A little disappointed that you didn’t address the common complaints others have. They’re not small. One is that the handlebars constantly loosen and come out of alignment with the front wheel. The other is that the readout is unclear regarding charge level making one uncertain how much power is left.

FYI... I tested the original Alpha and, although it was a super smooth bike, I couldn't get past the lack of throttle. The throttle makes a huge difference on Alpha II... and now it's a real competitor in the marketplace!

I've been thinking about getting a mountain bike but am a little afraid that riding it will be too much for me. You look don't look afraid!

Are you new to mountain biking or an experienced rider?

I'm really not concerned with these issues. I've ordered an Ebike and ordered a suspension seat post and the same saddle I have on my traditional Mountain bike that I currently use for my commute. As you state, saddles are very much a personal preference and so I doubt manufacturers are going to dedicate much of their build budget to something that is likely to be replaced very quickly by the owner, especially at the more budget end of the Market. I think I'd rather the build budget goes on essential drive train and battery components so as long as the saddle is good enough to ride the bike. It has to be remembered that it's a competitive market, I doubt the margins are huge unless you are spending thousands on a bike. With "traditional" bikes I've always considered the bike as a starting point. I'm totally with you on the suspension seat post, though. Absolutely the best investment I made for my everyday commuting bike and (as I stated) I've got one before my e bike is even delivered. I have seen them supplied with some ebikes as standard and also as accessories from the supplier but, like the saddle I suspect it's a cost issue for something that's easily upgraded according to taste and budget. I'm in the UK and spent about $20 on mine. I could have spent a little less or much, much more. Where I would like to see manufacturers spend a little more is on rear gearing because time and time again, on reviews I see the issue of "Ghost peddling" because the gearing is wrong on the cassette/freewheel. That's something that requires a little more time, effort, tools and knowledge to upgrade than a seatpost or saddle.

I love my portola so much! It’s high quality, smooth and peppy. I’m female and 5’6”. I can lift it as well which is why I bought this one. I had a ride 1up lmt’d before which was also great, ride 1up has impressed me.

You can’t really criticize a bike for not having features eg throttle when it was specifically designed to not have that feature. It’s designed to be like a non-ebike.

I have to disagree with you regarding using the brakes. More than 75% of your braking power is in the front. You should learn to rely on it, including making emergency stops safely. You will be able to stop much, much faster. Use a parking lot or other location without traffic and practice. This applies to all bikes, electric or not. A lot of cyclists use the front almost exclusively, using the back mostly to control speed or hold position while stopped. Going over the bars is actually quite rare, even if you apply the brake too quickly. Most of the time going over the bars occurs when you hit an object, forcing a dead stop.

I made a huge mistake buying the 26 inch e bike called the Burchda. It weighs 85 lbs and I cannot lift it. get the lightest bike you can get thats very important. I cant even pedal this bike i got unless its in pedal assist mode 1. BIG MISTAKE!

Good comparison. You captured the major differences. Both are good choices. The only other major point I’d make is the reach is shorter on the Portola by about 2 inches. Shorter riders or riders who prefer a more upright posture will be more comfortable on the Portola. If you want an extra battery, the Portola’s lists for $375 vs the XP’s for $500 (both long range), though sometimes Lectric runs a sale on theirs. A minor point about the XP and similar XP Lite is the key must be inserted in the battery (under the frame) while riding. This concerns some people. My Mate folding ebike has a similar requirement. It’s a hassle, but one I’ve minimized by using a clip so I don’t need to dangle multiple keys from the lock cylinder while riding. You have to remember to remove it before folding it up and putting it into your car as that’s when you’re most likely to snap the key. Regarding UL certification. Lectric, or more accurately, Galaxy Bicycle, who manufactures the Lectric bikes, gets their UL testing and certification through SGS. So far, only a battery pack and the XPedition and XP Lite models have UL certification, though I’m sure it is in progress for the XP. Keep checking SGS’s web site for updates. I’ve found Ride1Up’s range estimates to be on the conservative side. I have a 2020 LMT’d and I always beat its range estimate, even after 2700 miles on its battery. I get only about half of Lectric’s range estimate on my 2023 XPedtition. It’s still acceptable as I run it with two batteries, and I use it mostly for shopping, so it’s always got its XL panniers in their expanded state and hauling cargo for about half the time I’m riding it.

Which of these awesome folding e-bikes has the best features for you?

The new XP lite with the extended battery costs the same as the Portola, a much better bike all around. i think Lectric missed the mark there. Companies are giving us batteries with more capacity and Lectric seems to be stuck in the past.

Please don't make the same mistake I made when spending your hard earned money on an e bike. When i got mine 4 yrs ago, selection was nothing like it is now. But i chose one with 36 V and a small battery. Now I cannot go on any ride longer than 25 miles w/o risking running out of juice.
