The City - Play Demo

A recording of a play session of the board game that I designed called The City. The game plays 2-6. Its a competitive game of fantasy politics in a fantasy city. The version of the game depicted on the video has changed significantly since filming but it gives a good idea of what the game is about and how it is played. Special thanks to Jonty Acton for filming.

    Nice! Loved the rolling and how you captured the spirit of character generation. Had me cracking up at all of your comments back and forth. Nothing like good pals playing together!

    T'was a nice, initial breakdown of character evolution comparison between the editions. I've some other thoughts but may wait to see the next video(s) before I comment too in depth or too soon here. I will just say how gracious you were and I felt that you handled this topic as if cogency were one of your feats. Perhaps you've once advanced a paladin, or rose as a high level cleric, my friend! CHR+. However, and at the risk of sounding impolite, I'll only say that I'm no fan of 4th ed. but may get into that later. Looking forward!

    Rob, thank you so much for you cogent and articulate commentary on D&D 5e. At 47 years of age, I was young and struggled with 1e as did all my peers in 1980. I appreciate your experience and working knowledge of the early e's. It grounds, for me, in reality and real time, your assessments as being valuable. I am troubled by ubiquitous praise and the extolling of "choice" in 5e when all I hear already existed in 1e. I fear there is LESS "choice" in recent additions including 5e. I see the mollycoddling and a general mirroring of our society in a game system that is marketed as making everything "easier." I am appalled by this "Eldritch Knight" power. Come on now! A fighter with spells at 3rd level! I'm not fooled. Your observation about "geography" is right on treble twenty. Your experience with 4e vindicates what I've been arguing with my friends who are eager to try 5e. I will join and will not spoil fun, but I'm reluctant. I'm teaching my 8 year old 1e first, so that he can make informed choices - true choices -0 when he inevitably encounters peers who will know only 5e. He'll take it or leave it come the time. I hope he passes on 1e to the current generation. I can go on, but I'll rest with encouraging you to continue posting commentary on D&D. Well done. Top marks.

    Thank you for your observations and thoughtful opinions. I admire WOTC for finally developing a game that works with so many different players, styles, characters and worlds. BTW my friend heard this video playing and asked if Jango Fett was talking about D&D :)

      +Troy Cook Jango Fett!!!!!!???? He's a damn kiwi. I'm South African. I suppose I can understand the accents may sound similar. By the way, since I made the video I have become thoroughly converted to D&D 5e. I think its a brilliant system, that brings to the front the priorities of the rpg experience.

      +Rob Acton I'll definitely let him know. I'm continually impressed with the system as I read the PHB transcript. That's my next RPG purchase. Are you planning on reviewing the DMG and the MM?

    • @Torqradio
      @Torqradio 9 лет назад

      +Troy Cook I own the DMG but I don't have a MM. I would prefer to give my ongoing views of the system as we play it. Its been more than a year now and I have played in and run a regular 5e game. I think I am in a much better position to comment, and to mention how the DMG has affected how we play.

    I really enjoyed this! I agree that things are maybe a bit vanilla for veteran players... but I'ts a great place for people new to the hobby. And it's a great place to start an addition because there's plenty of room to expand. As for the nerfing of utility spells... I actually really like that they've taken a light hand with some of them. It allows a lot of creative freedom for the DM and players that isn't all crunch and rules calculations. I think spells, particularly enchantments as per your example, should feel like you are manipulating someone not just afflicting x number of targets with y status effect and push/pull/sliding them z squares. I played a wizard specializing in enchantment in 4e that was recently converted to 5e and the difference is remarkable. the 4e wizard was so detached and the powers just seemed so impersonal and mechanical whereas the 5e wizard feels more like he's directly affecting the hearts and minds of his victims do to the wording and flavor of the spells. That's worth a lot in my book.

    I honestly can't play this game with the default resting rules, hit dice, and non-magical healing powers like second wind. The healing rules create serious problems for my playstyle. In this system a character can take a walk through a pool of acid and then instantly ignore all his wounds. It means divine healing magic is no longer required, which is not something I want for my game. In my game divine magic is not simply a divine refreshment. Clerics can and do walk into a hospital and heal real physical wounds. The problem isn't that 5e it's not deadly enough, it's that events can now occur that force everyone to suspend their imagination. When damage can be instantly recovered the DM is prevented from narrating an attack that causes a life threatening injury. These mechanics make hit points less abstract, because they prevent the DM from describing a real physical wound when he desires. Not all wounds need be physical, but the DM should have the freedom to describe damage as a physical wound when it makes sense. My only hope is that the DMG will provide alternate healing rules.

    Personally I don't have a problem with concentration as a mechanic in 5E, but I think that its a limiting factor and spell casters should have the option to incrementally tear down those limits, at great risk to themselves, but with the possibility of a big pay-off.

    5E is probably the best edition so far, except for the spell system. And while a more flavorful spell system would be interesting, I'm not sure the spell system can handle the burden at present. The concentration mechanic has already made the vast majority of spells mutually exclusive. I guess one could throw fire, ice, and lightning balls since they are instantaneous and don't break concentration. Then again, I can do that in any game. One of the things that made D&D neat was the spell system. One can't even buff and use controlling effects simultaneously (Mirror Image, Mage Armor, and Fire Shield are the exceptions). The wizard is a controller no more, or he's a defenseless one with only minimum capacity to control the battlefield. It's even worse for fighter mages and melee clerics. It's a shame really.

    I agree wholeheartedly on your view of the D&D spell system. I have heard opposing views that go something like this: "I DO NOT want there to be some kind of risk when I have to cast a spell or I will be too concerned to even cast them.". Where I perceive dangerous fun they perceive debilitating anxiety. I don't fully understand this view myself but I can respect it, especially if it takes away their fun. Great review. Keep them coming. Greetings from Canada.

    Long rests recover half your hit dice, not all your hit dice. And you can only use the hit dice you have left to heal for a short rest. If you are a 4th level fighter and use 2 hit dice to heal with a short rest after a battle you only have 2 hit dice left to use for another short rest after the next battle if it takes place the same day (or prior to a long rest). I haven't played this version myself yet but from the videos I've watched it seems that combat itself is more lethal with 5th edition. Saying that I do agree with you that the fear of death is greatly diminished. Even with the increased lethality of combat, if you do survive the day you and manage a long rest you are pretty much ready to fight at full strength the next day. I don't like this at all. I hope the Dungeon Master's Guide introduces some more realistic options for healing. If not I will have probably introduce some house rules, which I would hate to do. A bad trick I'll use if I find players are starting to get too cocky is to make sure they never get a long rest: I'll always interrupt with an encounter of some kind no matter how minor. Since a long rest must not be interrupted to benefit from it this seems only fitting. One person's house rule I read about for healing uses 1 hit point per day recovery multiplied by the character's level. I might adopt this but not until I've played/dm'ed a few games to see how the rules as they stand work out.

    • @Torqradio
      @Torqradio 10 лет назад

      I read a review that someone wrote that referred to recovering half your hit dice. I thought that person had it wrong. When you mentioned it I checked the book and you are 100% correct. Thanks for putting me right. I think that's quite significant, and might go some way to deal with my worries about lethality. My concerns around lethality come down to this: Recent playtests and the final 5e rules make living or dying heavily dependent on game situation. if you are alone and you go to 0 hp, you are probably going to die. If you are in a party with others you are, in all likelihood, going to live. What party using the current 5e rules is not going to have the ability to heal at least 1 hp? What party is not going to have a healer's kit? If you have either of these it is very likely you will stabilise a dying ally with ease.

    I am more of an Old School Renaissance guy when it comes to fantasy games these days. I played a lot of 3rd, and 3.5 and then I never played 4th Edition. I'm curious about 5th even though there are elements that I would house rule away if I ever ran it. I think that I'm going to try to run a 5th Edition game just using the Basic PDF and the Starter Set.
