The Imperfect Chicken Coop
США

Follow my life with chickens. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I'll share what has and hasn't worked for me.
Chickens get a bath, a snack and a drink before bed on a hot evening. #chickencoop
One of the ways chickens stay cool is thru their feet. We've had some very hot weather. So I put out some cool water baths for them to stand in. Of course, they also drink out of the yummy foot water. Yuck.
Do you know the other ways chickens release heat? Well, they pant like a dog to get rid of some of the heat. They will also stand with their wings away from their bodies with their feathers ruffled to allow airflow .
One thing you DON'T want to do is wet your chickens down because it will inhibit them from being able to ruffle their feathers. Provide them fresh cool water, with ice if necessary. Make sure they have shade. And if possible, put a fan where they can voluntarily catch a br...

Will this BROODY BUFF ORPINGTON CHICKEN accept store bought chicks? #backyardchickens
Просмотров 8892 года назад
My broody chicken only had 1 egg with a chick in it under her, so when it hatched I gave her 5 chicks that I bought from my local farm supply stores! Sometime you have to give a broody hen chicks that they did not hatch but that came from another source (hatchery/farm supply store). The good thing is that its very rare for a hen to incubate and hatch her own biological chicks. There may be some...
HOW MANY SNAKES DID I CATCH TODAY NEAR MY CHICKEN COOP? #backyardchickens
Просмотров 4712 года назад
To keep my chickens safe from snakes, I catch and relocate them. Today I caught an unbelievable number! My trick? I use minnow traps. Safe for both the snakes and your chickens. Examine the area around your coop and think like a snake. Where would you hide if you couldn't regulate your own body temperature? What would be your path of travel? That's where you need to place your traps. I used to ...

What your CHICKEN'S COMB can tell you. #backyardchickens
Просмотров 9 тыс.2 года назад
Your chicken's health will make their comb look differently. Chickens with health and/or nutrition issues will often have pale combs. If you're chicken has a bright red comb that stands up or sits as expected, she or he is probably pretty healthy. If you chicken's comb has a blue or purple tinge to it, it means they do not have enough oxygen in their blood. What can cause this? Internal parasit...
How to Catch A Snake! #backyardchickens
Просмотров 5372 года назад
I inspect my chicken coop traps twice a day to find and relocate any new snake visitors! I never want to let them sit in the trap for any length of time as they can not regulate their own body temperature. So I try to relocate them fairly quickly after I find them. Think you want to trap and relocate some snake friends from your property? Here's where you can get your minnow traps. I have 4 aro...
How to keep snakes away from your Chicken Coop. #backyardchickens
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 года назад
Snakes around a Chicken Coop can be a problem. How to get rid of them can be tricky! I don't remember where I heard of this trick, but I use minnow traps! I have 4 of them around my coop area and I frequently catch snakes (and mice and beetles!) I have put eggs in the traps to entice snakes in, but I haven't found that bating them has any influence on the number of snakes I catch. So now I just...

I don’t think birds can suck.
He would definitely be in that cage floating with the fishes
Are you still using the copper pipe? How did the warmer month go with algae grow the your waters?
Thank you for relocating theses beautiful snake, that fellow looks like he's trying to act mean in reality he's probably scared.
Ginger snap ❤
We sell them for $5 the general store across from us sells them for $8 😮
Where you get the buff chickens from or where can I get some? Thank you
What if comb is bent and look burnt ?
Now hes another chicken owners problem 😂
You said algorithm gods……. Do you watch admin?
"something's going on." Great information...not.
Thank you so much for the info. I can see my broody chicken’s comb turned pale. I’ll make sure she doesn’t brood for too long. Thank you
Out of curiosity because I am new to having chickens and am learning as much as I possibly can. Why not place the eggs under her to incubate?😊
Keep your birds healthy with acidified copper sulfate-it's an inorganic compound that is safe for drinking water and feed for turkeys, chickens, pigeons, … Mann Lake LTD Acidified Copper Sulfate 16 oz | Mann Lake Ltd.
Works on copperheads to caught one couple nights ago use farm fresh eggs do not clean.
Thanks a lot!
What brand are the security cams installed in the coop --??

Súper cool factoids! 🥰
I love Factoids
So adorable!!❤
All you have to do is add 5ml of apple cider vinegar per gallon and you'll never have to mess with copper again.....PRO TIP👍
Have you actually tried this? I find that water gets gross faster with apple cider vinegar and definitely has to be changed daily. It's like the vinegar causes it to start growing something.
He probably owns a apple cider vinegar company. 😂😂
Copper pipe. Makes sense, it's an anti- bacterial, naturally. I didn't know about algea though.
❤appreciate the content 🙏 😊
My roosters comb and waddle are turning black. I’m feeding the black bird seed, layer pellets, oyster shell, chicken scratch so, I’m stressing about why this is happening. Can u help me please
Wish my 5 girls would share a bowl/plate of food? Have to 'spread it all around, due to fighting...lol Guess I missed the crop bra? Looked like more than one was in need though.
Did it work ?
It ran faster then I could. I would die 😅
I noticed my hen's comb started to turn purple-ish so I checked her out and found that her crop seemed like it hadn't emptied. For the following mornings, her crop was still full and hadn't emptied so I figured she had an impacted crop which she did. I massaged her crop several times a day and it is now back to normal and she started eating again, but her comb is still purple. How can I know what's wrong with her?
Choo choo!
She protected one of her adopted babies! How sweet. It cracks me up that she went to sleep with one baby and woke to six babies. Can't imagine how that would feel if it happened to me 😆
Little ex dinosaurs.
Where do you buy your chicks from? You have such a nice colorful healthy flock. Enjoy your channel very much.
cool chicken
I’m going to try this.
Enjoy your video's. Your flock is beautiful. What is your favorite breed if you had to pick out one?
Interesting.....are you sure they cannot get back out? One of the better ideas I have seen. I hope you took the snake far enough away, they are pretty resourceful and can find their way back. I too would like to know what you used for bait......I am thinking an egg like Sideshow Billy commented.
Nope! They go through a funnel/cone shape which has sharp wires facing in - not a smooth edge. So even if they find the opening, they would get stabbed by the wire. Kinda like those parking lot exits that have the sharp spikes facing the road to keep people from driving in the exit! I don't use bait - I used to use old eggs - but then I realized I caught just as many in traps without bait! So I just set them out empty! And I relocate them a couple miles away, near growth and water - but away from people!
What did you use for bait? an egg? Is that a coachwhip snake? or some kind of racer?
I believe this was a racer. I don't bait the traps at all! I used to use older eggs, but then I realized I caught just as many in the unbaited traps!
Good info but some places have difficulty hearing.
Thanks! Im still learning, I'll keep that in mind!
What kind of snakes were they? What state are you in?
I am in Oklahoma. Not really sure what kind they were - the were not venom-snakes. Harmless! Just don't want them growing into large snakes around my coop where they'll eat my eggs and chicks!
@@theimperfectchickencoop6552 I'm in FL. While most snakes are harmless, we do have rattlesnakes and cottonmouths. I love your use of the minnow traps! I wonder what makes them go in--but 4 snakes seems to prove they work!
We have rattlesnakes and cottonmouths here too. I used to put older eggs in them, but I didn't see a difference between the traps with and the traps without eggs - so I just stopped wasting eggs!
I am betting Dekay’s Brownsnake - look up images :) you'll see
The first snake was a wondering garter snake. They're totally harmless, but do have a very mild venom to kill small fish and insects by causing their blood not to clot.
Mari… short for Marigold. Her color looks just like the variety I have in my flower bed. 😎
All us moms can relate lol
Too stinking cute! His own personal taxi lol
IT'S adorable!! Congrats y'all!!
Thanks D!
Love your videos !! Im learning so much about chickens 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you! And thanks for the encouragement!
Aww shes precious 💖
Thank you!
Aww she's a doll wink wink 😉 😘
Funny!
Hi, she is beautiful. Just out of curiosity why not slip the eggs under her instead of incubating them? I'm not asking because I have a different opinion but, because I am a new flock owner and I am still learning...I am truly curious. 😊
Barbie that was my late girls name. I miss her she look just like your hen. God bless enjoy ur channel.
Thank you! Barnie is a wonderful name!
Lol thank you she thought she was the prettiest in the flock. She liked looking at her self all the time. So Barbie it was 😆.
Thanks funny!
