Nice little set! My first ever train set was in the 70s, R553 Hornby clock work and my first electric train set was R556 intercity 125 again late 70s! As much as I’d love to have a little set and this would be ideal, personally I really can’t justify £340 for what you actually get. Still a nice little set though.
Thanks Peachy, another good video - keep up the good work!

It is annoying that Hornby has only released the HST as a set and not a Train Pack! They must have thought of doing this. I wonder if they will announce TT120 train packs in the 2025 range? I got the Easterner Set, but I was disappointed with the coaches as the wheels scrape the sole bars! The HST set looks super cool, but it means buying another set of track! Thanks for uploading.
@@AllensTrains hi. I think Hornby have now sorted the scraping bogie issue (at least on the Mk1’s) as for the HST’s they’re all available outside of the set. I think some retailers have grouped them and the coaches together as a discounted “bundle” (certainly Malc’s Models did as that’s how I bought the GWR Era11 version)
Well that was a really nice and friendly video for anyone who's starting off with one of these sets, or with TT120 generally. Having read about a few issues on the forum and solutions offered I did wonder how anyone not on the forum might cope with any problems. This will be a great help to anyone in that situation. PS - Stop telling us how great the next year is going to be for TT120. You just keep wetting my appetite, and my wallet is getting worried. 🤣

Important! You need to lower sound to around 20, not only because of it might be loud, BUT because it might get HOT. There is is post about this on the forum. PS: Thanks for the video, great 👍 I am waiting for my set :-)

Hi Chris. my blue and grey loco went round the test track 4 times and then the motor died. Have contacted hornby and awaiting their reply. 3 x66 no problem and gronk 3 no problem. Caroline.
@@carolinecleaveley-q1r that’s bad luck. Thankfully Hornby do seem to have a good no quibble attitude towards these unfortunate issues. Fingers crossed the replacement works well. 🤞
Do we see the base plate of your future layout here? There is so much space for all sorts of possibilities. Have you already drawn up a track plan? Can we see it? Happy new year 2025!

Hi Chris. Happy new year. On the subject of programming a new loco on the track with HM7000 does doing this in isolation apply to all new locos, not just the HST set which has 2 HST cars with decoders? Another question. Given the size of the Hornby stay alive boards clearly there is the space for them in the HST cars but how about other locos in the Hornby range? A big subject that may warrant its own video for newcomers with maybe a demonstration of the benefits of the stay alive unit. A loco without a stay alive coming to a complete stop on a poorly arranged section of track for example versus the same loco with a stay alive fitted. Apologise in advance if this has already been done.
@@garyleigh7231 hello Garry, it’s just considered best practice, nobody’s 100% sure why, but although you can program with other locos on the track and you can program into other slots than “3”. I’ll bet my shirt that 9 times out of 10 something won’t upload correctly and you’ll have to start again… I’ve programmed a lot of HM7000 decoders since working for TMC and I promise, it just makes things easier
That was quick Chris. You are an early riser! I have edited my comment with a further question. Just to add I have had one or two new loco HM7000 set up issues but this was with all locos on the layout. In future I will programme new locos on their own. Good info thanks!

If I was starting with TT now instead of a year ago I would’ve definitely bought this set. I find the default couplings frustrating and use the magnetic ones on all my locos and wagons / coaches. Never looked back.
@@timallen_uk totally agree 👍
@ I’m surprised I got a reply at this hour of the night, talk about dedication . Thought it would be just me at this hour 🤣 joy of working nights.
@ toothache… can’t sleep! 🤣
@@PeachyTT120 ouch, no worse pain. CO-codamol (paracetamol & codeine) are good for toothache assuming you're ok to take them ie not allergic. You can buy 8/500mg (8 codeine and 500 paracetamol) over the counter. Ibuprofen is also good assuming you can take it ie no stomach ulcers, not taking blood pressure meds, not asthmatic or taking anticoagulants. Taking different types of pain relief helps because they cover different pain receptors, at work for severe pain I'll usually administer multiple types of pain relief for this reason. Pharmacist will be able to advise with medical conditions and other meds you take. Hope you're sorted soon.
The Loco Address is totally irrelevant for BLE and can be left at 3. Why complicate things for a "new user" video?
@@davidhodgins2735 I disagree. In my experience of programming hundreds of locomotives on HM7000, I have consistently found leaving 3 to program on only has reduced the amount of failed uploading of sound profiles.
@@PeachyTT120that’s really interesting Chris. I was also going to say it doesn’t matter but I wasn’t aware of that issue. Is it acknowledged by the experts? 😉

Hi Chris. Excellent video. Presumably, you need a 2nd decoder for the DVT for lighting and sound? I guess you only need a power bank for the power car? Happy New Year to you and the family.
@@PaulSmith-pl7fo yes, if you want sound and all the light functions you need a decoder in both dummy & power cars. The DCC fitted set has them both already pre-installed, which makes them great value for money. If you’re upgrading a “DCC ready” (DC version) you only “need” to fit a decoder in the power car, but that does limit the dummy to have basic light functions controlled by the polarity of the track rather than its direction. (And of course no sound) You don’t “need” any stay-alives/power banks, but to help with Bluetooth connectivity I fit one with every decoder
Car, they're fixed, without buffers, like an underground car. Carriages have buffers and are an individual unit. That's what I was taught.
@@madhatter61 cheers Joe, every day’s a school day 🫡
Very clear and helpful. I wish I had learned earlier about assigning a new number on HM7000, it caused me no end of issues. I wish there was a 'Install new loco' button.
@@trevorbellTT120 yeah that would have been helpful seeing as so many are new to this
@@PeachyTT120 The loco address is irrelevant. It is only for DCC controllers.
@ not in my experience. I’ll stand by this piece of advise 100%
Yes, as a DCC user you don't even think about it, you automatically assign a new number. For Bluetooth users, however, the information is all the more valuable.
@@PeachyTT120 BLE uses a unique 48 bit binary address usually expressed in hexadecimal format for packet transfers, that is >281 quadrillion unique addresses. Do you think it really uses a user supplied address between 1 and 9999?

Will be getting one of these. Just coming back to model railways after years and love the TT120 scale. Do you mind me asking what software you run them on? The PC control looks interesting and daft question - do the locos come with sound fitted as an option? Cheers Mark
@@MarkBatchelor-e4k hello, I use the free to download HM7000 app from Hornby. They sell two versions of each livery, “DCC ready” or “DCC fitted” the DCC fitted versions have a decoder & speaker already installed. Either way (pre installed or you fitting a HM7000 decoder) you need to download the sound profile within the app.
The Hornby don’t fit. I tried different locations. The only way would be to butcher one of the cab interiors.
@@peteralbertthomas yeah I had a sneaky feeling that it wouldn’t. I mentioned this earlier in the year when I got hold of a test version. I cancelled all my orders of them (apart from the ones I want in my HST’s) and cracked on with the micro versions from DCC concepts & Train-o-matic
Peachy can you tell me if there is enough room in the blink bonny engine for some lead to add weight as mine will not pull the pullmans coaches.... Wheels just spin. Thanks for any help 👍
@@philsilva13 not much space tbh. What I did was cut away the white metal lump that Hornby cast as part of the chassis for weight, and replaced it with lead. It more than doubled the weight of the cast metal that I removed. And seriously helped the traction

@@dougbull3289 cheers Doug, 🍻
Merry Christmas, what an excellent chat. I've been an erstwhile fan of tt for decades now, (German) and pleasantly surprised with the launch of the Hornby range. Tbh, I'm less than impressed by the number of commentators who take Hornby to task over the limited range. It took Hornby dublo nearly twenty years to produce for than 4 locos. Triang was considerably better, but still took 10 years to get anything remotely close to what the UK tt range is now. British Trix had around 4 locos through the sixties. Graham Farish had two. Along with the modern expectation of superlative detail, we also seem to have acquired a modern expectation of the instant release of a vast range that will satisfy every need imaginable. I waited nearly 2 years for my pre-ordered tillig E77, the UK tt scene is almost spoilt by Hornby. And prices: a high spec fischer, or beckmann: you're looking at around €700 (what's that, £600 odd?). Model trains are expensive, they always have been (for those with rose tinted glasses, my first set was a second-hand hornby 0, as a triang set was too expensive). I have but one bugbear with Hornby: why name it tt120? It's tt, thats all: the original triang tt was specifically named tt3 to differentiate it from scale tt. So the new nomenclature is to differentiate it from the old name that differentiated it. Back in '38 Hornby didn't name it 00 76 to tell it apart from the Trix, Märklin 00 90. Is it called 0 43.5 to tell it apart from the continental 0 45? TT120 is just silly. When tt first came out in the early postwar period it was termed tt in the US. Both Germany and the Swiss didn't give the size even a name (incidentally thats why HP is erroneously credited for "inventing" the scale)
@@muir8009 I couldn’t agree with you more. Price wise I’m happy, Range and release schedule I’m more than happy. As for the name, in some areas it’s already starting to lose the 120, especially on retailer’s websites. I get why they did it though.

@@kiwitrains normally I’d agree, but I’m guessing Hornby’s returns department has begged for this change… at least until the design dept can come up with a more robust way of securing screws in the bodies. 🤣
Here's my 'letter to Santa' for a tt 120 wishlist: class 47; class 25 (+sub types); BR standard 4 (4-6-0 tender and 2-6-4 tank); Black 5; jinty; 4F; 8F; Ivatt 2-6-2t; 57xx; 45xx; Hall or Manor; B set or autocoach; B1; J94 (both main and industrials); BR Mk1 full brake and buffet cars; Mk1 GUV; tubular post uq signals; curved point (R3 to R4); Y point.
