Are arbitrary speed limits the right way to manage speed on active transport paths?
Last year cyclists copped fines over $400 for exceeding a ridiculously low 10km/hr speed limit on the Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane. After a public campaign partly stirred by yours truly, the Queensland Government conducted a review and have raised the speed limit on the bridge to 20km/hr.
But it raised the question - are speed limits even necessary on active transport paths? Should we enforce speed on bicycles and e-scooters the same way as we do motor vehicles? Or do we need to pay more attention to the very different weight and kinetic energy characteristics of the relative vehicles?
CORRECTION: In the video I said at 40kph there was a 60% chance of a pedestrian dying in a crash with a car....

Upgrading bikeways with road projects - is it a balanced trade off?
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.5 месяцев назад
The Centenary Motorway is one of Brisbane's busiest urban motorways. It is undergoing significant "upgrades" over the next few years, starting with the Centenary Bridge Duplication. Alongside the motorway is the Centenary Cycleway, also one of Brisbane's busiest trunk cycleways, carrying thousands of cyclists per day along its length. It's used by commuters, recreational riders and local active...

Why do some cyclists ride on the road when there's a bikeway?

I was riding home from the shops yesterday and I had to use the road. A passenger in a van seemed upset that I was not on the bikeway alongside the road. How did it come to this? I got FLASHED at while cycling!

Don't worry, it's all safe for work - did you know there's a couple of intersections in Brisbane that have flashing amber left arrows to warn motorists of their obligation to give way to pedestrians and cyclists going straight across on their left? I had a look at them to see how they work - and despite the fact some drivers seem to ignore what traffic lights and signs tell them they need to do...

@@grahambonner508 Why would a person come off at all, let alone hit their head? The most common trauma injury from a fall from a bicycle is hand and wrist, then forearm, then collarbone, and it's the same when pedestrians fall (falling from their shoes?). Head trauma is next, and these injuries are the same for pedestrians, yet there isn't any desperation for pedestrians to wear a helmet. Why is that? Then there's the head injuries from inside cars...

@@petergibson7287General Pros and cons of helmets is more complex than first appears, depending to a large extent on how and where one rides, I'm not going to debate that with you. The point of my reply was to perhaps cause you to think about the logic in your comment, i.e. helmets are not intended for "most of the time" just those hopefully very rare times when a rider hits their head on a hard surface/object.

In India there is a social stigma about cycling if you make good money it may sound weard but it is true I am not a cycle tech junkie i use it generally for short commutes For me it is generally like if the distance is under 500 meters I will walk it it is under 8 km I will cycle and anything above that I will use my motorcycle. My friends and people of my social circle make fun of me for using cycle for running my daily errands like grocery shopping and getting stuff done locally They are like you earn good money why don't you get a car? will you keep cycling all your life like kids ? I honestly don't travell distance of more than 10 km most of the days as I live in an urban town setup and everything is easy accessible within short distances thus i believe purchasing a car is an impractical decision. I am generally mocked and made fun because of my thought process as most people believe buying a car is an important indicator of success. Glad I found this channel There is still hope for logic and humanity.

Good video. In Ireland when i'm on bike paths and there's no one around I'll happily cruise at 40kph+, which is easy to do in a velomobile. I love travelling at those speed sorts of speed. But if there's people about sharing the space, I'm slowing down and passing them carefully with a friendly hello and if there's small kids on bikes in the mix I'm slowing right down. They're generally thrilled to see a velomobile passing by anyway. Car free places should always be safe friendly places. I really hate the "fast and the furious" macho road culture perpetuated by certain drivers on the roads in Ireland, so I'll never allow myself to bring any of that same macho culture into places that should be people friendly.

Perhaps the level of traffic stress should be the other way round. A high score for low stress and a low score for high stress? That way a low stress bikeway gets a higher score than a high stress one.

Town planning is the hardest course in the world. No one has passed it yet. As an avid rider myself. If you ride on the road you are a fool. Get off road infrastructure that was designed in the 70s and expect to be safe. Riders like you give us all a bad name. I cycle 20 km a day and NEVER get on a road. North Brisbane. I can ride from Bracken Ridge to Redcliffe and back some 43 km without touching a road. Yet I see fools like you riding on the road with a bike path 2 metres away on Telegraph Rd. Over entitlement is a fool’s folly. Let me guess. You vote Labor or Greens.

you’re a grown adult acting like a kid who spat the dummy by repeating the same phrases “cope”. Firstly cyclists are often nothing more then self absorbed narcissists. Except for the “means of getting around/used to loose weight” those who treat it as a lifestyle and flaunt it as such aren’t heros or something even worth remarking on. Bikes on the road are a major safety concern especially when clueless cyclists exceed the 1-1.5 meters leniency they are given when sharing a roadway. Yet most of your groups break that rule. Secondly it’s not motorised, their aren’t insurances, licences and registration to do it. But impeding motorists by being a pest on a road way doesn’t make you brave it makes you despised and an example of what’s wrong with cyclists. I like to ride myself but I’d never do anything that harms myself or others.

Registration doesn't pay for all the new roads, like the $300m Centenary Bridge, $1bn Coomera Connector, or the $1bn+ "upgrades" on the M1. Why are they necessary anyway? What's wrong with the existing roads we have? Maybe if drivers paid the actual $7 billion a year Queensland spends on roads? That's about $5,000 each per year. Honestly mate...
