I think it's fair to say that Dr Mike Ewer was most probably the youngest projectionists apprentice. He talks about one of his most treasured friends and memories of his time spent with Alf Mahon the cinema projectionist on the Mauretania Cruise Liner.

Needs to be quicker than that lacing the film into the projector, lol
She is awake, it's nice to see
Thanks to RUclips’s algorithms this great little video popped into my feed. I’ve googled where this is as I would love to visit, but have discovered it’s closed and shows no signs of reopening. So sad 😢
Very interesting.... I have four recordings by my Aunt made at the Gaumont, Dingle, which were accompanied by the Wurlitzer. I've been wondering who might have played the organ for a while now... I've dropped Dave a line to see if he can help answer that question. :-)
Absolutely no other work like this in the world. 20yrs in the game & absolutely loved every second of it. You did not do it for the money ,it was absolute showmanship
Lovely Very well articulated about the creativity we seem to have lost and Liverpool of old that was amazing to grow up in
Love it Alfred
Hello Dave.Gerry from PRS
i used to splt from a cake stand to 1 hour spools while running. and put on a fresh spool while film on the screen. alarms and end sequecnce switched off. we done it and pretended we didnt
Unfortunately, commenting under a pseudonym. Born and bred in Liverpool, I watched my first big movie at 6 years old at the WPH, the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship. A life changing moment for me. Above everything that happened in my life before that moment whether good or bad, many moments don’t stand out but this film, made a big part of my childhood which led to my future endeavors. Thank you all at WPH. Forever in my heart.
I was doing that
Very interesting but very badly filmed! That's a shame . It would have been wise to film the ignition of the lantern instead of remaining frozen on the curtain of the screen .....
A cinema with lovely red velvet tabs. That's something rarely seen by youngsters today.
How can happy memories be so painful?
Great Video of Alex Cox inside The FUTURIST CINEMA Lime St Liverpool recalling his visit as a 13 year old boy watching Sam Peckinpahs Classic Cult X cert Western "The Wild Bunch" in 70mm on the Giant Screen at The FUTURIST all gone now but not forgotten! - Mark Lees - Ex Cinema Projectionist
David Ellis,Mark Lees, Eric Norgate, and Mike Taylor all ex Cinema Projectionists tell their stories of working in the industry and the interesting world of the Cinema Projectionist - Hosted by Mr Peter Grant - Enjoy!
Great video of my life long pal Mike Taylor ex Projectionist from the Paramount/ODEON London Rd Liverpool in the Projection Room at Birkehead Town Hall in conversation with Mr Peter Grant. Mike looks after and maintains the equipment here which is on permanent loan from the Projected Picture Trust - PPT Northwest - Keep up the good work Mike!
Another super little film from Frank Baker keeping Cinema and Film alive on the net the lovely Woolton Cinema in Liverpool long may it continue!!
Had the pleasure of filming Derek back in 1997.. he was a lovely man, very interesting life and very generous. He gave us a tour of the inside of the Lime Street Forum, allowed us to film everything and anything and even ran some film through the projector so we could get some shots of the magnificent 'screen 1.' I recently found out he passed away. I'd really like to know when this was. Great man.
Yes, Derek was such a lovely man and loved every minute as a projectionist. He talked about his love of the cinema every time we met. I too was saddened to hear of his passing. I will find out exactly when for you but from memory, it must have been about 4 years ago. Maybe if someone sees these comments before I find out, they can correct me. Thank you for your comment he was one of Liverpool's finest and a Reel Hero
"Tricks and trade" must be local version. Pretty painful.

Great to see you Chris. My first ever tv job was with you. Shadow On The Earth. I played one of the boys’ elder brother. You were so kind and patient and made it a wonderful experience. Glad to see you after thirty odd years. Stay well chum. Best wishes Steve
deinterlace the video please!
I confess to everything....no wonder she hid the scissors from me from that day onwards, lol.
Also, why did I get the shaft from M.D. Anderson when I was an ambassador for excellence?
I will remind you Michael S. Ewer, M.D. that you are the most humourous person, but I got my first real prescription glasses and I still can not see the computer. So what is the final analysis toward the tech. community in your opinion?
Great to see vetran Cinema Projectionist Jim Wood being interviewed about his time at the ABBEY CINEMA WAVERTREE LIVERPOOL and showing CINERAMA Films.I worked with Jim at the CLASSIC Cinema in King St Wallasey when he was a relief Projectionist there this was during my training days as a Projectionist in 1974 - 75 always a pleasure working with Jim telling great stories from the past. Jim has now passed away but great memories and Thanks to Frank Baker for getting this interview with Jim and his Cinema memories.Happy Days! - Mark Lees - Ex Cinema Projectionist - Wallasey - April 2021.
Superb 👍
Love your comments on "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" at The ODEON London Rd in 1965,was screened in Todd AO 70mm 6 Track Stereo must have looked amazing on that giant 55ft Wide Screen at The ODEON.My life long friend Mike Taylor was one of the projection crew at the time and no doubt you know it played at The ODEON in 1965 for a record breaking 2 years! a record thats never been broken.Your film "LETTER TO BREZHNEV" played for over a year on its initial release at The ODEON on one of the screens what a result this never happens now in so called modern cinema anyhow just not the same ALL the Film has gone just on a Digital Harddrive it isnt the same magic as 35mm film running through a Projector im sure you agree.Happy Days! i do a spot every week by the way on Linda McDermotts late show on BBC Radio Merseyside on a Wednesday night usually around midnight when i do a film review for the weeks films coming up on Tv to watch out for and we often talk about the great days of Cinema and going to the pictures. - Mark Lees - Ex Cinema Projectionist and Former DJ from The MASQUERADE Club in the 80s.
Great stories Chris remember Happy Days at the old MASQUERADE Club in Casey St,with Frank and Margi.
Clayton Square 👍👍
Love this guy.Totally genuine and a great director.
My first memory of the Woolton was to watch Disney’s Bambi in the mid 50s and fond memories of the Saturday afternoon matinees which was the norm in those days
Good video
Thank you ;)
Great acting
Yes indeed she is and she is an absolute joy and a pleasure to work with. We love her too.
Well presented Alfred Mahon - wife Rhonda says she really enjoys your posts about your life with Jean...

I live 250 miles away in Scotland and am a projectionist. Never visited this place but just heard it closed the other day. This video is too painful to watch 💔
You'll be interested to learn CineSinge that The Woolton was saved from closure today (18.9.20) due to donations provided by members of the public. Many thanks for your concern for this wonderful picture house.
Those deco cinemas made grandeur accessible to the community, and dreams too. Another thing those deco cinemas made accessible to the community was community itself. As long as there was a picture house, as long as there was a Post Office, as long as there was a corner shop, just as surely as the NHS, then Margaret Thatcher's remark to the Woman's Own in 1987, "There's no such thing as society," was disproven. That's why all those social fixtures were eroded. The economy was engineered to wipe them out, as if progress could have gone in no other direction than the way it was dictated. Get my drift?
It's telling that this old film about Liverpool has BBC accents throughout and no sign of Scouse.
Fabulous.
What a great cinema. John Lennon used to go there.
Great.
Margi is terrific. Terrific.
What a wobbly video: made me quite dizzy! For goodness sake, hold the camera steady.
Fantastic place 😀✌️
i saw oliver there in 1970? walked past every day day then crossed the road to out lane by the sweet shop.happy days.
I saw Mario Lanza films here in the fifties. Loved the cracks the young lads made during the films.
I noticed he had to re-frame in the gate. That would mean he didn't set set the intermittent before threading up.
Luvverly stuff. Would anyone have info on the (West) Derby Picture Palace Night (Thursday's) Featured band was "Sam Bonner Jazz Band" and guest band was usually "Jack Mac (McCartney) Jazz Band" I think that Sam Bonner's band were guests on Sunday's at Southport Pier Pavillion with Wallace Hartley's' Band from opening night March 2? 1910 until shortly before The Titanic gig.... I always liked the Rivoli for two reasons; It ran Horror Films and It may have had a career before it was a Cinema. ... Thanks
Great guy!
Isn't he, I've been lucky enough to be a friend of his for nearly forty years now.
I want to cry.
