Hi, thanks for checking out my video and the great comment. I really like the Tamiya range of flexible masking tape and this is the tape I used for this model. I always use this tape to get good results and crisp lines (I don't always get it right!). If possible always try to spray away from the edge of your masking and only spray fine coats initially and be patient and allow good drying time. This is an easier thing to do if you're spraying from an airbrush. If you use rattle cans you can use the method of putting down a clear layer first and allowing to dry. You can get great results using this method as the clear will seal the edge of your tape allowing you to spray your colour over the top of the clear and limiting the possibility of paint bleed. When you apply your flexible tape, ensure it is pressed firmly against the bodywork. Use your nail or a smooth plastic tool or small paint brush handle to run along the edge so the tape makes good contact. Don't over stretch your tape, allow it to sit naturally against the surface with no tension. This will stop the tape from shrinking away from the model. Store your tape in a sealed container away from dust and hairs as this can lead to paint bleed. Hope that helps. Above all else make sure your enjoying the hobby and keep at it. ATB Darren 👍

@@totallytamiya Thanks for the detailed reply. I will get some Tamiya masking tape and probably some other tape as well. The contours of the Hornet body around the roof bars are quite intricate, so I know the masking needs to be stuck down very securely. I think I'd rather have a strong adhesive tape that leaves some residue than have the tape lift and cause bleeding. I'm using the Tamiya rattle cans.

I've had this kit sitting around for a while now, I've been absorbed in an RC fishing trawler build for quite some time and needed a break from sanding the hull. Hi John, I built this kit totally stock. I used rattle cans for most of this paint work. Paints used were PS-1 White backed with PS-41 Bright Silver then backed with Hobbynox Black airbrush paint. Tamiya White base coat to the tail followed by TS-26 Pure White and Tamiya X-18 Semi Gloss Black through airbrush for details. I used kit decals for window surrounds. Tip for your new airbrush John. Decanted PS and TS paints spray beautifully through your airbrush. Allow decanted paint to gas off before using. ATB Darren 👍

Hi Colin, thanks for the great comment. You can deal with PS overspray with some Tamiya polycarbonate cleaner. Use cotton buds to apply gently until the overspray is gone. Mask up again and spray the affected area. Try flexible masking tape, make sure you apply plenty of pressure to tape, paying particular attention to the edges. I'll hopefully get around to doing a tutorial for decals. Take your time and above all else have fun and enjoy. What kit did you decide to build first? ATB Darren 👍

That's quite a body kit for your first build! Those decals will present a challenge if you're not used to them. If you're spraying from cans you'll need to decant some PS into a container. Lots of great videos on RUclips for decanting. When paint has settled use a small brush to apply. I find the best thing to do is pool PS rather than brush it. With small areas to correct you won't see brush strokes if you pool the paint. Let it dry between a number of coats. You can then back it all with black, silver or white depending on body colour and you'll never know you made a correction. Hope that helps. ATB Darren 👍

Hi, thanks for taking a look and leaving a great comment. The painting of this one wasn't too difficult. Masking off was probably the most time consuming bit. You certainly do need a little patience with it, especially the decals. Decal fatigue comes as standard with this kit! 😂 ATB Darren 👍

tedious as it seems, i have been thinking of masking off the insides of the light lenses before spraying them black and adding some lights

@@Bobblyfett I think that's an excellent idea. I'd like to see that. It's something I'd considered myself. @@totallytamiya Thanks Darren.tt02 built and upgraded to a drift spec. shells all cut out and masking for the black paint. maybe paint just the flat part of the sideskirts black? also thinking of painting the cunards black or orange maybe.

Hi, thanks for taking a look and leaving a comment. I do intend to expand on this subject, ideally with suitable audio but my current set up doesn't really accommodate for this. I could do these bodywork videos in stages with points of reference along the way if that will help. I'm not very familiar with the XV-01 chassis but I'm sure I've seen TT-02 body sets adapted to that chassis. Ideally I would have liked to see this body set without pre drilled body mount holes. 👍 ATB Darren.

Hi, thanks for taking a look and leaving a great comment. The Grasshopper was the start of it all for me. Of course, back then I couldn't afford to buy a Grasshopper! I swapped a cassette tape for a bashed up Grasshopper that had seen much better days and embarked upon a restoration with a paintbrush and two pots of Tamiya paint. I still have it to this day. I'd like to say it's all original but if your familiar with Triggers broom from the famous sitcom 'Only Fools & Horses' you'll understand what I mean! 🤣 Have fun with your next build and I hope my video is of some help.👍 ATB Darren.

Hi, thanks for the great comment. The paints I used for this model are a mix of Pro-Line and Hobbynox airbrush range. Yes, more orange cars would be great. Perhaps we don't get so many due to the possibility of orange peel effect!😜👍 ATB Darren.

Hi, Thanks for taking a look and leaving a comment. It's shelf queen status at the moment but I'll most likely use a 7.2V NIMH. I had considered getting the Tamiya LF1100 6.6V M-Size Battery for it. I don't have any experience with the LF1100 but I may well look into it nearer the time. The 7.2V NIMH slots in nice following the removal of the battery clamps. ATB Darren.👍

Hi Addam, thanks for taking a look and commenting. Ah! the Sand Scorcher, it's a fine looking RC with a challenging box art paint scheme. Not one for the faint-hearted! I've been considering an alternative paint scheme for this one but it's been a while since my last ABS body so it'll be challenging enough as it is! I'll give it some thought!👍 ATB Darren.

@@totallytamiya yeah, that is the biggest catch with it but I think I can can concur it! It would be good practice to build this one first so I can breeze through the scorcher chassis and focus on the body!! Sounds like a good enough excuse to me!!

@@totallytamiya I had a Super Champ, same thing different name, I used to put a cable tie around the top of the bottle cap else the cap would pop off, and shorten the tube to reduce bubbles in the line. But all shocks leaked, all the time, I tried cutting fingers of surgical gloves and cover the shocks to keep dirt out, semi-successful.

You can't beat a bit of improvisation. I've given up on trying to get rid of the bubbles. You've only got to look at it and bubbles appear. It's a fun kit and I enjoyed the build. Thanks for taking a look and leaving a great comment. ATB Darren.👍

🤣Pikachu! I never gave it a thought at the time but yes I agree🤣 Masking wasn't too bad, the headlights were a little bit of a challenge due to restricted space. Rear spoiler was relatively straight forward although I had some mopping up to do later due to entry point in masking. I ended up with a haze of grey throughout the body that was easily cleared with some polycarbonate cleaner. The running boards were straight forward. Thanks for taking a look and the great comment.
