I am watching this video for a second time and will probably watch it a few more times to digest everything you shared. I have similar issues within my family, but things were clearly stated to me, so I understood how people felt with regards to me. I wasn’t neglected in full so that’s used to dismiss the bad things I experienced and felt. Also, I had the realisation that what I experienced wasn’t “normal” until I went to university, then lived abroad and had to come back “home”. I’ve concluded, I was being competed with (and hated on with a strong wish for my failure in life), and only had good treatment when my successes shone a positive light on her that she could reap benefits from (although she did not contribute to my journey significantly, and used to claim she did until I set the record straight!) The constant need to fight or have an argument is a shared experience, and the wanting to move past a violent tirade or confrontation, as if nothing happened is also something I have experienced. She had the “woe is me” and “everyone does me wrong” mantra. I am also violently attacked, even at an adult age…yeah. I know this is not normal at all. Some people shouldn’t be parents. Low contact, and defining and enforcing strong boundaries is a must! I have just accepted she is the way she is, and I will not be like her and build a more positive relationship with my child (including any siblings), friends and chosen family.

I agree. I came to the realization that many blacks grow up in black household, especially single black households, often haven't been bug, kissed, held, etc beyond being a baby. They were not told I love you, and talked to with derision, anger, and as if they're a burden. Living with a person who treats that way day in and day out is going to cause some slow growing trauma. The child feels unloved. When they are disciplined, it's not balanced with love.
