I think the reason why most of the Hannibal portrayals are so good (haven’t seen Rising so I can’t speak for it) is because each actor does their own thing with the character. Cox acts somewhat normal, but there’s something subtle about him which creeps you out. Hopkins oozes with malice and makes his evil nature apparent to everyone he meets. Mikkelsen is much more calculated and quiet with his methods as if he were always planning two steps ahead. None of these actors try to replicate each other, allowing them to elevate Hannibal Lecter as a horror icon
