounds like your speaking from a previous customer experience 😅 The Boat Man as I call him, is pretty good to deal with always brings me some sort mission to work on and has a fairly good understanding of the work involved and doesn't mind paying for what he wants done. All the best and I hope 🎅brings you something good for Christmas👍
@@weldmachine Yeah, I often hear something like this from customers)) Hope 🎅will get me a new ⚙3D printer this Christmas. Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you and your family! 🎉

Do you think it's necessary to get the paint of the back side where the ground contacts
I'm not sure if it's necessary to do it ?? But I did remove the coating from around the area where the copper earth makes contact with the table. I was a little concerned I might get some arcing if I didn't do it. I guess the best way to know is try it first 👍
@weldmachine hey thanks for the feedback back sir
Was this the original paint on the machine?
The original colour is the Green colour you can see at the bottom of the machine. Always hated this😅 IF you're curious to know more ?? I do have a whole series of videos devoted to the rebuild and you can find the Green colour the machine was originally painted back earlier in my channel 👍
I've spent the majority of the past 4 yeàrs repairing cnc machines and can now fully appreciate how nice and clean that is lol. Nothing like climbing into a rotten, neglected, clapped out Haas or something to drive you to drinking 🤣. The old girl looks real good! Cheers!
Always good to hear/read from you. Yes, OLD CNC Machines are definitely a bit of a pain to work on especially in most cases where the owners don't spend any time or money maintaining them, it's only when they come to complete stop the need to do something finally happens ??? I hope all is going well with you. And helps to remind me to catch up on so of what I have missed with you 👍
Thanks for showing us around this pal, I was going to buy one but shipping to UK was higher than the price of the positioner, Just ordered parts to build one👍
@@DazFab It was probably a good video to watch to help get some ideas of how to build one for yourself. All the best with the build 👍
Happy working, from Bekasi Indonesia

@hilltopmachineworks2131 Hey Tom. I still enjoy posting an occasional video. And a few jobs as well to keep me busy 😊👍
Great video, glad to see your keeping busy. We all become masters of juggling job to keep customers happy. Catch you on the next one
@chriswoods2263 Hey.Thanks, Chris 👍
Love that Puma lathe Peter. It was great seeing it close up. 👍🍻
@DCT_Aaron_Engineering Hey Aaron. It's definitely nice to have, too.👍
Looking good Peter 👏

U-drills are pretty awesome. I run them all the time on the CNC lathes. Powerful internal coolant is a must as well as automatic feed. So on a manual lathe, mount the tool on the support and not the tailstock. Also take care to align or better, have a setup that does not need alignment. You need the most stable setup possible, ideally eliminate the compound slide. Another great feature of U-drills is that they can be run a bit off-center which often gets me directly to finish cutting with a boring bar. Yes we have a lot of different sizes in the shop. The ER collets are available with internal sealing but I think it is better to use the Weldon system as intended. Also this allows for for proper indexing when drilling off-center. It takes a bit of creative solutions to get the coolant through. The flat on the shaft of drills and boring bars is a leak path to be eliminated.
I agree with your thoughts of mounting the U-Drill in the Toolpost would be a much better idea and feeding in with the Leadscrew to keep the Feed Rate even. I decided to show the U-Drill mounted in the Tailstock for a few reasons ?? Most Manual Lathes have a reasonably good Tailstock, but possibly not the capabilities to hold a U-Drill in the Toolpost. It also makes the video easier to follow if I don't need to show how to align the U-Drill to the centre of the part. I was trying to include as much information as possible but without adding too much for those who might be watching. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts 😊👍
Thanks for the update, it is always interesting to see what you are up to keep busy.
The Doosan is future proof :) no such as overkill.
Thanks for the update. 👍

@@sadatsanat2045 Thank you for watching 👍
Do you think you could just drill the stock shaft out for back purging? If you kept the positioner vertical you could get away without the back bolt.
@Icandothatalsow You can drill through the standard Shaft that supports the table for a Purge setup. And possibly get away without the M8 Retaining Bolt on the end of the Shaft ?? I can't recall the exact setup of how it was held together on the standard positioner ?? ( before I modified it with the through bore you saw in the video ) But I'm sure the Roller Bearings that supports the Shaft will still hold it in place, even without the Retaining Bolt 👍
I've wanted one for a while. We have a vevor UK site, but they don't sell anything electrical to us. Not sure why but It sucks, I'm toying with building my own as a result.
@DazFab_Metalworks Maybe have a look on ebay. They are still available and seem to have come down in price ?? I'm not sure IF any sellers are available to you in the UK 🤔 IF you're interested in building a Positioner yourself, maybe have a look at my second video where the Positioner is partly disassembled. It might help you with some ideas on how to build one yourself 👍
@@weldmachine Thanks pal, Right now I'm undecided on whether to use belt, chain or worm gear, I will take a look at your other vid. Thanks again👍
Great video, I have the Proarc PT-103 with a Digital controller dedicated for smaller tig jobs on pipe & tube for car and 4x4 parts & fire hydrant spools and a Proarc PT-1000 setup with a tag mega roller stand for doing large pipe spools and fittings
@chriswoods2263 Hey Chris. I like the Proarc Positioners. We had a few larger versions in a shop I worked in. I did buy one myself, but I can't recall the model number ?? ( it was a few years ago ) I can only remember it had a 450mm table. It sat around unused after buying it for a sub contract job. A good mate borrowed it. And it seemed like he owned after keeping it for such a long time ?? In the end, I told him the free hire period has finished, and it was time to buy it. What a surprise when he said he wasn't using it, and I could have it back ?? A couple of weeks go by, and he's back again wanting to borrow it ?? This time you need to buy it. NO more free hire 😅 Ironically, he made $$$$ from using it. Did I see even $ 20 for borrowing it 🙄 Good Mates ??? Thanks as always, for watching 😊 👍
Excellent, Peter. Have you tried side turning with the grooving tool?. Where did you source the pie jaws from?. Thanks.
@sachie123 With the 4mm Insert, I don't get that good of a finish and would prefer to save the leading edges for Roughing out. I had the Pie Jaws for a few years now. I can't recall where I purchased them ?? Never really had a use for them until running these parts. Just finished running the last part only 10 minutes ago 👍
Lol , 200 holes would be really interesting after drilling about 2000 when i built my workshop ! Cheers Peter 👍
200 holes to drill on a Manual machine is enough for me in one day 👍
An interesting video. It is good to see you keeping busy
@chriswoods2263 Hey Chis. Yes, always something to keep me busy 👍
hey mate - i hope everything is good
Yes, everything is going good 👍 Reminds me I need to come over and see how many new machines you must have by now. I'm sure you must be up to at least 10 by now 😉

Good one Peter🫡🫡 What was the othe ID tool that was in the backround?.
I'm not 100 % sure which part of the video you saw the Tool in the background 🤔 I'm guessing the Tool on the bench later in the video ?? It's a custom made tool from Sandvik for a job I run occasionally. Not exactly a cheap tool to purchase. But, it's one of those jobs where you need exactly the right tool or it won't happen 👍
Good one Peter . Cheers 👍
Thanks, Max. Good to see you again 👍
Great video, Some interesting jobs going there. The larger ring you're machining up I have an idea what they are when you said they are cut and had welding to be done
Thanks for taking the time to watch Chris 👍 and🤫😉
👍👍
Thanks Tom 😉
Is there a threw hole for purging?
NO through hole ?? I needed to do a fair few modifications on the version I purchased just to have a through hole. There is a video on my channel if you're interested 🤔 I plan to post another video soon. Answering questions that have come up on past videos might be worth watching if you're looking to buy the same Welding Positioner 👍
For longer runs with chamfers make a double tool like this one on my channel - Unique double tool for accelerated production of chamfered spacers.
Make the part from threaded rod. Save your client a fortune.
The part could possibly be made with All Thread. But the customer wanted a Shaft size of 25.00 mm with a M22 Thread. I always offer a customer alternatives for what they might need. But this is what the customer wanted. I did offer to machine a 25.00 mm Shaft with a Thread that could except the M22 Thread into it. But, the part that was required needed to 1 piece 👍
Great video, any tradesman who has been around for a while knows there will always be more than one way to get thing done. They just have to decide what is best for a given situation.
Hey Chris. It's always good to have an alternative plan for doing any job. Just in case things don't go way you first thought they would. And of course we can't always buy the right tool every job. Thanks for watching 👍
Good to see you busy mate 👍👏
Thanks Aaron 👍
Just found your channel and subscribed. Very nice work
If you're interested, I have a few videos on my channel with a Manual Lathe, especially to do with Threading. Also, there are a lot of videos about rebuilding a Mazak CNC Lathe. I'm not sure if this is something you might like to watch ?? I try to mix the videos up a little to keep it interesting. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Look forward to seeing you in the comments 👍
Another interesting video
Hey, thanks, Chris 👍
That's pretty good results Peter. Especially the measurement over that length. Thanks for sharing. Aaron.
Hey Aaron. I was actually a little surprised by the amount minimal taper in the bar from Tailstock to Chuck. Not that it really matters too much with Threads. But' it's good to know the Lathe is running fairly straight. Thanks for taking the time to watch 👍
That's a bloody long thread Peter. Nice one mate. Aaron.
It was a bit of test for when you don't do this sort work that often ?? Ironically the Steel Thread of the same length was actually worse to cut ?? Thanks so much for watching 👍
Hey do the Chuck opens up wide? Working on 5” aluminum tubing.
The Chuck Jaws will fit a part that's 5". Even larger if you reverse the Chuck Jaws 👍
Great video, always interesting to see what you have going on.
Hey Chris. Not sure how many people are enjoying watching this series of videos ?? But, it's good to get some positive comments. Thanks for watching 👍👍
Like my mentor said " With stainless don't dilly dally around. Get in and get out. Reduce the speed and increase the feed."
You're definitely right about that. Either keep it cutting, or not 👍
I’ve just come across this video. The first thing I’m really noticing is that the timer is an OMRON. Honestly, those are expensive. I have a few. It’s hard to believe they used a genuine OMRON in this model as it would be almost 20% of the total cost.
To be honest, the Timer is something that could have been let off this Positioner ?? I guess the manufacturer was trying to add as many options available to help it sell a little easier. Thanks for watching 👍
@@weldmachine all the Chinese models in this size and larger have one. I’m with you in this, I’m not sure how useful it is. The footswitch has always seemed to be fine. But possibly if I were TIG welding, having two footswitches to hassle with would be too much.
@melgross Yes, 2 foot pedals can be a pain. Especially when you didn't have a good night sleep. And your brain is trying to work out which pedal to press 😅 You can also connect a wire to the trigger and start the Positioner at the same time as you begin Welding. Usually, when I Tig Weld, I just leave it latched on continuous 👍
