My New Favourite Thing in the Violin Workshop! simple fully adjustable vice system
Просмотров 21516 часов назад
In Graham Vincent's violin making workshop there seems to be a jig for everything... but this one is by far my favourite at the moment! A simple homemade 360° fully adjustable vice system This tool makes it so comfortable to carve scrolls for example, but could be used for lots of other things as well

It's really coming along! Very exciting!
Prachtig instrument, veel succes met je carrière
Hi Thibaux, been enjoying watching your progress of the build on Grahams channel, i made my first violin out of cherry, i love the idea of using alternative woods to the norm. Im currently on my second build using walnut for the back, ribs and neck and maybe the top too. Do you think you'll carry on making violins using alternative woods?
@@mickcarr2744 I'm glad you like the videos! Yes I think there is a high likelihood I will continue working with alternative woods, at least back ribs and necks I'm completely sold on the idea of using all sorts of woods, it just makes it all so much more interesting! As for hardwood fronts I don't know yet but who knows maybe the sound of my first hardwood fronted violin will completely convince me!
Hello Thibault. Greetings from Spain. I have been following you on Graham's channel. Thanks for this video. After seeing you work the scroll I think I will buy this cute vise.
@@deirdre6123 thanks for watching! I'm glad you like the system!
What is the purpose of the two wood screws in the wooden frame?
@@CooperViolins they are simply there to make absolutely sure that the ball end of the vice can't accidentally fall out. And the screws are of course not tightened very much.
@@thibaultjaberg Thanks, that makes sense. This vise looks useful, I may get one when I start working on my scroll.
Thanks for giving a little more detail about the specific qualities you changed and why you made those decisions! Could trimming the bass bar and retuning the bridge help with the fuzziness? The whole thing looks amazing and sounds good.
@@Fireman9143 thanks for your comments! Trimming the bass bar I'm not sure about, this would make the whole system even more flexible... However refining the bridge, yes absolutely! This is something I will definitely experiment with, to try and achieve a bridge which filters as few high frequencies as possible
Thanks for the detailed views and explanations, especially the purfling corners! I haven't yet made a violin. I'm learning from everyone I can. Other makers have said to make the violin arching opposite the slab curves. I don't know the difference and am really interested to see how your violin turns out.
@@Fireman9143 yes of course from a stability point of view, in terms of how wood actually works, it would make the most sense to have the growth rings opposite the arching curve... However as this violin is about learning new things we decided to go for the opposite! I'm sure I will talk a lot more about this in future videos!
Are the scroll, and other parts like linings and blocks, all made from cherry too? Nevermind, should have watched your previous video first. I'll leave this comment for the algorithm
Have you seen a Pellegrina viola?
@@paramisamadhi yes I have seen them before, they certainly seem quite an interesting way to enlarge to surface area and volume without making it too long
I congratulate you on your small Viola! I think you are brilliant in your selection of a willow back. Please consider having a concert Viola player audition your new creation. I think you are on to something! Thank you!
@@ChrisEbbrsen Thanks for the kind comment! Actually this Viola has been played on trial by a professional violist in quite a few concerts! And I was also able to show the instrument to a professor at a local music university
Thibault, That's a really interesting instrument! My opinion (as an untrained amateur first time maker, so take it for what it's worth) is that the low end does indeed sound unfocused, but as you pointed out, string choice may resolve that issue. Maybe something with more tension? Ages ago I was a salesman for a violin shop, and I remember one client in particular that took a long time to find a good small viola for herself that was the same back length as this one here. But when she found it, watching her play it for the first time, it was clear she fell in love with it. That was really special. All in all, I think that your choices regarding string length, bout size, and wood choice are on the right track. Thank you for sharing your work!
Thank you for the comment Brian! And interesting story! Yes I think there is still a lot for me to learn and experiment with in the field of small violas
@ Speaking of experimentation, enjoy your time interning with Mr. Vincent. What an enviable opportunity that is!
Hehe Thanks! Yes I am extremely lucky to be spending those six weeks with Graham!
how long have you been playing for?
I have now been playing the violin for 4 years
ton vernis vert est magnifique👋
An interesting experiment! I’ve been enjoying the build videos posted for this so far.
super ton travail, mais je n'ai pas d'idées pour la suite pour ton violon qui devrait être (branlant) wobbly.
👍bravo pour ton projet qui est très intéressant, je me réjouis de voir la suite.
well done dear Thibault
Thanks, soulful rendition
Beautiful, well done and touching. Mistro Almeida would have been very pleased to hear you play this piece. Chech out some of his commissioned works from Contemporary Creations for Spanish Guitar, ruclips.net/video/i62iZ2fwWO8/видео.html
Thank you for such an outstanding and soulful interpretation of this beautiful song and challenging arrangement! Just great.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I wasn't expecting something like that when I uploaded the video. After all the rendition is far from perfect and im still working on this piece but I thought I would upload it anyway to show a few people
@@thibaultjaberg So I am looking forward to an even better video of this song from you!
