Good Man!
Well, I’d be no wiser about your trip….except that I know that coast …..all the beautiful places you just zipped through…you might as well just be cycling around a supermarket car park…..no taking a break and smelling the roses, so to speak….🤩
Hi Josephine, I make my films both as a memento and as a creative outlet. I make films for me, not an audience, you understand. I don't ask for likes or subs and don't feel I have to create for an audience or followers. Cycling is, by it's nature, zipping through somewhere, if it isn't, it's probably hiking. I have footage of the alpine flowers that I saw in the Burren limestone, I stopped and recorded in a lane in Donegal that was redolent with the antiseptic smell of meadowsweet. I washed my wands with the flowers of soapwort in Mayo. All of which you're unlikely to find in a supermarket car park - Marks and Spencer's notwithstanding. I can still smell the overpriced coffee I bought in Castlebar, the blackberries I picked to stave off pangs of hunger and the mouthwatering pizza I virtually inhaled in Buncrana. Your comment has given me the opportunity to relive my trip while having my morning coffee. For that, can I sincerely thank you. Have a wonderful day, and remember get off RUclips and get out there and smell the roses.
@ Q.E.D.😉
Great video, I really enjoyed watching it! 👍🏻 Ireland has some fantastic scenery and the best way to see it is by bicycle🚴♂️.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
Music 🔥
You're a cheeky wee skitter
Chapeau!
Merci 🎩
Maybe not the best time to go there right now due to the geopolitical situation
Agreed. Finland's increasing hawkish foreign policy is a concern. Their latest territorial claim for Liechtenstein must be resisted. I suspect Biden will see it for the sabre-rattling it is, but Trump has been strangely silent on the matter. Vaduz is a powder keg at the moment and it will take cool heads and steady hands to navigate these treacherous diplomatic waters. Worrying times, for sure.
Was the YHA at Loch Ossian closed?
No idea, it wasn't on the route I had planned but it is on the to do list (it looks like a lovely spot) - it just didn't suit for this trip though. 👍
@@thereluctantfanatic it’s on the Badger route about 35-40 miles south of the Blackburn Bothy.
Hello my dear friend. always great video and happy to watching. enjoy. see you
Thanks
Great shots! Greetings Tino
Thanks
Great video again (including "outtakes"!). One question: Where are you sitting in the canoe at 2:35 ? Greetings Tino
On the deck/handle. You need to be confident to do this and the weather needs to be calm, but that position is very comfortable.
@@thereluctantfanatic I 'll never try it! (May be at a very hot summer day - to fall into the water.) Greetings Tino
It was nice to be along for the ride virtually. The water is far too “white” for me . . Greetings Tino
It was almost too white for me.
Perfect: Leave no traces! But this video is also too short. Greetings Tino
👍
The video is too short! Is this at Rannoch Moor in the middle of nowhere in Scotland? Nice landscape! Greetings Tino
Rannoch Moor really is in the middle of nowhere.
Respect - you roll it without straps and floating gear and only for fun. Haven't seen it befor. Greetings Tino
Cheers buddy
Nice trip 😊
Thanks 👌
Hi Ciaran, quick question: how much of this trip was walking / hike a bike? Assume that most is fine to do on a gravel bike but that there are a few sections where bike was simply not doable?
Hi Paddy. In the saddle the whole time. There were some steep climbs in the Sperrins (Moydamlaght Road was fun). But most of the circuit was on country lanes, some loanins/boreen and twin track. I'm a walker, too, and know the Antrim hills and Sperrins are just too boggy to follow the official Ulster Way. I followed when I could and left it when it suited.
@@thereluctantfanaticThat’s great info. Thanks for letting me know 🙂
You missed getting from Strangford back to your original starting point. Please could you share your route? Looks like a good ride.
Here you go: Strangford - Killough - Newcastle - Tollymore - Rostrevor - Newry - Portadown 👍
Hey😊 seems you’ve chosen some lovely quiet roads. Is your trip visible on Komoot? We want to go Bikepacking Ireland in a week and still open for support insider tips😃 Cheers Tom and Stevie on Tour 😊
Hi Stevie, glad you liked it. I had a route uploaded onto my Wahoo but ditched it halfway through the first day. I often change my mind and kinda just blow with the wind. I can tell you that Google Maps never failed to direct me onto the quietest, most remote road available, and I often just used that. Hope you enjoy your trip and stay safe. 👌
Ye fairly starved on that trip! Half a notion to try some of the more off road bits later in the year.
Sure I faded away to nothin. 😁 Recommend around Beleek and the Sperrins for the off-road stuff. 👍
hello, what a beautiful adventure. I would like that too. Did you buy the canoe in Finland? Why did you choose exactly Hossa? Have you consulted any books or maps?
Hi, glad you like the film. I travelled to Hossa after reading a newspaper article about the area. I rented the canoe @ info@hossanlumo.fl and I didn't really plan it, if I'm honest. I tend to not plan more than I have to. When I'm leading a group, everything is planned. When I'm alone, I just follow my nose. 👍
@@thereluctantfanatic Ok thank you!
Can you do wild camping in Ireland? Nice trip and well filmed
Thank you. Yes, you can wild camp in Ireland. There are exceptions to every rule but like everywhere: be considerate, discreet and leave the place as you find it. Stick with that, and you'll be grand.
Great video, thanks! Was there any particular reason why you departed from the coastline section of the WAW and went cross-country from Westport - Sligo?
Glad you liked it, Caroline. Time was the only real factor. I needed to get it done in 7 days and did it in five, but I had to spend a day and a half getting to Mizen and another half day cycling from Malin Head to Derry before getting the bus home. Another factor is actually the time spent filming. Making films not only takes time but it disrupts your rhythm on the bike. But I like making films, so for me it's worth the hassle and added time.
Great trip!!! lovely motivation to move my ass from the sofa😅
This was brilliant! Do you have the route to share at all? I'd love to use it as inspiration
Glad you enjoyed. It's a wonderful trip. Much of the joy of going solo is having the freedom to do and go where you like, so while I had a route I didn't stick to it all that much. Stick as much as you can to the beautiful coastline and you'll not go too far wrong.
Model of the bike you used? Do you recommend mtb or hybrid?
Road bike, hybrid/gravel bike would be fine.
Great video, did Dublin to Galway as a student along the coast in 2010. With paniers. What was ur sleep system with the bike packing set up?
Sounds like a top trip, Ryan. Sleeping set up was pretty much what's in the film. Lightweight solo tent, down bag, bivvy and mat. Sleeping bag and mat go in the bivvy bag.
Great video! Where is the gravelly bit through the woods around min 6:20?
It's Rostrevor Forest. It's about 7KM of forest trail that's all downhill - and there's even a coffee shop (with killer jam and coconut tray bakes) at the end of the trail. ☺
Nice roll man! Best part about this has been your responses to folks who don't understand that your showing what an open canoe is capable of. Carry on!
Thanks bud. You either get it, or you don't... and lots of folks don't. 🤷
Great, excellent video👍👌👏
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. 👌
This looks very inspiring! Great to get a glimpse into the adventure, almost as though I were there
That's very kind of you to say that. Thanks.
Thought I recognized the face! 😂 Awesome Ciaran 👌Would love to do this someday. Keep it up and looking forward to seeing more.
Haha Mark! Great to hear from you. Bizarrely, I was thinking about you the other day. Hope you're doing well.
@@thereluctantfanatic All good man!. I do a bit of cycling myself. So if you're up for a wee spin sometime, give me a shout. Be good to catch up 👍
Some great shots and very evocative drone shots - currently planning my ( slightly slower) Mizmal so great to get a feel for the roads
Thanks. Slower is better. I would like to have spent more time in Killarney, the Burren and Galway. Safe journey, you'll have a ball.
Very cool
Ah, thank you very much.
Love this video, thanks
Thanks Darren.
Hate to be a stickler but 1.) it’s a semi-roll, 2.) show me how you paddle to the beach w 500 lbs of water in the boat. That all said, you did it for fun only and showed remarkable skill.
A semi-roll? Is that a sandwich without the filling? Is it a roll if you don't have a beach to paddle towards? Is "stickler" a euphemism? All important philosophical questions that I'll give due care and consideration.
@@thereluctantfanatic ….and while you ponder these really important questions, practice rolling up the other side. I see no reason why someone with your skill shouldn’t be able to quickly switch side under water. To top it off, ugh empty it, pump out all the water….just to show that it’s possible. It may even be the solution to these important questions.
Wozu wenn alles voll wasser ist ?
Es ist nur zum Spass, verstehe?
@@thereluctantfanatic ok..
I can roll back upright in any kind of conditions in my sea kayak, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't do much there except swim.
Yep, I would swim too.
Really enjoyed this Ciaran & the route looks fantastic.
Thanks for pointing me here Robbie love this. Well done ciaran class video
Ah, too kind and thanks for the encouragement.
Kind of you to say so. Thanks.
Dear Ciaran, thanks a lot for sharing, this is lovely - maybe a stupid question: did you ever had problems with dogs during your trips through ireland? Thank you
Thanks Dan. No, I can't remember seeing any dogs. I'm assuming you're asking did I get chased or bitten.
@@thereluctantfanatic thanks for that quick reply - yes that´s what I would like to know - but very good news that you can`t remember seeing any of them...I´m planning to do a long trip next year and grotesquely that´s my only concern.
Awesome 👌
Thank you for your kind words 🙏
Love it, looks like a great trip lads. Nicely shot.
Cheers bud.
Some bacpacking hai, did 330km of it at the end of the Ireland way this summer, from Co.Down myself.
Thank you. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Great film. Thanks for creating and sharing.
Thanks Gerard. Glad you enjoyed it.
Nice one ! Happy shredding 🤟 Dropped you a sub mate. looking forward to the next video.
Thanks for the encouragement.
You are in County Tyrone at that point
Let me slip into my orthopaedic shoes, so I can stand corrected.
@@thereluctantfanatic Touche! Very good lol!
legitimately the most impressive thing I've ever seen. Forget kayakers running 150ft drops, this is what separates expert paddlers from the rest. XD
Thanks Caleb, that's the first smart-arse comment I've ever had on my channel. Fair play, it made me laugh.
@@thereluctantfanatic the thing is, I was only half joking, I've tried to do this like 20 times unsuccessfully. Serious respect to you and your skills.
@@calebfoster604 Don't give up... You'll suss it out.
But it's for what? 😂🤣
How do you get the water out after to keep it from sinking?
It doesn't sink because of the floatation blocks inside the canoe at both ends and because the plastic has also a little buoyancy built into the design. You are then able to paddle to the bank to empty the boat. All that being said, the video is really just a demonstration of how you can roll a canoe without being strapped into it - which is how it is normally done.
@@thereluctantfanatic good luck paddling it to the bank in rough waters
@@T.M.... Thank you for your comment. Not everyone watching this will understand, so let me explain. This is is not a rescue technique. It's a bit of fun. It's unlikely a paddler would capsize like this, regardless of the conditions. If you want to learn how to self rescue in rough conditions, get in touch and book a coaching session. I'll even give you a mate's rate.
Drink it quickly.
Great video and trip of a life time, something I wish to do soon. Good on yeah. All the best, Johnny
Thanks and if you get a chance to do it you'll love it.
