I still can’t believe they went from this to Sun and Moon, it felt like such a downgrade! 😞 I read somewhere though that the reason this happened is because the more serious version of Ash and smooth animation style of XY was extremely popular with Western audiences but it didn’t go down well with Japanese audiences. They instead preferred the over the top style animation with exaggerated expressions and slapstick comedy which is why Sun and Moon looked the way it did.
