Infra Red Optical Beacon for non line of sight path tests - Jan 2023
This beacon has been on the bench a while but now it's finally complete!
It's 10W 850nm Infra Red LED (but more like 2.5W!) plus lens should be enough for reasonable Dx over the horizon (hopefully!).
Previous tests are documented on my website:
m0dts.co.uk/?tag=OpticalDx&item=201
I hope to share results from the tests soon.

Sending 134GHz(!) Radio signal over 11km path - Better signals! - 18th March 2017

Better signals on this test, probably down to visibility being very good. Same 11km path as last time. Only change to the system was G4DDK low noise figure lna on the Rx IF instead of generic mmic, made around 3dB of improvement.

GB3NQ ATV Repeater - Analogue ATV reception from Cornwall over 500KM on 1.2GHz! -18th December 2016

On Sunday Dec 18th 2016 i managed to receive GB3NQ ATV Repeater which is located in Cornwall at a distance of 517km! Not a new UK record but personal best for an inter UK ATV signal! I also managed to access at P3 later in the day. GB3MCB was 599 from the same site so a good marker for next time :-)
PI6JOU ATV Repeater - Analogue ATV reception from the Netherlands, 500KM on 1.2GHz! - 5th June 2016
Просмотров 3028 лет назад
On the 5th June there was some high pressure over the north sea causing tropospheric ducting to happen over the surface, this ducting came inland which is rare in summer months to my location. This is the first time i have received aan ATV signal from outside the UK on any band from my home station, distance is ~500km. i was using a Zeta100 Sat receiver, 3m dish and G4DDK VLNA. The path from my...

On 8th April 2016 i decided to connect up my 146.5MHZ Digital ATV Transmitter in the van while driving home from work. Video shows the full drive home without that much breakup surprisingly. Rx was 7el Yagi and Minit...

I enjoy looking for Beacon on different bands I use it for finding out Conditions. 73s

That video was over my head lol Rob but sounds impressive
Another good video rob 73s
Wow nice setup Rob that is Ace cool. 73s Ben 2E0TKK.
I have received SSTV images from International Space Station using my radio and Robot36 app on my mobile phone. Never thought that it is possible to get SSTV signals reflected via the Moon! 73 de Jon, VU2JO
Nice job!

Very nice. You need to up your audio level on the video though.
Noted!
Amazing ! Are there any regulations in the UK about high power optical emissions ? Particularly in the invisible IR range. 73 G4EYR
I believe there are regarding air traffic etc, but my beacon is relatively low power. I imagine a lot of IR Floodlight installations for security cameras will be many times what I'm running!
Interestig to see the Dawson positioner and control unit. I used to use them for Ka/Ku band mobile equipment.
Hello from Polend
Cześć
Very nice setup Rob
Hi Rob, Nice project, a quick question, with it being InfraRed how do you tell its actually on and working, does it show up on say a mobile phone camera? What I mean is, you're about to drive out to a remote OTH site, you want to be sure that it is infact radiating before you set out. What do you use for a quick check etc? Last thing you want is a drive out only to later find out its not actually radiating any IR? Ive just ordered One of Bernies Finningley MKII units with the new higher power LED's fitted. Not IR just Red. Thanks for sharing
Hi Mark, I'm just confident that my stuff will always work when I head out to do tests...haha But no, really, the easiest way is to connect one of the receivers indoors and see if I can detect it, light reflects off everything and detecting it through the window/blinds is quite easy. The Finningley kit is nice, hope you manage some long distance optical contacts :-)
Hi Rob, Great video. Very close to my thoughts, is the unit on a rotator ? I have two of the original units (telescopes) and a good take off at 700ft. Over the horizon is the way to go!!!! G1ORP
Yes its rotatable. My path south is not great though, better to SW.
Noted you are to the south west of me! over the top of the Pennines too, interesting path!
good job
Great setup there Rob!
Thanks. This is MKII van project, the old red van was retired last year after 10 years service. I'm glad I don't have to put all that gear in my car like when I first started out!
Nice outside broadcast van Rob
I'm blown away by how well that works, how much bandwidth were you using? I assume you're using the hardware for the DATV express, I've been playing with the limeSDR mini and the DATV express software in DVB-S and DVB-S2 modes. Obviously 1.2 GHz isn't going to prop like VHF will but I'm looking to see what results I can get.
About 400KHz (333Ks) around 5W to 7/8 vertical antenna. Fortunately the drive home can be a very rural route, it does not work as well in built up areas!
I'm in the LA area and I see 3 radar signals on the SDR on 23cm. Each one comes on every 12 seconds for about a quarter second. 1246.6, 1277.3 and 1282.6, where our D-STAR repeater lives (annoying).
Can you do a video showing what your using and how it's set up or modified to work in that band?
Keep an eye out for something in the near future ;-)
M0DTS Excellent I look forward to seeing that. I've only just got up to 10Ghz and was out last weekend during the activity weekend sending analogue pictures to G4EWJ and G3UVR.
Good to hear about the ATV activity! The higher uWave/mmwave bands are a bit more difficult to acheive, surplus equipment is scarce so does take a fair bit of effort, but totally do-able.
Great stuff Rob....an antenna expert told me offset dishes would be impractical at 134ghz....too difficult to get the focal point correct. No wonder people are questioning so called 'experts'.
Good signals but what was the picture? Was it the black screen?
+glenwoofit Yes, Until they plug a camera in just a blank screen unfortunately...
+M0DTS you'd think they'd put a test card up. Good job at a getting a steady signal.
+glenwoofit I think that was planned but time ran out. Maybe the AstroPi can be used at a later date for the video source.
Any progress in feed/lna arrangement? I think this is an excellent copy of ON0EME beacon with your equipment with 2,4kHz bandwidth. 73, Felix 9A1X
Interesting. I'm looking at 1286.8 to 1288.6MHz, rotation period 6secs, main lobe and side lobe spatter. Using a TTI PSA2702 spectrum analyser and Icom R20. thanks for posting.
Definite progress Rob, well done to you and Terry de Barry G4ZCN
Great pictures Rob. Thanks for putting them up for us all to see. Peter, G3PHO
Yes it was quite ipressive, amazing how tropo removes the 'line of sight' problem! A shame it will only happen for a few hours now and again at this distance..hi Rob
hello Rob not a bad signal from Bristol to your QTH 73 Viv
