Top Ten Medieval Clothing Must Haves
The medieval times fascinate me, particularly the 3rd crusade.
Also, you *wear* a sword. You don't wear a spear, or warhammer, or mace, or axe (usually), or halberd. The more a society/application favors displays of standing and class (eg. medieval society, modern military uniform) the more useful it is to have a dedicated weapon that is also a conspicuous item of personal adornment. It's a bit like wearing spurs in certain cultural/historical settings. They can function not only as a vital tool of a privileged class, but also as a *badge* of that class even when not in use. In the Western analogy, a sword was almost like a combination of six-shooter and tin-star, except with an aristocratic twist. Especially since, unlike in movies, most people didn't, couldn't necessarily afford to, and weren't allowed to just walk around in public with a pistol on their hip. If you saw it, it meant the person was a law man, a gunslinging desperado, or some free-ranging cowboy flouting the law and daring somebody to do something about it. They were someone, admire them or fear them, that you didn't want to mess with unless you too were of a similar cast.

I can't decide between one of these or a rondel dagger. It would absolutely be a trade-off between protection and maneuverability. Assuming I get an aunlaz that fits me with a gauntlet, is it theoretically possible to catch a blade with the pommel.
Theoretically I don't see why not.
I love Almond Milk. :)
Showing examples of each item would have been helpful.
That is a very good suggestion.
larp and reenactment are different
Correct.
I almost stabbed someone but then I got to the disclaimer in the video. Thanks for ruining all the fun 😤
🤣
REAL
💯
No pictures! Really
Fair point. If I were to do this video again with what I've learned over the past three or so years of making content, it would include pictures or examples or both.
It's not about how dumb what they say is, it's about their enthusiasm! At Pea Ridge a tourist said that my sergeant's canteen was the 7th one ever made because it had a 7 on it😂
Hah! I like that one.
My friend who does a Viking age metalworking display often gets comments like "oh they didn't have hammers back then" (somehow forgetting about the most famous symbol of the time haha) and "is that real metal?"
That's new! I've never heard they had no hammers.
Mick Foley has so many faces..
Not the first time I've heard that. Had to Google who that was last time.

This reminds me of the saying ,,You cannot not decide". Not choosing means to choose the option to not take action (eg procrastinating away the chance to apply for a job means deciding against it).
Most definitely!
It would be awesome be part of a digital conference why don't you hold one before the village is built?
A digital conference in this context is making a conference on site available online. Without venue, we cannot do digital conferences in this way, yet.
@@TheTurnipOfTerror thanks for the reply, I'm following along. Can't wait until this happens
This is amazing, good luck!
I appreciate it. Luck is only part of it. We need your pledge on Kickstarter, and spread the word to get more eyes on the project.
Sounds interesting. Do you intend to curate the flora and fauna in the village to better match a European environment? And if so, do you feel that poses any risks to the surrounding environment?
What an amazing question. I actually have a bit of information already presented on the Kickstarter info page regarding conservation and working to cultivate natural, native plantlife. However, in the town itself, such as in the messuage of each cottage, we would seek to have flora which would be more appropriate to England and Northern Europe. With the border of natural conservation land I don't anticipate a negative impact in the local environment, no worse than lawns grass. In the fields of course there will be historical crops, and we can also (since we don't need to actually feed the town) keep certain consumables on hand such as reed and thatch. I'll do a follow up video. Great question!
But what about turnip milk? 🤔
I don't think it works that way 😆
@@TheTurnipOfTerror reminds me of the story of the Great Lemon Tree in Springfield 😂
I am also pretty sure it did not have the same consistency or flavour we have today, unless they had a way of thickening it and used honey or sugar as a sweetener, which may have been cost prohibitive for the commoner. I've tried fresh soy milk. The best description is left over soy water, not much flavor, certainly not sweet and no milky consistency in the slightest. 😐 I'll just drink water, thank you. 😅
Consistency is about the same, we sweeten most of our milks in a way they likely did not. However, in other recipes, such as barley water, it is in the recipe to add sugar to the cup before drinking, instead of sweetening the entire batch, so they may have sweetened it at the moment of drinking. Depending on the time period, sugar started to become available to every strata, depending on where you are.
To emphasize the price difference, for those not in the know... The almond milk (basically any plant milk) is close to $4, but it is only for HALF a gallon. While the cows milk is $3 for a WHOLE gallon.
Good point.
Except for Hy-Vee at the moment you can get Hy-Vee brand almond milk for $2.99 for a half gallon at my local Hy-Vee.
@@bradleyhoyt3188 that's still quite the price difference, though. Your plant milk is 40 or 50 cents cheaper than what I actually get. I tried oat milk from an expensive supplier. Had to rent the bottle and all, meaning they held onto your deposit until you brought it back. Tasted like strait up dirty oat water. I could make that at home if I chose to. Returned for full refund and bottle deposit back. It looked so white too... Like milk... All LIES!!!
@@tilasole3252 no, I'm not talking about oat milk I don't like oatmilk either I tried it, almond milk however is actually quite good, and of course you have the option of sweetened and non sweetened , I occasionally get the sweetened stuff as a treat, and honestly the reason I made the switch isn't because I'm some kind of crazy liberal advocating for alternate foods, I primarily did it for medical reasons. A few years ago I was unfortunately diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and I'm the type of guy who absolutely positively loves my milk I can't get enough of milk, and when I met with the dietitian and she was talking about what's recommended for my diet, she said I could only have one glass of milk a day or at least that's the recommended serving for a diabetic, and I said that's going to drive me crazy because I absolutely love milk, and then I asked her is there any way that I could cheat a little bit so I can still have as much milk as I want, and she recommended almond milk and if you find the right brand name, some of them actually do a pretty good job. Almond breeze is pretty good, and of course like I said the Hy-Vee brand they do pretty good too, as far as what you're describing I've never experienced anything like that.... And I'm very sorry that made you pay rent for a bottle that's ridiculous... But I will tell you this, ever since I started drinking almond milk the thing about that is it's high in magnesium, and products high in magnesium have typically been associated with weight loss. I am starting to notice as well as my family.
The church also claimed water birds were fish to get around all the fasting... 😅
Don't even get me started on the weird bending-over-backward things the church did to avoid their own rules, from odd food classifications to indulgences and everything inbetween.
Almond milk is ehhh... 😐 Oat milk is blah... 🤮 Soy milk is wonderful! 😍
I could take or leave the taste of all three of them, but almond milk does serve a reenactment purpose.
@@TheTurnipOfTerror to be honest, the only soy milk I enjoy and really any plant milk, is Whole Foods Organic Unsweetened Soy Milk, which is about the only thing I buy from that store. Not that I have tried them all, but they are all more expensive and I simply have not enjoyed most that I have tried. I had to return one oat milk, because it literally tasted like oat water, with the supposed "milk" being $5 or $6 and the jar cost $5 or something to just to take it home, meaning they were loaning you the jar. I could make that at home, a lot cheaper and probably taste the same, meaning not good.
@@tilasole3252 I didn't realize they did the "borrow the jug" concept with oat milk, too. Shatto does that with cow milk.
A 501c can own property.
I believe you.
Ontop of security, there's also the potential issue with medical access. You're going to need a way to call in EMTs and handle ambulances/careflight which a proper medieval village wouldn't have to deal with there Plus worry about building codes in the first place.
Building codes are likely going to be a hurdle, which is why we've opened up talks with an historical architecture firm, who will be able to answer those questions in a way I don't have the expertise to. Medical response is definitely a concern. One of those behind the scenes notes I had was to ensure there was at least one "village green" which confirms to the 100' around best practice LZ expectations of a lifeflight helicopter. Likewise concealed med kits will be available throughout the village and there will be at least two "powered" zones where there will be concealed electricity, to include an AED.
@@TheTurnipOfTerror Considering that it's Kansas, you might also want to think about how to handle things with higher capacity shelters for storms like tornadoes. And considering the isolation, you might also want to consider finding an advisor for the medical side, and perhaps some on site medical staff
@@AzraelThanatosbasements and storm shelters are a given in this area.

Well said! One shouldn't get oneself caught in the sunk cost fallacy, when the path one goes now really just leads to problems. The challenge is finding the right point at deciding, whether one is one close to bliss or purgatory and how the current path might influence one's further future.
You make a good point. It's hard to make that decision to pivot, there's a lot of risk. But also reward!
@@TheTurnipOfTerror Well, potentially there is reward. But one might also run in a metaphorical cesspit eg by changing ones path at an unfortunate time. Or did you just mean, that, even when one does the wrong thing retrospectively, in many cases one has the chance to find happiness? Or did you maybe mean, the emotional weight one sheds by finally making hard decisions after procrastinating them for long?

I tried telling skallagrim how much his channel would benefit from him wearing period garb. I love this. Subscribed.
Thank you! If you watch some of my older stuff I kind of bounced back and forth with being in medieval clothes vs. wearing civvies. I made a commitment a while back that a medieval channel catering to reenactors and all about medieval 'stuff' deserved a medieval aesthetics the whole way through... even when that can pose barriers to producing content at the speed the pros do. This comment really validates that decision. I am glad you appreciate it, and I appreciate you.

But Gratitude to my family, friends, benevolent decision makers & mentors is also an important point. Also to myself, that I used, what I was given at least okish and didn't ruin it. Actually it was just two weeks ago, when I noticed I can be quite glad how things went, that the tendency of the development of myself seems not bad, some goals reached.
That's an excellent strategy, thank you for sharing.
The big question, considering most event take place in summer and fall, would be... What about hot weather gear
That's a good question. I may have to make a video about that specifically, as I've seen the discussion come up multiple times in forums/groups/discords.
@@TheTurnipOfTerror well it's easy to get layers of thick wooled garment for reenactment, but less so to get thin ones. For me... only the self made ones. If you dont play a peasant with a minimal number of layers, can be rather tricky.
Most people just strip to basic layers tunic, and pants or just dreses in lightweight linen. Natural fibers like linen absorb sweat and breathe. If you have light weight linen undies that helps too
@@HosCreates yes, but hard not to look like a half dressed peasant in those cases.

basically telling people to talk like politicians... no thanks some people just need to grow up not everything in life is pleasant and sometimes you just don't like the truth and that's why it hurts. If instead people were all honest and told each other things as they were and instead of always looking for blame they instead looked for solutions it would be so much easier... but alas better not hurt peoples feelings rather than have clear and open conversations.
