Colorado Night Thunderstorm Lightning - July 20, 2024 (vid 4 of 4)
Lightning on an night thunderstorm. Quite an active storm lightning-wize .. but due to location its mostly flashes in the clouds, with a couple visible strikes later in the vid.
View is looking southeast & up.
The audio is mostly just rain-noise as most of the lightning was too far away to hear thunder.
Oh and... never stop StormWatching!

    What modifications do a ballast need for such a show?

    • @XmasLightsGuy
      @XmasLightsGuy 15 дней назад

      No modifications to the ballast, it just has to be an electronic instant-start ballast. As long as it doesn't have EOL-protection any brand/model I've tested will do. Note.. the part where the tube starts out dim/pink isn't related to the ballast, thats because its old & low on mercury...occasionally you'll get one that happens to.

    oh wow that’s really good for your own sets! Yeah ballast will blow as they age regardless if they run dimmer. Both sets I have on the window are dim sets but one is even dimmer than the other one and makes the brighter of the 2 look bright lol.

    • @XmasLightsGuy
      @XmasLightsGuy 2 месяца назад

      Yep those certainly did good.. never would have lasted if I'd used brighter sets.. (also good thing I took them down, since part of that fence got thrashed down in a windstorm last month, probably would have broken bulbs and wires) It makes perfect sense with the ballast bulbs that as they get more hours on them they'll start failing more often .. and since twinkle bulbs tend to fail first, you've replaced some along the way, so they end up being various ages newer than the ballast. Yep, its all about perspective when seeing 2 sets near eachother. If you were to put a bright set next to them, it'd look really bright while the 2 dimmer sets wouldn't be as noticeable different. lol Of the 3 sets I had up, same thing, one of them was alittle brighter, and at night it looked bright. I even went out & looked at it after putting it up, thinking maybe multiple bulbs had burned out or something...

    Also recently been going through the clear 50/50% former mall twinkle sets and noticed now I’m starting to lose a lot more ballast especially on the brighter sets no surprise. I have so many sets I decided to convert a few sets to all steady and don’t mind the dimmer light and the lights will probably last alot longer? I still have my 2 strings up on the window turned on daily 5 hours since 2020 and still working but the brighter set I have already replaced about 10 bulbs and the dimmer set I believe maybe around 2-3? All have been ballast except 2 and only replaced the 2 twinkle because they kept staying in the off position when turned on and needed a flick.

    • @XmasLightsGuy
      @XmasLightsGuy 3 месяца назад

      I still replace more twinkle bulbs than ballast, but I've noticed as my sets age, I'm replacing more ballast bulbs than I used to...I figure it'll eventually be roughly equal numbers. Those have done really well! Last November I put 3 sets along the backyard fence, and they ran 24/7 til atleast the end of February (purposely chose dimmer sets) I did replace some bulbs, but not allot. They did quite well considering running like that...

    • @XmasLightsGuy

      Pretty much so on a normal ballast. .lol. But I think these instant-start electronic ballasts don't allow it to rectify, they force AC power through ... they'll even light a tube with both filaments completely broken off their supports (ofcourse it won't last long before it fries)

    That's one reason I've always had a fascination with fluorescent lights ever since I was like probably in preschool or kindergarten, the library in the elementary school I attended from 1994 - 2000 was built in c.1960 and still had the preheat 4 foot half-piper style fixtures, found out whem another student was goofing around and turned off all the lights. The sight and sound of them all starting up at once is as fresh in my mind as it was almost 30 years ago 😄 I have to admit Slimline lamps are my favorite because of the wild EOL light show they put out. I especially love the rare 48, 36 and 24 inch Slimline because these sizes are of the bi-pin preheat or rapid start type about 99 percent of the time, in the US anyway. I have yet to see in person a Slimline shorter than 6 foot and I've only seen the 6 footer a small handful of times as compared to the 8 footer.

    • @XmasLightsGuy
      @XmasLightsGuy 4 месяца назад

      Same here, as a kid I was fascinated with fluorescents, especially seeing one go EOL. I have a couple of the 6-foot slimline fixtures that I happened across at an estate sale. And yeah anything slimline shorter than that is rare, I've seen 4-foot fixtures before (and have a 4-foot lamp), I once a oddball length lamp in a vending machine (think it was 42-inch ) I'd personally like to have one of each size fixture from 2-foot up to 8-foot.

    • @Sparky-ww5re
      @Sparky-ww5re 4 месяца назад

      @@XmasLightsGuy yeah there certainly is (or used to be) oddball lengths of slimline and HO 800mA lamps made in addition to your run of the mill 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 foot such as 42, 60, 64 and 84 inch lamps, which I would assume most if not all of these oddball sizes were used in outdoor signs, vending machines and similar niche fixtures and not general lighting. There are also F120T12, recessed Bi-pin, 10 foot tubes classified as sign lamps and the ballasts are rated in terms of total length rather than a range of wattages and T12, T8, T5 or a combination thereof, the way standard fluorescent ballasts are rated. Many years ago there were some very Interesting lamps produced to say the least. I have a 1991 Philips lighting catalog and there is an energy saving alternative to the F90T17, it is a F90T12, mogul bi-pin, 84 watts designed for use a F90T17 fixture, along with a F40T12- instant start medium bi-pin. I used to also have a 1993 GE catalog that got lost during a move last year 😡😥 and I remember seeing a F40T17 instant start mogul bi-pin, and I wanna say the F40T12- instant start as well if I remember correctly.

And yep sign ballasts are like that, I have one, it says up to 6 lamps & a total length of...(don't remember the number) I've heard of those F84T17 energy savers. kinda funny because the F90T17 itself was an energy-saver version of the original F100T17. I have a couple of the F40T17 instant-start lamps, and one F40T12 too. Both were designed to run on a F48T12 slimline ballast.

    Wow, I’m surprised that didn’t burn the plastic caps that the bulb slots into, I saw another video where someone had a EOL bulb that went like this and the ends got so hot it melted the bulb sockets

    • @XmasLightsGuy
      @XmasLightsGuy 11 месяцев назад

      @Imakeelectronicchaos Yep that can happen! Its more likely with the modern sockets that can't take as much heat as the older ones like I used. I also shut this down & let things cool off every so often.

      @@WeNeedSomeMusic Its just something that happens with these electronic ballasts. When there's that orange glow right in the end, its getting really hot - to the point where it'll melt the metal filament supports and/or internal glass around them.

      @@XmasLightsGuy I’ve got the single-lamp version in a DIY strip light that I made with my dad a while ago! I agree, they are so cool! Too bad there are no rapid start magnetic ballasts for the longer T5 lamps! Surprisingly, there wasn’t even a version for the F13T5 lamps!

      @@rs12official I've never tried it, but the 2x version like I have here should be able to light a F13T5 or F14T5. It would be really cool if one did exist that was meant for a pair of F28T5 or even F54T5-HO lamps!
