I'm like many people of my generation (Gen X) - rode a bike as a kid, but as a "rite of passage" became car dependent. That all changed a decade ago when I realised what a waste of time and money it was having a second car just to drive to the train station to get to work in Brisbane CBD. So I bought a bicycle and starting riding to work.

Long time no see! I'm back with another tier list video, this time from Brisbane CBD to the Airport and back again via Hamilton North Shore. I've tweaked the criteria for the tier list just slightly.

Are arbitrary speed limits the right way to manage speed on active transport paths?
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Last year cyclists copped fines over $400 for exceeding a ridiculously low 10km/hr speed limit on the Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane. After a public campaign partly stirred by yours truly, the Queensland Government conducted a review and have raised the speed limit on the bridge to 20km/hr. But it raised the question - are speed limits even necessary on active transport paths? Should we enforce spe...
Upgrading bikeways with road projects - is it a balanced trade off?

The Centenary Motorway is one of Brisbane's busiest urban motorways. It is undergoing significant "upgrades" over the next few years, starting with the Centenary Bridge Duplication. Alongside the motorway is the Centenary Cycleway, also one of Brisbane's busiest trunk cycleways, carrying thousands of cyclists per day along its length. It's used by commuters, recreational riders and local active...

$54 million waste of money? The Indooroopilly Bikeway saga | COME RIDE WITH CHRIS!
It's funny that we have some of the higher speed limits in urban areas with many different road users around but the lowest on motorways between cities.
Indeed. I'd be fine with them putting speed limits up to 130 on motorways if they dropped default urban limits to 30... at least then people are just killing themselves on motorways, not running over people walking and cycling in local streets.
I wish I met you when I visited and did road cycling there.my confidence is at level 0.5 around cars and angry drivers
Next time you're in town let me know, happy to show you around. A shame you need a personal guide to enjoy Brisbane by Bike safely, but in working on it (as are many others)
I have a full-proof method too: I only ride at night 😂. Otherwise there's no way I would risk those murderous little turds! Nice video, thanks mate.
Not a bad tactic - although then you're dealing with the bizarre nature of driver night blindness ;-)
@@ChrisCoxCycling I'm lucky to have many paths nearby and use footpaths. I'm a bit of a meanderer, though, not a commuter.
Another great video. Thanks. On a side note, have you seen this - ruclips.net/video/P4hM1DLrhD8/видео.htmlsi=cqLm6jnwsTC9Rh7E. Absolutely insane to blame the rider.
Sky News Australia. Pay it no attention - it's the Australian equivalent of GB News.
Yeah I rode through Howard Smith wharves on a Saturday night it probably would have been faster to walk
Yeah, really frustrating how Brisbane City Council has let the New Farm Riverwalk essentially become an obsolete piece of high quality transport infrastructure.
Great follow-up video Chris! You nailed the issues with the lack of links from Airport to Hamilton. I've started using the route around the race course as an alternative to Kingsford Smith Drive, but its not great either. It's a shame Brisbane City Council are just ignore feedback on where bicycle riders want to ride, and then bleat on about how much money they are spending on active transport. Through New Farm, you just can't use the share path if there are two or more riding together, you just get caught waiting and dodging walkers. After the sh!t show of Howard Smith Wharves, I cut through the city and follow Eagle St all the way to Creek St, turn right then left onto the Elizabeth St bike path, that works well for me and I don't need to go down the wrong way on the road 😁 When I get to the top of Elizabeth St at William St, I just ignore those lights and cross with care - the cycle on those lights is beyond a joke 🤬. Thanks again for this great resource!
Fantastic video Chris. Well done. I obviously enjoyed your review of the NBB from Bowen Hills to Wooloowin 😂😉 I recently landed at Copenhagen airport from Manchester. Travelling light with a backpack, it was such a joy to jump on a hired e-bike and ride on separated facilities directly from the airport to central CPH. We also have that opportunity in BNE. We all just need to keep working on it. Cheers.
7:20 wow I had no idea that path was bikes only. 10:06 "[the state government] clearly had a vision of a consistent separated cycleway with priority crossings"...except for when McDonald Rd crosses Blackmore St and again when you have to cross McDonald Rd at its intersection with Albion Rd, for some reason. Hopefully once that townhouse development near the train station is finished, there'll be some more tree cover at that section. (edit: ok glad to see you acknowledged those problems just a little later. I initially thought you had already moved past that section) One of my regular sport cycling routes goes to the airport. The section you're on at 14:40, we usually take the road on the way out (the nice wide shoulders aren't classed as bike lanes, but would be some of the best non-separated bike lanes available if they were), but we go back the same way, which requires being on that footpath. It's crazy how narrow it is. It's barely even suitable for pedestrians, let alone cyclists. The road shoulder there is so unnecessarily wide they can and should just reduce that to make the width of the separated path adequate. It's also appalling for connectivity. To get onto that footpath from the DFO (via the road that Google calls "The Cct" but Strava seems to call "The Blvd", I dunno which is right) requires traversing the roundabout with traffic (thankfully usually pretty quiet of a weekend) and then making an extremely tight >90 degree turn from the zebra crossing. There is _no_ way to cross from the northern leg of the Cct to the footpath over the bridge. It's astonishing how many Beam devices we still see around _months_ after they were told to get out of the city. I sure hope they're being fined by the day. (I doubt it...) I don't know why you would say your opinion on HSW and the CityLink connection is controversial. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything positive about that. I wouldn't change the score by more than 1 at most, but I do think you were overly generous about the CityLink Cycleway itself in your verbal description. The terrible intersections were noted, but not the poor narrow and bumpy design of it, which significantly detracts from comfort while using it.
I'm reliably informed all Beam devices will be gone by Christmas. Ipswich having them removed by November 22.
I’d be scared to go on some of those on my motorbike. Imagine how light terrorist traffic would be if it was safe to cycle anywhere instead of nowhere. But as long as vegetables control development and infrastructure, vegetables run architecture businesses and vegetables vote for the same two demonic political parties why would things change ? Look at Britains narrow streets, they are like that cause they were developed a thousand years ago before cars n trucks, imbeciles here in Queensland make housing estates tiny for profit with the result cars line both sides of narrow streets . If you take a look at Yatala today once a bush hick town now four lanes of motorway trucks empty into its two lane roundabouts and it is murderous congestion all day because the imbeciles allow vast industry to develop in two shoe boxes and two alleyways masquerading as highways. Don’t expect brainless govt Harlots in suits to get bike traffic fixed.
Great video! Genuinely curious if you have suggestions for what locals can do to improve cycling infrastructure in brisbane (other than voting)?
Thanks! The best thing you can do is make it a topic of conversation. Talk to friends and neighbours, talk to your local councillor and state MP when they're out and about. The more that reps hear people talking about it, the more likely they will do something. If you have a local bicycle user group, consider reaching out to them. They might have local actions and campaigns they are working on.
Hey I’m new to Queensland, make the videos longer! I’d be happy watching you stop and feed the birds.
Hey Chris, good to see you back!
I really love the riverwalk through new farm but yeah it is a complete nightmare by bike. Luckily the roads through new farm are pretty cycle friendly (at least in my experience). Really good video - as someone who regularly commutes in peak hour on stage 5 I can confirm its not good - I find it a bit easier to go right at the roundabout and avoid turning right at those lights or going straight and connecting onto the bikeway through kalinga park on shaw road. Good video and I agree with all of your ratings.
great video as usual! run for BCC!
Another excellent and very informative video by Cox Productions.
Great video Chris. Totally agree that Howard Smith Wharves is a death trap. Sharp bumps, cars and drunk pedestrians. It's a total disaster and the council should be ashamed of this. I'd literally much just prefer to ride along the road. The amount of times I've nearly been taken out riding slowly through here is just crazy.
Most of the established off-street infrastructure was laid down in the 1970s and hasn't been improved much since, save sporadic maintenance or resurfacing. New suburbs, mostly found on the periphery, tend to have better and more comprehensive bike paths but for the most part you have to share narrow footpaths with pedestrians. This can work, but only if they upgrade most paths to at least 3m - normal footpaths are only half that by default. There is plenty of space available everywhere to put in new paths - either taken from the road width, or the setback. There really isn't any good excuses left not to.
higarn. cycling is allowed on footpaths, this is so the government can avoid having to invest in Actual bike infrastructure and street safety in established suburbs.
Yep, same mentality here in Brisbane.
Ranger danger
It is important for cyclists to understand that the vehicle in this video is not a truck it is a car.
Nice to see someone who takes the small roundabouts like I do. As for the truck driver - no surprise there. When your vehicles are being called stupid names like Ranger and Barbarian, one is bound to think that they own the road.
That is a car, you could call it a Ute, it is not a truck. Venture out past your street one day and you’ll see them, they’re 10 to 15 foot high and 20 to 80 feet long.
Hes just angry he cant get any cardio in
Old mate driver probably thinks he is the hero
Get out of people's way if you're going slow AF
It was dangerous... but not for you. Anyone who could've been using that adjacent pathway in that section would be in risk.
Your cat purring in your microphone sounds serious😊
You are responsible for your own safety.
So why do we have road rules?
Just because they put a little bike painted on the side of the road doesn’t mean people can’t park stuff there too😂 could use the footpath and go onto the grsss for pedestrians
Or maybe people could think about the obstructions they cause by leaving their private property lying around?
Why am i not surprised by this? 😂
😂😂 your content is so on point
Nice setup Chris. But still not going to vote Labor. That would be crazy.
Mates don't let mates vote LNP
He says while not wearing the legally required helmet. How someone can be so slow is amazing.
@@scottthomson7201 It's a helmet with an added brim. Nothing illegal there.
Scott, Scott, Scott. As Andrew points out, I'm wearing a helmet with a brim on it. And even if I wasn't, does that make it OK to block the shoulder on a cycle route? Your last sentence is very fitting - indeed, how CAN someone be so slow? You should donate your brain to science so we can answer that question.
@@ChrisCoxCycling ok a helmet with a brim. Great. But yes.. if you weren't it would indicate how little YOU actually care about health, making your argument pointless
@scottthomson7201 so unless someone is wearing a foam hat they aren't entitled to having unblocked bike lanes? Did you get dropped on your head when you were a baby or what?
@@scottthomson7201what the?
No one cares about cyclists.
The LNP?? Shocking
I know right... so unlike them to not think about other people
If you had worked harder and saved better you could afford to drive a car. Like a grown-up.
You don't think I own a car? I'm just not a dipshit who drives when it's not necessary.
So because you cannot pedal the speed limit he is a dumbass?
Of course it is batshit crazy riding a motorbike at that speed is getting to the point the will not stay up ( and a motorbike is different to riding a pushbike ) next your will want it 20kph it is a road for MOTOR VEHICLE not push bikes 9 that is what foot paths and bike lanes are for ) . having so many speed limits is causing crashes because people are always checking the speedo and not the road at time 3:30 another cyclist riding in the middle of the road and not keeping to the left as per the road rules.....
Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong.
@@ChrisCoxCycling why would that be , do tell oh wise one.
@@michaelwaters6184 1. If you can't maintain balance on a motorbike at 20-30kph, you probably need more motorbike lessons. 2. The statistical curve of speed vs impact risk for pedestrians is almost flat from 0 to 30kph. Above 30kph it rises sharply. There is no benefit in lowering the speed limit to 20kph, so no, nobody will be asking to lower it further. 3. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest crashes are caused by people "checking their speedo". That's absolute rubbish. And if you're constantly having to check your speedo to ensure you're driving at the appropriate speed, refer to my response to point 1. 4. There's no rule that requires cyclists to ride as far left as possible. I refer you to my video busting such myths here: ruclips.net/video/wtiUMyoeTQQ/видео.htmlsi=XPkap8lS2uHSjDD8&t=288 Happy to educate you, young padawan.
People think bikes are for kids untill they can drive I ride25 miles a day
I'll be honest, this one doesn't bother me. It wasn't a close pass (at least, on camera it doesn't appear to be-happy to be corrected), they didn't cut across you, and neither road user had to do anything sudden or unsafe to react to the other's actions. Was it _necessary?_ No. But it was fine. Unless the camera is _very_ deceptive about the distance.
Distance was fine. Driver had one hand on the wheel, anger turned onto the wrong side of the street. Pointless overtake and lazy driving.
Its always a worry when someone shows so little patience. Car drivers like this are oblivious to their responsibility to keep others safe.
Predictably, idiots are in the comments already missing the point. Why bother overtaking someone when you're about to turn?
A lot of people get to 40 or 50 and are cooked from 20-30 years of drug, grog, medication and generally poor lifestyle. I'd be surprised if any of them made good decisions while driving a car. Thankfully these muppets aren't the majority.
You're riding down the middle of the partly shaded road, with no helmet and dark clothing...
It's broad daylight, and I am wearing a helmet. Aside from that, what's your point?
He's riding to the left side of the road, with a helmet, and what's the shade of his clothes matter? Why are you so thick?
Fashion police? hope you wear hi vis when you cross the road.
@ChrisCoxCycling My point is there are 2 idiots in that video. You are also an idiot for putting yourself in harms way without reducing your risk in anyway.. then you are calling someone else an idiot for not reducing the risk for you.
@@mickobrien3371 I was not putting myself in harm's way. I was riding in a sensible, legal, safe position on the road. You're right though, there are 2 idiots - the driver, and you. Go get remedial driving lessons, pal.
Yep picked the perfect song to describe you
Right on schedule, an upset car brain. Thanks for watching 😘
@@ChrisCoxCycling you’re a cyclist hogging up the road like a smooth brained retard and getting upset over cars overtaking you. You deserve to get clowned on just like every other useless cyclist on the road
Should be 30 km/h in streets to allow for those that ignore the signs, they know if they’re doing 60 it’s double the speed limit and loss of licence.
