Leisure Suit Larry 3 on the Yamaha FB-01
Просмотров 6168 лет назад
After moving my beloved Yamaha FB-01 halfway around the globe, I got around to recording the long overdue Larry 3 on it. Used a special version of Dosbox and the GOG version of LSL3. Credits to the original composer and Sierra. I wish they kept FB-01 support with later adventures as well, but hey...

Recording of Duke Nukem 3d's main theme and first level on a Roland MT-32 Sound Module in GM mode. The MT-32 is not fully GM compatible, a certain level of compatibility can be achieved by remapping it via sysex messages. This is not really supposed to sound good, I just did this because it's possible.

    Some instruments are wrong in these recordings. The typewrtier sound in intro and the whistle sound on chichi bar. Maybe the wrong driver or corrupted sysex (midi overflow?)

    i'm unable to make dosbox use the mt-32 properly. munt is working, music is heard and the windows lights up correclty but some instruments are wrongly assigned (slap bass). this makes me think that a wrong GM/GS table is used, but idk where the fault lays, if in the roms, in munt, in dosbox or in the windows devices. any ideas?

      Do you have other modules? Do they work well with your MIDI adapter (which I am assuming would be a USD-MIDI adapter)? From the sound of it, I would guess your MT-32 does not receive the custom instructions correctly. I have two MT-32s and both of them worked "out of the box". Is there any interfereing MIDI-mapping software in your setup that could be responsible?

    Nice, so did all of the games in this playlist support the IBM Music Feature Card/YM2164 or are you just making them use it anyway somehow? This doesn't sound like it's fully utilizing the chip's 8 channels and effects like LFO for better percussion sounds. Wikipedia only lists these games: King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella, Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (in Several Wrong Places), Leisure Suit Larry III: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals, Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon and Silpheed. Also, this is a more advanced question but can you confirm if this chip actually supports 4 waveform types instead of 1 (sine wave) like the YM2151? That would make it a superior chip, if used correctly that is.

      Hi, yes, these Sierra games all had drivers for the IMFC/FB-01, selected during installation/setup. I think the support for this module was more like an afterthought, as originally these must have been composed on an MT-32.

    I am thinking of using this unit to be controlled by the lower manual of my Hammond clone for extra voices - Front panel octave shift is most necessary when using this with a five-octave keyboard. Is this possible on the JV-1010 without the use of an external device?

    • @dixieking
      @dixieking 10 лет назад

      I don't think it is possible on this module, it does not have the panel controls of a Sc-55/Sc-88 or a Yamaha like the MU50.

    What mode was the SC-88VL in? You can change it to SC-55 or CM-64 mode. The CM-64 mode should be pretty close. There is also a utility/patch to set it to MT-32 mode at www.houseofsynth.com/roland-gs-general-standard-to-mt-32-conversion-utility

    • @davidambrus502
      @davidambrus502 10 лет назад

      psychoticgiraffe I think this might be the issue: before starting any game or program, make sure to turn off the "memory protect" function on your FB-01. The drum data is probably coming from the game, but memprotect blocks it if it is not disabled. It's under system setup. Let me know if this worked :)

    • @psychoticgiraffe
      @psychoticgiraffe 10 лет назад

      ***** oh I see, but why can't i make any midi file do this to the fb-01 with it's drum channel as most of these games used midi if i wanted to implement those drums into the memory semi permanantly how would i do that

    • @davidambrus502
      @davidambrus502 10 лет назад

      psychoticgiraffe Sorry, that's beyond my depth. The issue might be that FB-01 is MIDI, but it predates the General MIDI standard, and handles channels differently, plus does not have dynamic instrument mapping (so you cannot change an instrument during a song). Did you try using fb01se to create/save your drum setup?

  • @wocko1

    The FB-01 actually sounds really great with this, it's sounds similar to an Adlib (due to both being FM based synths), but the FB-01 soundtrack in this game blows the Adlib out of the water. It's not real hard since the Adlib soundtrack for this game sounded like complete arse even though the Adlib had a LOT more potential. The soundtrack of Dune 1 comes to mind. Though if you want the best music with PQ2, of course, the MT-32 smashes the competition (well this game's music was composed with an MT-32)

  • @thunkrd

  • @dixieking

    Unfortunately, nothing yet. It's quite haphazard, sometimes GM midi sounds good, sometimes completely off or nothing at all. I don't really have time lately, but I guess it's just about remapping the instruments (and taking care of the issue of polyphony...)

    Thanks for posting these! It's great to hear one of the old music options from back in the day. This is an interesting mix... some parts sound better than Adlib, some sound worse. I can tell if Sierra put effort into remixing the music for the module, it could have sounded really good.

  • @dixieking
    @dixieking 11 лет назад

    Basicly, you plug the "out" port of the USB-to-Midi adapter in the "IN" port of the JV-1010. The "in" plug of the adapter is not of much use (as far as I know) so I leave it hanging around. I hope this answers the question - sorry for the delay, was on vacation :)

  • @dixieking
    @dixieking 11 лет назад

    The JV-1010 version is probably my favorite as well. I usually love the punchy Yamaha MU sounds, but they are a bit unbalanced in this case. The MT-32 has a different flavor too, but still, the JV is so well balanced that the tune has this feeling that the tune was composed for it. I am planning a comparison of these modules with the Dune 2 soundtrack, will see how it goes...

  • @dixieking
    @dixieking 11 лет назад

    Unfortunately, I have not found a midi file player for the FB01. It would need to be specific to the device, as the FB01 is not General Midi and has completely different instrument maps. I have also been looking for a midi or sysex file that would remap the FB01 to something similar to the GM map (like you can with the MT32), but no success there either. I wish I had the background to do this myself...

  • @dixieking
    @dixieking 11 лет назад

    Make sure you have the fb01.drv file in the game folder to be able to select the FB01 in the setup. I use dosbox and a generic USB-midi adapter. There is a special build of dosbox for the FB01 (fixing midi buffer issues, if I understood correctly) on the VOGONS forums, that is the one I used for this video. Also, but you probably know this, turn off the "memory protect" feature of your FB01.

  • @psychoticgiraffe
    @psychoticgiraffe 11 лет назад

    Is there any way to do the same thing with midis as you are with dos box?

  • @psychoticgiraffe
    @psychoticgiraffe 11 лет назад

    How'd you make the game use the fb01 as the sound module?

  • @dixieking
    @dixieking 11 лет назад

    Tie Fighter is set to General Midi, so it is not JV specific. Windows Vista and later do not have easily accessible ways to select midi output and defaults to MS GS synth, which is rather crappy. Editing the registry or using third party tools (like PLWMidiMap.cpl) allows you to change the midi output device, e.g. to the USB to midi adapter. Sorry if this was redundant, but this should solve the problem if I understood you correctly.

  • @dixieking
    @dixieking 11 лет назад

    The JV-1010 only does the midi music, the sound effects and speech are courtesy of dosbox' Sound Blaster 16 emulation (unfortunately)...

  • @dixieking
    @dixieking 11 лет назад

    Yes, generic USB to MIDI adapter and a modified version of Dosbox on Win7. Works surprisingly well, considering the age of the module...
