      Hi there. I am not familiar with the RTL Dongles myself, and every radio has a bit of a different process to get working with SDR Console. I touched on this in Episode 1 of the series. A good place to look or inquire though would be the "groups.io" site for SDR Console. (sdr-radio.groups.io)

    • @dxbryce
      @dxbryce 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching Jason! Meteor Scatter can be very tricky beyond the software settings. The big killer of Ms is a high noise level, it seems. If you have the ability to get an antenna out in the open, away from sources of RF noise (buildings, electronics, power lines, etc.) that really helps. A directional antenna and sensitive receiver are also important. My setup for this video is an Innovantenna 10 element FM beam and an AirSpy HF+ SDR. The antenna is about 10-15 meters from my home and pointed into unoccupied land, which helps with noise. Regarding software settings in SDR Console, check out Episode 2 in the series and Episode 5 on the Data Analyzer, if you haven't already. Good luck!

      Hi there and thanks for watching! I don't have a Facebook account but last I heard, that group was still quite active! The old bulletin board ("TV/FM Skip Log") is indeed no longer. There is a replacement for that page for WTFDA members (now a $10 one-time fee to join) called WLogger, and various Discord / Slack groups, FMList and of course social media to check out what people are logging.

    • @dxbryce
      @dxbryce 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching! There are few options for a radio that will cover 87-108. Elad S3 is the one that is somewhat affordable. File size would be quite large and there's no way to reduce the file size other than being careful of recording lengths (or trimming down files - there is a feature in Console called Data File Editor).

    I’m curious how can a radio station in Atlanta be heard all the way up to Massachusetts. Sounds extremely weird. Its current signal can’t even reach that far

    • @dxbryce
      @dxbryce 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching! You are correct, typically FM signals travel no further than ~70 miles from their home location, and ultimately out to space, never to be heard again. However, certain rare conditions in the atmosphere can interrupt their journey to space, and bounce the signal back to faraway locations. In this case, it was a meteor burning up in the atmosphere that caused the reflection. Catching these signals is called "FM DXing" and there are other conditions that cause these long-distance reception. More on the meteor situation specifically can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteor_burst_communications

    • @dxbryce
      @dxbryce 6 месяцев назад

      Hi. Thanks for watching! Under the "Broadcast FM Options" pane (which I cover in the series if you need help getting there), there is a slider called "Max size". Adjust that to the right and it will increase the RDS text size. There are limitations based on how large your screen is, so you will want to play around with maximizing / minimizing the SDR Console window as well.

    • @dxbryce
      @dxbryce 6 месяцев назад

      Hi there - apologies for being so late to respond! FM Broadcast signals are usually circularly polarized (about 90% of the time), so you can orient your antenna in either way without much effect. Most of us mount antennas horizontally which is naturally best to avoid interaction with metal masts, and generally patterns are better. Brian (K6STI) has some more information about that on his site. Good DX, and sorry again for the delayed reply.

Thanks Bryce and good luck!!!

      @dxbryce 6 месяцев назад

      Hi, I'm so sorry I never replied to this. You may have figured this out (or moved on) by now. But as far as I know, there is not a manual notch filter (for say, tuning around a strong carrier or noise) for FM in SDR Console. But you may want to browse the SDR Console documentation and "groups.io" board where they discuss some of the new features in the tool. There is an automatic notch feature/button, but I think it is designed for use in SSB mode. Good luck!

    Bryce, I went camping at Mohican this weekend, which is located between Akron & Columbus. I was in a river valley in a remote location far from any transmitters. I brought the SDR laptop and portable FM yagi. I noticed the noise floor there was at least 20 dB lower than my home location, and it was the first time I've really gotten to witness Ms live. I could sit and wait for bursts. I recorded a few, but no bursts that are anywhere near the length in this video. I ended up IDing about 14 stations in a couple hours, most with RDS. I'd really like to DX Ms here, but I don't know if it's going to be easy. I've had a few here, but it's very difficult. I may need to buy property in a rural area. Now, I'm looking at the noise floor in this video, and to my surprise, it looks higher than mine.

    • @dxbryce
      @dxbryce 2 года назад

      Very cool! The noise floor is such a big part of the equation for sure. Mine is artificially inflated here due to the interaction between gain settings for the SDRPlay hardware and SDR Console. Every notch of gain jacks up the base "noise floor" and the dB levels of signals simultaneously. On a rig without such gain settings, it would appear more quiet. I'm fortunate to have a lowish noise floor in this direction, with protected wildlife reserve land immediately adjacent to my property.
