WORLD'S FIRST Festool TKS 80 CROSSCUT SLED!? - Part 1: Sliding Mechanism
PART 2: Coming soon! :)
Not as soon as I had hoped, unfortunately as I'm busy with the good weather working on my fish pond. I have the pics and clips and hopefully my son and I will assemble the video.
In the end I was not satisfied with the rails attached to the sled and inverted them, making the table fitment longer and this made the cuts more accurate and repeatable. All will be shown when we can.
Today, we detail the making of a Festool TKS 80 crosscut sled sliding mechanism. Thank you for watching. Please like, comment & subscribe!

    As owner of the sawstop, i found it very weird to use the Standard glider. There is just nothing else you can do then make something yourself. Festool is good but not great. Everything was also off 2° of 90 degree. I expect from a saw this expensive a bit more

    How did you attach the upper portion of the actuator assembly-(🎉the three layers of 18 mill plywood) to the hollow leg box?

    • @AMBuilds
      @AMBuilds 11 месяцев назад

      Hello Derek, Firstly, I trimmed the blocks down, gradually, until they were a tight knock in fit for the hollow legs. I did wonder whether I would need to put something like a Domino through the hollow leg into the block but during the construction I just used some 6mm (I think) screws with pre-drilling so that the plywood was not over stressed or the screws snapped or heads rounded over. With taking the time to trim the blocks carefully, the high level of friction plus screws seemed enough and I thought I would leave it at that. I have had 300kg of steel box section for my koi pond project on the bench and was able to raise the bench, move it within the workshop and drop it down without those blocks moving at all so I am reasonably confident that it will do for me.

  • @derekhollingsworth9604
    @derekhollingsworth9604 11 месяцев назад

    Looks very interesting. Unfortunately there just wasn’t enough information about what you are doing and why. Very hard to follow. For instance why do you need 100+ mini rollers? This is a common issue when one is very familiar with something. When explaining it to someone else you assume they know or understand things they do not. I find myself really wanting to know more. Love to see a more detailed breakdown of your project with drawings of your design.

    • @AMBuilds
      @AMBuilds 11 месяцев назад

      Hello Derek. I'm sad to hear of your disappointment. I do my videos to put ideas in circulation, as a way of thanking the You Tube folks who have inspired me with their ideas. There are no drawings, as the inner legs were built to a square size as a consequence of the plywood scrap thickness in my store. I then made the double thickness legs to size to accommodate the laminate and castors. Laminate to provide a durable running surface and the castors were the smallest height castors I could find to keep the legs as small in cross section as possible. I disregarded the supposed load of each castor as you see so many cases being dragged along with broken castors and I worked on the basis that if I put a group top and bottom, any "tall poppies" might be squeezed down until all in the group were in contact with the laminate running surface. As to how many to choose, they were cheap by the 100 and the lateral forces say when bumping my heavy bench over the threshold onto my patio to get something large through the workshop and into the garden would, in my mind, quite considerable and a collapsed leg would have been a disaster. Do please ask other questions and I'll try and answer them.

  • @ipcress20

    Excellent presentation. If this saw is ever offered in the USA, I'd be inclined to make a base such as yours, with storage for many Systainers! They're multiplying like rabbits in my shop!

    • @AMBuilds
      @AMBuilds 11 месяцев назад

      I did wonder about using the space for Systainers but having it as storage is really useful for dropping in and then using offcuts does work well. If you have a look at my bench video ruclips.net/video/2NVK7pJcMOs/видео.htmlsi=DxW4BcvlAtIt_z2E you will see the drawers were made just slightly larger than a Systainer and so contents +/- trays are in each one for the relevant tool above and the Systainers are in the attic, in case of a service need.

    I’m not sure what took me so long to finally grab a track saw ruclips.net/user/postUgkxvWxw4589nheZ_QlYwqaZpnQExQfvjV4_ Sure I have been breaking down sheets with my circular saw for years but the track saw is just so much simpler and way more accurate. No more wavy spots where you got off the mark a bit, every cut is perfect. I opted for the powertec track that many other reviewers mention as well it’s a great pair with this saw. The blade that comes with it is even pretty good. Just buy it, you won’t regret it.

    Hi again - very similar to the Simpson Strong Tie Cross Cut Connector used on sites. If you ever get around to doing these again, I would recommend trying to model it so there is a tapered dovetail so the tenon (for want of a better word) is acting as a weak wedge in the 'mortice' it will increase the forces pulling the tenon into the joint. In industry metal joints like this reverse the arrangement with the tenon part installed into the long grain of the standing part and the mortice on the end grain of the joining member. But a well executed idea and by-the-way my waste side jigs were originally modelled in Tinkercad. K.

  • @StrawbyteWorkshop

    A really interesting build for me as I've been playing around with linear actuators myself in mobile bases for my bandsaw and planer. I didn't see raising and lowering the castors when I was thinking about my situation I could only see raising the tool off the castors. Anyway, food for thought. And what a lovely bench you've got. Take care - Karl.

And thank-you for the credit on the waste side cut jigs / kerf guides. Good morning, Really enjoy your presentations, particularly your attention to detail. I am also retired and a hobbyist woodworker. Keep up your tutorials at university of You Tube and we can all hone our skills. Regards, Paul

    • @AMBuilds
      @AMBuilds Год назад

      Hello Paul and thank you your interest in my channel. I shall get the second part of the sled done at some point and in the end reversed the bearings and rail to get better accuracy, with the rail on the removeable pieces and the bearings on the sled. I bought the saw as a kit, with the saw, side table, fence, back table and sliding table. It was priced in a way that meant you got all four accessory pieces for just under the cost of three separately I had no need for the back table and sold it on and use my bench if I need an out feed. I have rarely used the sliding table although to be fair have been busy building a home extension and koi pond this past year anyway. The side table and proper fence are both a must, in my view and I use them as my default with the cart I made. Please look at that video if you haven't already. Does that help you?.

    i don't understand why you built such large housing sleeves with all those rollers versus pucking up the top and bottom of the actuator and affixing them at a point where they could extend and lift the cabinet? what am i missing? i still liked the video and am in the middle of doing something very similar with a kitchen island for my 71 yr old mother so it all made sense to me save the excessive amounts of rollers in the actuator sleeves, is it just an over engineering thing? to address possible drift? cause now you have me reconsidering all the mounting scheme'n i've been doin hehe, this kitchen island is gonna be @ 750lbs when it's done and the granite top installed, i can't have any binds or issues :)

    • @AMBuilds
      @AMBuilds Год назад

      Hello sikosis999. The most important thing here is that I'm not an engineer, just a retired vet. surgeon in a home workshop showing what I did, as is, with no guarantee of success or correctness. I do tend to take a rather Victorian attitude to construction, meaning everything ends up very very strong, just in case. When I made the bench I had another 8x4 foot bench which is now away so if my new bench fails, I'll struggle to fix it. I need my bench to be able to bump over a half inch threshold to park it on the patio if I need wide access through to my back garden and that in a heavy bench, I would image is a significant lateral load on the structure. Your 750lb island is much heavier and if things go wrong potentially life altering, if it fell on someone and I'm not sure what "pucking up the top and bottom of the actuator" means. I would be very wary of that weight, in the circumstances and probably best to get advice or at least duplicate something commercially tested and safe. Thank you for your interest in my video and good lick with your project. 😀

      @@AMBuilds excellent so i wasn't missing anything, you are a bit more of 'better safe than sorry' guy than i am :) i think i've settled on a metal H frame under the island with the casters and actuators attached directly to it, then racking that H into the bottom of the cabinet base. . . i'll get back when it's done :) i'm playing concrete monkey right now heh

      Hello Steve, I haven't made the files public because the precise spacing of the files for your printer is specific to your printer, so the templates to lighten the back may not fit your MFT that you have made, without some tweaking. More significantly on the various thickness drop ins for the rail, the position of the rail retaining piece is arrived at by experimenting with your own MFT and rail. It would be extraordinary if you happen to choose the same position as me to a fraction of a millimetre, I designed all of the pieces on TinkerCAD and they are a relatively simple (as I'm a beginner on CAD) combination of basic shapes and so any TinkerCAD user could duplicate them to suit their MFT and their rail position. Does that make sense. Kind regards Alistair

    Great Video. I appreciate you lowing the sound during cutting, many build channels dont understand that value, which makes you wonder about their understanding about wood or tools. The accuracy test was superb!

      Thank you. That was our very first video and my son was just learning about video editing. He'll be pleased to hear your comments.
