Looks like, from most of the comments, that you don't get the same product that Tilley is know for. And you don't get what you pay for anymore. So if people don't settle for less while paying more, companies and manufacturers should get the message.

I just received a new LTM3 Airflow that replaced a 20+year old LTM3 Airflow that developed tearing at the seam just above the stitching around the top of the hat band. That hat survived wind, sun, rain, dunks in the lake, and many washings in a washing machine. I live on a large lake and am an avid boater, fisherman, and golfer. The lifetime warranty was honored and the replacement hat is identical to the old one in every way even tho it was made in China. Still nylon, still the same large Velcro pocket with foam insert. Same brass snaps with maple leafs. Construction and quality identical. This model does not have a wire around the brim. It lays flat on a surface. I usually lay it flat in a suitcase, but have rolled it up a few times also and it is easily reshaped. I have worn it with both sides snapped up on occasion, but mostly with the front and back sloped down. I wanted the exact same hat and that’s what I received.

Well, its June 2022 and I just got a LTM6 and most of Tilley hats have the big label again and quality of materials and fit and finish seems the same as years ago when they were made in Canada. In any case I have no complaints about mine, except that with the heat we experience in summertime here in Spain, I wonder wether to get the Cotton version, which is called the "Hiker" (T4MO-1). As far as I know both ¨"AIRFLO” LTM5 and LTM6 have always been produced in recycled nylon. If someone prefers Cotton (even "organig cotton") Tilley makes equivalent hats in cotton material. But again, finish on my China made one is very good (as happens with my IPhone which I believe is also made in China. It all depends on the quality control requested by the brand...)

I love all my Tilley's, but if I'm buying a hat made in China, then it will NOT be a Tilley! Tilley is way too expensive to be poorly made in China!!! For the high price of these Tilley hats, they have to be made in Canada, or I have to pass!

Tilleys seem to be made in China from nylon now. I thought that Tilleys were high quality cotton made in Canada. That's why they are expensive. Buy them in a shop where you can check the quality and fit. If they really last for life, why skimp to save the price of a couple of beers? How much is the lifetime replacement worth it the replacement is cheaply made?

I bought a Tilley T3 Wanderer in 2019 and it was a nice durable hat with the leather tag sewn into it. Stiff sides and brim. In 2021 I bought the same hat and what a difference. Flimsy sides and brim, cheap feeling material and a cheap cloth tag sewn to the side like the tags you want to cut off. Definitely getting cheaper.when I emailed Tilley if I recieved a fake they told me it was a new design. I returned it.

I just received the TTW2. I immediately noticed that the workmanship and weight didn't seem to be the same quality as the Tilley's I've purchased in the past. Incidentally, I called a representative at Tilley a few weeks back, to indicate how pleased I was in the past with Tilley hats, and was looking forward to receiving the TTW2. I also mentioned that I felt that Tilley hats were a Canadian 'staple'; and I was a proud wearer of such. He immediately told me that Tilley was branching out into other clothing, and that some of the products are being made in China. Here's my personal opinion. With major corporations, the focus is one of maximizing profits, sometimes at the cost of jeopardizing quality. This is very sad, but businesses often do it. After purchasing many Tilley's over the years, I am personally discussed in the apparent reduction in quality, and this will be my last Tilley hat. I wish we could still purchase some of the original Tilley's. I still like the replacement warranty. Thanks for this kind gesture! Again, on a personal note, when businesses change ownership, they should be forced to change the name (label). Even though place of manufacturing is clearly marked on the hat, I see it as misleading the consumer! That's my personal take on this. Thanks for the great video!! I'm so glad you initiated this discussion. Great comments throughout! Clearly, I am not alone in my thoughts!!

The "Lifetime warranty" is b.s. I wore out my first Tilley hat - by washing it a lot in the tropics - and so I wore a hole through the material - and they replaced it ONE TIME and told me that had used up the warranty. I bought a second one because I liked it so much, and this one they replaced once also. I know they claim the warranty includes theft. But when it was stolen from my apt. in Chiang Mai, Thailand and the management just told me their housekeepers did not take it and there was no arguing and I felt like how would Tilley in Canada know I was not lying about it being taken anyway. So, I am looking to buy one for the third time and I am saddened to read the quality has gone down. They have sold out to the Chinese is seems. And BTW, you must have the large pocket inside. It is just big enough to hold a passport and some cash or stash. If you are travelling a smaller pocket just won't do.

I bought a LTM6 last Nov (2018 from Tilley via their website. Paid full price for what I thought would be a superior hat. It has the smaller label but it looked good. I wore it on a trip to Maui last Feb and got some sunscreen on the inner brim. I decided to hand--wash and brush it, but stain still was there. I washed it on the hand-wash cycle and took it out to air dry. After this, it wasn't the same hat. The brim had 'crinkled' in about 4 different areas, and even when I tried to reshape the hat, it looked worse than my $20 Columbia hat. I even tried to iron the brim as someone suggested. Emailed Tilley Customer Support and no reply. I finally called them, call was disconnected. Called again and got a 'sleepy'-voiced guy who gave me instructions to mail it back (Tonawands, NY?) with my credit card number. They would try to fix it or replace it. He said it would be about 4-6 weeks til I got it back. Thanks for this posting, Leonard. I saw how this hat looked on a bunch of Canadian photographers last year, and it was the hat I wanted. I don't feel I got the same quality hat as I've seen in RUclips videos lately. Ashame....I see they've sold out to a UK company. This will be my last Tilley hat for awhile.

Tilley typically puts the month and year of manufacture on the third tag down. The first tag is the size and the second is the model. Without your providing this information, it is hard to say for sure what you have, although you probably do have a new model direct from Tilley. These hats are made to be packed in a suitcase, and they do not require a hat box to store them because neither the brim nor the crown is fixed. The fact that one of the hats is more crisp after shipping is irrelevant. You did not put them on your head for us to see! They straighten out. I have packed a Tilley made with the same material as your model in a suitcase, and it comes out fine. Tilley's box is correct. Your particular model is a snap-up and it does not have a wire in the brim, but the majority of Tilley hats do indeed have a wire in the brim--and you want them to lie flat during shipping. Many sellers bend the brims during shipping by using boxes that are too small and this affects the wire. You have not realized it yet, but Great Lakes Outpost does not know what they are doing by using a box that potentially bends the brim. Do you think that their shipping personnel are smart enough to know which models have wires in the brim and which do not? You simply got away with it because of the particular model you purchased. Don't worry about what the brim looks like when it's lying flat in the Tilley box. It will do that when you store it on a flat surface, as well, because the brim has a contour. When it goes on your head, it will do what it is supposed to do: Tilley makes their hats so they have a contour to them, with both the front and back sloping downward. Some models have a more aggressive contour than others. This gives you protection from the sun on the back of your neck, and it keeps the sun out of your eyes as much as possible. Because of the contour, the brim cannot contour downward on a flat surface so it tends to curl up during storage when lying flat. For much of your video you are concerned over nothing. The only thing that you have said which possibly has some merit is the lack of Velcro. These particular models are competing against cheaper competition, and it is possible that Tilley took some cost cutting measures in eliminating the Velcro. I believe that it is true that Tilley has cheapened some models. For instance, I do believe that the redesign of the TTMC cap was not improved by the TMBC cap. But, I have heard it said many times that Tilley has cheapened their T3 over the years. My oldest T3 is from November, 2000, and I do not see that it has been cheapened. I have a navy T3 from December, 2015 that is the favorite in my collection of twenty-four (24) Tilley summer hats and eleven (11) Tilley winter hats. Also, I have a T4MO-1 Hiker's Hat that Tilley redesigned over the last few years from the previous T4MO organic cotton model. I definitely feel that it has been improved by the addition of the HyperKewl cooling insert and the loop to hang the hat. I was using it just today while out in the hot sun cutting the grass with the cooling insert helping to keep me cool. I know that you want a quick black and white answer to your general question if Tilley is cheapening their hats, but some things are not that easily answered.

    • @richardsawdon3401
      @richardsawdon3401 6 лет назад

If you watch this video, you can pause it at 3 minutes and 42 seconds to see that the hat which came from Tilley (that is assumed to be newer) has the 4 maple leaves on the British Brass snap-up buttons. I could not get a definitive view of the one from Great Lakes Outpost (that is assume to be older style). On Tilley's website, the pictures of the natural and khaki colors for both the T3 Cotton Duck and the LTM3 Airflow are still using the British Brass with the 4 maple leaves. I could not determine from the picture of the olive T3 Cotton Duck on Tilley's website what it uses, but the one in my collection from several years ago is British Brass with the 4 maple leaves. The flat black snaps that they use on the some of the models such as the T3 Wanderer hat and the TWS1 Paddler's hat do not have the 4 maple leaves. One of the merchants who I have purchased from in the past told me that Tilley is trying to appeal to younger people with many of their newer offerings. In the past, this merchant has usually had pretty good insights into the Tilley product line, so I assume that's it. I have flat black snaps on a TM3 hemp blend mash-up snap-up model that was discontinued in the last year or so. I like the British Brass snaps better in general for being classier, but I do have to admit that the flat black is visually effective--and I think that's probably what they were trying to achieve with it. It should be noted that if you browse the Tilley website, you will see many pictures of the brims curling up because the hats are lying on a flat surface and the brim cannot contour downward unless it's on your head, as I mentioned in my original comment.

She told me at this point last year that she thought the Wanderer would appeal to young people, and she was going to stock a lot more of them this summer. I have not yet talked to her again about it specifically, so I don't know how she's doing with it. She did tell me a few weeks ago that the Paddler's Hat had not done so well for her this summer. It would be interesting to hear your initial impressions about the Wanderer hat.

While I did not find that impressive that didn’t matter. I lost it 2 days after I purchased it at an airport. Tilley sent me a replacement hat and I paid 50% of the original cost of the hat plus $10 in shipping. This one has Velcro in the pocket at the top of the hat. Which makes sense. It has a crisper look, however, even though the headband fits well...... the top of the hat is smaller and it feels like it’s going to pop off of my head. So it seems well-made but it doesn’t fit me now. I wish I could show a photo of both of them. I’m sending it back.

I've owned eight Tilley hats. I bought one a month ago. The one you got from Amazon is how the one from Tilley should have looked. You should have contacted Tilley immediately. Tilley stands behind their product and I am sure they will get this straightened out.

No, they won't. Tilley was bought out by an investor group. Now the majority of their hats are Chinese rubbish. They are not the same company at all.

@@sandfarmer892 Wow! I hope you are wrong because I would hate to see Tilley go the way of so many products. I’ll look into this. Can you send me a link with some info please?

@@eddyaruda486 I looked at a LTM6 at Cabela's two days ago and was shocked at the poor quality. Tag read "Made in China/ Designed in Canada" They discontinued the TH4 Hemp( which I wore out 3 and bought many as gifts,) and the T2. As far as links; the information is out there. I don't have an agenda, just wouldn't pay $90 for a $30 hat. I will not purchase another Tilley.

@@sandfarmer892 Wow! I'll look into this. I have noticed that the tag on the inside of the brim was askew on my last two hats. Also, they now make it more difficult and charge you a handling fee for exchanging a product. Sigh!

I spoke with Tilley after receiving my mashup hat. I also bought it from Great Lakes Outpost off Amazon and it was missing the manual. After speaking to Great Lakes and then Tilley, Tilley said that they stopped printing the 4 page manual and said the instructions are viewable online. I agree, I like the manual and larger print with the Velcro. Luckily my mashup and Airflow have the larger print/Velcro but the Boca Rotan hat I just bought for beaches/summer has the new look and lacks those vintage Tilley features. I think I read somewhere that Tilley was sold, so maybe that has something to do with the change. Still love them and glad they still offer the lifetime warranty.

Noticed the exact same thing for the first time the other night at REI. Had the same questions when I noticed the inside of the crown. Felt like overall hat material was same, but the elements you called out seemed like small cost saving shortcuts.
