    I feel like the main villain 😈 is just the narrative itself. The characters would easily become good people if they had moments of: Ted: Realising he is the problem. Barney: Realising women ♀ are not a monolith. Some want casual relationships or committed but low-maintenance. Then he could have a healthy, respectful polyamorous relationship with one e.g. with Robin. Marshall: Realising not having casual relationships when he was young was a problem. He cannot tell the difference between his genuine feelings for Lily and his hypnosis 😵‍💫 by his Unconscious feelings for Lily. He has both. Lily: Realising she is the problem. So is more affectionate to Marshall so she feels like she is bringing something to the relationship as well. Robin: Realising that she has the constant, uncaused suffering 😭 female ♀ humans are born with. So trying to find a guy to fix it is futile. And she needs to find a guy who accepts her that way and gives her time to cathartically work through the suffering every once in a while. The main problem is the writers ✍ themselves have toxic ☣ ideas. So they cannot think to add this moments for the characters. Even when it is the only plausible outcome for them. For example, Barney and Robin trying to be monogamous makes *0* sense. It is so out of character for them to try so hard for it.

Nah I dont buy it I think ted made that whole "your aunt lily broke up all my relationships" bc he didnt know what excuse to tell his kids abt why he broke up most of his relationships

    Honestly, I think you went too easy on Robin. After a few seasons, I started to realise how AWFUL she is. She‘s selfish, self-absorbed, in my opinion, and somewhat of an egomaniac. Plus, although it’s only stated outright in season 8 (i think) but that is abundantly clear, is that she just hates other women, other than Lily, because Lily is not, never was, and never will be a threat to her in the department of romantic partners to her (+ feeds her ego because Lily has sort of a crsuh on her). All she ever does it put other women and just other people down for her own gain or benefit. She never has wholesome or sweet moments that show ANY growth and she’s selfish within the robin/ted/barney love triangle again and again. She‘s rarely supportive, kind, or caring, and frankly, her only redeeming quality seems to be her beauty. Also, as much as Ted „made“ her give up her dogs, what kind of PSYCHO gives up their dogs that willingly??!! she didn’t even put up a fight for them. I would switch Lily and Robin on the suck meter. But other than that, I totally agree, great video!!

    I kinda agree with Aldrin justice thing. People should be punished for their mean unseemly behavior whether they like it or not. There are tons of people who do crazy things (like Ted's boss) and technically they're not committing a crime, but just make lives of others insufferable. You can't legally do anything with that and they know it. And you're telling me that I should just tolerate that without doing anything? No way, if someone's mean to me, I'll be way more mean to them. If we keep tolerating them they'll think that there's no punishment for their actions and just keep doing bad things. Impunity is the worst thing you can give them in situations like that

    Barney is basically a caricature and he is a bad person a lot of times but you got a back story for why he is so unhinged and damaged. Even with Robin & Lily: all 3 of these characters have severe daddy issues. But with Ted? It is never categorically established why he does the bad things he does, and it’s brushed off because “he’s a good guy” and he isn’t always a good guy

    The Problem is that Ted thinks he is the good guy and talks about how romantic and caring he is, while sleeping with loads of women througout the Show and treating some of them like shit, even disrespecting his wife, because at the end he always really just wanted Robin in the first place. Barney on the other hand knows who he is and stands up for sleeping with so much women. He doesnt pretend to be a good guy like Ted does. And Barney has a character developement, while Ted just stays the same idiot.

    this is so far from correct. I want to preface that I LOVE BARNEY!!! He is my favorite character in the show and in television in general. I think he's hilarious, but barney was an extremely awful friend in many instances. lets get into it! Instance #1: sleeping with robin. he preaches bro code but then broke it. sure, he ended up falling in love with her, but at the time, he wasn't. robin was simply ted's ex girlfriend-- not a romantic prospect. it was done purely out of lust, knowing it would hurt ted, who has upheld the bro code time and time again. Instance #2: Robin's proposal!! Not only did he lie to robin and the gang for weeks, but he chose the ONE NIGHT that was supposed to be for TED and made it about him. He turned what should have been Ted's happiest day into the worst day of his life. Barney could have chosen any other day. literally any other day. . . Instance #3: Barney completely RUINED Marshall's bachelor party. He asked ONE THING: NO STRIPPERS. Barney not only got a stripper, but caused her to need to go to the hospital, then they missed the one thing Marshall was excited for (the boxing match), and then accidentally caused a fire in the hotel. Instance #4: Barney jinxing Marshall while he was on the phone with his IDOL. Just an awful thing to do to someone for no reason other than to cause someone pain. Instance #5: Barney pretending to burn the playbook. Barney burned it to prove his loyalty to "Patrice," but the final page said "and actually burn it--you don't need it anymore" which was clearly him proving his loyalty to robin. he must have known that that would be a turning point in the way she views him. for him to not actually burn it is a genuine betrayal to robin. Instance #6: He hired Sven over Ted. Sure, he ended up changing his mind, but only after he saw that Sven wasn't fun to work with (wouldn't partake in "conference calls"). Instance #7: (not being a bad friend, but need to mention) He admits that he thinks he might have sold a woman. he says he dropped a girl off in the desert and took the money. he is a terrible person. Instance #8: also not a way he's a bad friend, but he lied to his mom for like EIGHT YEARS about having a family. He actually HIRED people to play his family. . . I get that it was done with good intentions, but at some point, enough is enough. Instance #9: When Marshall forgot his pants at work and lily delivered them, barney CUT THEM UP before an important presentation. Again with doing bad things to others for no reason. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Again, I LOVE barney. He's my favorite character of all time, but to say he doesn't suck is just not true.

Cause its just hard to understand your criteria for your rating, also what do you mean by sucks? It's kinda feels like you jump between ideas with every characters and it makes it so that the rating doesn't make sense. Like barney does worse things than Robin so he sucks more on an ethic scale but he has better development so that counts as good in writing? I just don't get it seems like you didn't have a clear idea before you wrote the video

    I think something to take into consideration when it comes to sitcoms is that they always slip in character aspects that dont really make sense or work for the narritive just for the sake of the bit. In real life a grown manchild wouldnt be able to sleep with hundreds of women in the matter of years, thats ridiculous. Under those pretenses I feel like using examples of obviously comical over the top "bit" scenarios like barney trying to score while talking like a toddler, doesnt work when realistically analyzing a character. In a sense i feel like Barney and Robin are better people than Ted and Lily simply because while they may be crude and problematic, and do bad things, theyre genuine people who dont lie to themselves or others about who they are. Ted and Lily consistently lie, live in a world of delusion and pretend to be something theyre not. Ted always judges Barney for his treatment of women, yet Ted treats them even worse. Barney is looking for one night stands and for the most part, even if they dont know his identity, most of them know what theyre getting into. Ted gets these girls to fall in love with him and then does monstrous things playing with their hearts. On top of that Ted has thrown each of his friends under the bus at different times for girls he barely knew, amd he gives no consideration for those he loves, compared to Barney who, while admittedly treats girls he just met badly, is extremely loyal to his friends to the point where he goes out of his way to put them first time and time again. Lily on the other hand, always compares herself to Robin, and tries to pretend like shes the voice of reason in the group (when its actually marshall) yet she herself is constantly manipulating others, failing to commit, lying, cheating and stealing under the false idea that she has the right to do so. When she leaves Marshall the way she did, then in later episodes acts like it wouldnt have long lasting effects on the relationship, shes giving herself entitlement and living in delusion. All in all i agree that Marshall is simply put, a great person all around. He makes mistakes and has flaws, but hes always real with himself and others about them. Hes loyal to his friends, is an excellent husband and father, an excellent friend towards Ted even when he doesnt deserve it. Ultimately all of these characters are flawed which makes them interesting, a lot of them grow throughout the series into better people, which i appreciate. I dont necessarily agree that Ted doesnt mature throughout the series, he clearly has a better, more mature understanding of relationships and friendships by the end. Hes willing to let go of Robin so her and Barney can be together, hes kinder to the girls hes involved with, and takes his friends into consideration.

    I agree with everything said except for barney. I can’t help but ignore the way he views most women as objects and uses then for his own gain. he does what he wants with them and then often disposed of them, clearly not acknowledging their feelings and humanity but as a means to an end and a game to be played. unfortunately this is still a quite common and normalized thing.

    I don’t understand why he used different standards to judge each character. - Marshal was judged off his humanity as a character - Robin was judged off her flaws in relationships - Barney was judged as a plot device - Ted was judged off his naïveté (that is the entire premise of the show btw) And I stopped watching before he got to Lily because “sucks” isn’t really a literary arguments. There were some great points in the video but if you’re going to review a series’s characters at least make it clear the metrics you’re using.

  • @Jaztec35
    @Jaztec35 12 дней назад

    I say this as someone who adores Marshall (and just completed my like my 5th rewatch recently), but it's hard to ignore his character assassination in season 9. He's still definitely the best person in the group in terms of likability, but he went off the rails at the end of season 8 and for most of 9 with him taking that job without consulting Lily then holding onto the grudge that she left him that one summer after getting engaged. He's allowed as a person to have those emotions earlier in the series and have some insecurity about it, but after 9 seasons in it's hard to justify his actions when they're happily married with a child (and a second one on the way). Lily is my least favorite in the group, but you need to toss her a bone there when she got betrayed by the one person in the world who should have her back

I can never forgive Robin for what she did to Kevin and Barney together. Like bruh, at least tell the guy you cheated on him with your friend. Lily is a *beep* and Marshal is a sweetheart!

    I feel like this is a little biased. My memory of the show doesn't serve me very well but the arguments for barney and robin here are both insufficient. Robin gets to the middle of the suck-meter because she has a jealous streak and that's it? Sounds to me more like a sucks a little bit placement. And barney gets a free pass for his lying and manipulation because that aspect of his character is played up for the plot? I get the argument being made but I don't think we can separate a character from the actions they make to the service of the plot. Also, not to mention that a lot of his lying and manipulation is more for jokes than for the plot. Do I think he's a bad person? No. As you said, Barney has some legitimate moments of connection where he shows himself to be respectful and loyal. But that is not the entirety of his character. I feel at the very least Robin and Barney are on similar levels.
