I had pretty good marks (4As, 3Bs, 1C, this was back in 2010). Many universities look for a level 5 or 6 for pure maths and English. Check the prospectus of the school you're looking at.

Many varsities look for pure maths for the CA stream.You could do a normal Bcom degree for 3 years, and then do your BCTA (which is a bridging course to qualify you for CTA/honours, at least at UJ) after your degree.

Yes He can. There's extended programs that cater for such scenarios. Ideally He could do any basic accounting course at TUT for example then after he gets his Btech , he can register to do CTA's or PGDA for one more year which will give him admission into writing the board exams to become a CA

I see I am late in my response, hope your son managed to make a decision. UJ is accredited, I think UWC as well (link to full list included below). He can do a non CA stream accounting degree, and later a bridging course which allows one to do CTA/ honours. You can do a normal accounting degree (3 years), and then a bridging course for 1 more year (BCTA at UJ or Unisa) to get admitted to CTA/honours. It's possible, just that your journey will be 1 year longer 🙂

I vouch for the audit experience, especially if you arent sure of the industry you want to end up in ( in audit, you get exposure to banks, mines, government, retail etc). Its one thing to know you want to be an FD, but also NB to know which industry you want to work in ( I trained with an audit firm, then worked in investment banking (commercial property division), and I am currently a Finance Director of a property investment company. Audit exposed me to commercial property, and made me realize I wanted to pursue that further) That said, if you know the industry you want to work in, then go for that from day 1.

You still have a chance even after failing first year :) In terms of marks expectations, do you mean marks required to move into the next year within the CA course? If so, it depends on the institutions. I am not too sure how things work now but previously in my time (and that's over 10 years ago😬), UJ had a 60% requirement for accounting, and if I remember correctly a 55% average overall for you to remain in the CA stream the next year.
