This Film is a Cautionary Tale for Christian Artists
In this video, we talk about the Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim and why I think this film is a cautionary tale for Christian artists. This anime-inspired Lord of the Rings film is something for Christian artists to take note of. We discuss stewardship of your gifts and skills, and why we must take care of and improve the talents God has given us. If you're a Christian filmmaker, musician, or artist, it's vital that you take action on the things we discuss in this video.

Yes social issue films (as I call them) really make the best horror films because they seemingly uncover some deep perplexity that society is dealing with in the collective psyche. It hits on something meaningful in humanity.
Some theorize that men are more visual or spatial in our awareness. So the show-don’t tell maxim of filmmaking makes sense for us. This also answers why female directed films often have more dialogue or “telling” as opposed to focusing on great iconic visuals. Many theories exist on how this male-female dynamic manifests in great cinema.
Amen 🙏
The way Hollywood is now, if we just depicted a Christian being correct or courageous in a film it would be *shocking* to watch. 😂
@culturalwarfarewithjoncroft I see what you're saying. I'd say though; when Heretic came out last year, granted, it's a Mormom movie, but the villain is an atheist and the heroes are Mormons. The movie has positive reviews and made a crap ton of money.
Biggest message for me in Silence was that good film doesn’t provide easy answers. Yet so many faith-based films just assume the questions are answered and that there are no difficulties in life when answering tough questions. This is just plain false. Truth is, sometimes we are presented with no-win situations. What do we even do with that?
Hollywood is movie corporations to make money and is where the government puts propaganda. Paint 🎨 about God donate your paintings instead of trying to make money off of his name
If we can't make money from art that references God then all good art would be moot.
Yes- true authenticity is required to make both good art and a real statement of faith.
One that doesn’t compromise both form nor function. Form: to display God’s beauty through good art. Function: to give God glory by our testimony of truth.
So many possibilities
Let’s do it! 😎
@@culturalwarfarewithjoncroft We should. The Lord of the Rings movies ALONE won more Oscars than Star Wars and Harry Potter, and they only had THREE MOVIES! 17 Oscar wins. The next time any Christian says that Hollywood will never accept Christian movies, I'm going to laugh like JK Simmons from Spiderman and mention The Prince of Egypt, The Lord of the Rings, Breakthrough, The Eyes of Tammy Faye; heck, I'll mention Heretic-yes, it's a Mormon movie, but it does something that really smashes the aforementioned argument that Christian movies don't stand a chance in Hollywood: THEY MADE AN ATHEIST A BAD GUY.
I felt the same way! Hollywood-some aren’t like that-wants to continue to make generic stuff, that’s giving us Christians an easy opportunity to stand out and bring art into the entertainment industry. By the way, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever was listed on Collider as one of the top ten best family movies in 2024.
What are some ways you think we could improve Christian art today? I was interviewed! Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/JAWn-byiCmw/видео.html
gate zero interests me for this reason
Jesus made people mad with His storytelling all the time! The student is not above the Master. If we aim to tell stories that change lives, we have to be willing to accept the same stakes that He did.
Ironically, the two biggest fantasy franchises in history - Middle-Earth and Narnia - were written by Christian writers. How could two guys get it so write nearly a hundred years ago, only for modern writers to get things so wrong? As far as your point on stakes, the key to stakes isn't the scale of them, but how much they matter to the protagonist. If the world is ending and your protagonist feels fine, the stakes are pretty low. But say your protagonist's dog is dying, your protagonist has no family or friends, that dog is their only connection to another living thing, and he has to save that pup or he'll just crack under the strain of his loneliness (kind of like John Wick) - then suddenly the stakes are pretty high, despite the issue being rather small from our detached perspective.
I want to see a film of Archangel Micheal as a knight fighting Lucifer as a Dragon, kinda like a medieval style good vs evil action film
A God-of-War-style video game where you play Michael slaughtering waves of demons. Lucifer is only a tutorial boss, reflecting how pointless he is in reality.
We don't even have Christian Noir, and the whole point of that genre is the exploration sonful humanity. The perfect genre for Christianity!
Of course God has taste. I mean look at nature.
@@Connor.Kelly_ yeah! Eden was also a beautiful place. The Millennial Kingdom has gorgeous details. Solomon is gushing over one of his wives' beauty in Song of Solomon. I think even the Ark of the Convenant was vividly described.
Yes! That's a good point!
I think that the christian canon (not in a fictional way but in a historical way) and the desperate need to convert people is something that drags the quality down, I'm not saying that there is a need for rewrite something, but to treat the movie as a parable, a message that need to be passed like Jesus used to do, like Bruce all mighty is a good history about how to be more human in the eyes of god without being pedantic nor sacrificing good story telling.
Tell a good story that teaches on the positive messages of religion but avoids political statements and stays away from trying to hard to convince the audience of the validity of their religion rather than telling a compelling story.
I geniunely can’t think of any movies but I’ve got yall covered on shows. Lost, and The Leftovers. Both written by Damon Lindlelof. Of course, they’re more critiques on religion than preaching it, but that only makes the parts where they do preach it even better. Acknowledges both the good and the bad.
actually being good
A good Christian film I believe is one that (1) is able to tell a compelling story no matter the genre and (2) have a biblical application to its theme and story. I see that the best Christian films are based on stories of Christians in history (ex. Hacksaw Ridge, Sound of Freedom, Bonhoeffer) or the story of Jesus or any biblical figure (ex. The Passion of Christ, The Chosen, The Ten Commandments, etc.) However, in recent years, I haven't been able to see a lot of good Christian fiction stories: films that use Christianity as an allegory (ex. The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia). It's these kinds of films that intrigue me the most, as they're able to tell larger-than-life stories. They disguise Christianity or God as something that exists in their world. One good Christian films that does this almost perfectly is The Shift, a sci-fi multiverse film that takes inspiration from the book of Job. Its characters parallel biblical figures: the main protagonist, Kevin, represents Job; the main antagonist, the Benefactor, represents Satan; and the 'shifters' represent demons. God and Christianity still blatantly exist in the world, but I'd say in the way The Shift was told, there wasn't any easy way to create entities that parallel them. Anyway, I do think creative fictional Christian stories should be discovered. C. S. Lewis had made another novel series (Out of the Silent Planet, Peralandra, and That Hideous Strength) that is also a Christian allegory that would be VERY difficult to be turned into a movie series.
Well written Christian movies can be rated: G, PG, PG-13, and R. Your Christian story doesn't even have to mention God or Jesus. Look at Song of Solomon and The Book of Esther. Neither book explicitly mentions. I see it as long as you mention that your characters are Christians and make. Sure, your intention is to make it Christian, then it's ok. Also, we need to explore different themes. How many Christian movies do you know constantly doubt their salvation? My guess: none. What about spousal abuse in Christian marriages by Christian spouses? P3dophilia in churches? What about Christian Sci-Fi Drama about a Christian AI Robotics who constructs an AI robot that resembles his sister who died in a car accident but is using it as a way to not let her go, to pretend she never died.
You really look exactly like hooliganchristian and sound alike
I’m afraid I’m not able to keep listening; I’m sure you’re going to say something well thought out, but the unscripted poetry jam of a plot summary has me checking out at 10:13 Was the point “you’re not going to convince anyone with terrible art”? I wholeheartedly agree. Hopefully the goodly folk can learn this, rather than going the commies vs Albert Maltz route.
Its not the message thats the issue, every film needs themes to give it value otherwise its just brainrot. The issue is they dont want to execute why the message/theme of the movie is of any value. Its like writing a thesis. You have to explain why your statement is right or at least why it should be considered. And not to throw shade towards these directors but it seems like alot of them dont really care as in not wanting to make a masterpiece out of the idea that since its a "christain" film its just gonna attract christains and rely on relability which isnt the priority. Its like going to church and hear the preacher share something you already accept as truth without them thinking for themselves why the stuff they hear should/ shouldnt be respected. What would be the point of it?
This is why I enjoy and respect movies with a Christian moral or filled with Biblical themes like Hawksaw Ridge, Prince of Egypt, Faith and Heroes(a show for kids), Superbook, Veggietales, The Passion of Christ, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia and A Whisper in Time. They’re all good stories for they’re own audiences and respect them
so real on the no weight in these movies
I'm so sick of some the things some Christians say to defend these terrible movies with "Christ is still being preached" and "it's something good" or when they use it as a way to attack other Christians or none believers who genuinely hate them. I read a blurb from a person who praised a Christian movie that I despise called A Matter of Faith. And do you know what that wrote in that blurb? "Whoever doesn't like this movie is either an atheist or a carnal Christian." Really appreciate being called lukewarm! 😂😂😂
I’m glad RUclips recommended me this video because, a lot of your points I’ve brought up to my friends about media in general is the fact that 1. Something isn’t going to benefit you if the ideas and characters aren’t founded or reflecting truth. 2. Everything out of the world is going to be of the world, there is no light in it, now this isn’t to say that we can’t gain from these things but it’s also a fact that these can’t be wholly beneficial. One thing I’ve come to understand about my dislike of the two what I like to call “separation settings” in stories is 1. In fantasy you 99% of the time have a world divorced of the true God, and 2. Sci-fi are worlds that 85% of the time are devoid of the true God. It makes consuming this content detrimental, while not sin, it is detrimental, and is what can be seen as good, good enough for the rest of it to be okay to consume? To willingly open myself up to something that attacks and dishonors both my relationships and God himself? Just some stuff I’ve come to understand.
I agree, it's always sad to see anyone built up at the expense of someone else. But what modern film makers, and story writers in general, have fallen back on it the current fad of men must be stupid and incompetent in order to make our female lead look strong, smart and brave. (Oh, and we also need to tell you directly in the dialog, multiple times, that she's a force to be reckoned with, because we're being SO very subtle) But this only serves to prove that this female, whom they supposedly want us to believe is awesome, is really just average at best. And can only thrive and be revered in a society of "lesser" beings.
Exactly. Audiences hate bad writing, not strong women.
@RyderTheOmniscient Wow, thanks I honestly didn't expect to receive any response. Keep up the good work 👍 It's good to see people using their talents!
The Bible can be criticize on a simple moralistic basis. The god portrayed in the Bible is a freaking psychopath.! Petty jealous,, immoral, angry, petulant, and prone to genocidal temper tantrums! He condones and promotes the most horrific treatment of his creations. Murder slavery war.,… And this God is so incompetent he can’t make his wishes known to his creations in a consistent, verifiable fashion, so as to cause them to slaughter one another over his vague inconsistencies!!! If this deity was in fact real? Upon meeting him, I would spit in his eye.
I’m always like, this isn’t politics, this is about humauty
