    Ryan Tubridy's Grandfather, the unelected Todd Andrews (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Andrews) was largely responsible for closing lines in the 1960s, especially in Cork but also elsewhere. Not possessing an original thought himself, he copied what the British were doing in the UK, but he also ordered the ripping up the rails and selling the land so they couldn't be used in the future. As you may detect, I'm still angry at the stupidity involved. While the recent plans for expansion to Blarney etc are welcome, there are no plans to expand to West Cork, which will hamper to development of Cork to the West. You can see the Albert Quay station here ruclips.net/video/t8OlST8kEBg/видео.html

    A pty the money spent on the "Peace Bridge" wasn't spent on a bridge to bring the line across the river to the Ulster Bus station. It still could have been called the "Peace Bride". It is very unlikely that rail will ever return to Donegal.

    A few inaccuracies. The L&NWR station originally opened in 1861 as a ferry terminal with no rail connection. There may have been siding access off the MGWR liffey Line when this opened in 1864, however, the connection shown in your video north to the GNR(I) line only opened in 1877. In addition, the line from Church Road Junction to The Point Depot (now the 3 Arena) opened in 1878. Mention also needs to be made of the line from Amiens Street to Newcomen Junction opened in 1892. Finally, the line into Dublin Port remains and was used until recently for TARA Mines traffic (currently suspended as mining operations are suspended for cost reasons).

    • @anoniaino
      @anoniaino 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the info! I was unaware the GSWR opened their depot before they had their own line. The opening dates of the LNWR station and connecting line are indeed mixed up. The reason the port tramway was not shown was because I wasn't including sidings or tramways.

    All going well a major expansion is planned with electrification and the additional of many infill stations, creating a DART for Cork (CART?) Things are going less well for the Cork Luas which Cork City councillors seem to be opposed to, but hopefully the situation will change. Really they should also reopen the Passage railway to Carrigaline (third biggest town in Ireland without railway access) and even convert the N27 back to rail.

    • @joshuaW5621

      That would be a brilliant idea. They could also possibly the rapid transit railway extend to Youghal and move the greenway they’re currently building on the old line. I’ve been speaking with railwaymen at Dun Laoghaire recently about reinstating the railway to Bantry. They said they’re talking with Redco about rebuilding it, but they don’t know if it will be under Irish Rail or another railway company. I’m also not sure how they would get it through the city.

    Ireland the land of undoing things and then putting them back. If you want something undone or pulled down then want it put back 50 years later at a thousand times the cost, and with an inter-generational timeline then by all means give us a call. Don't forget if the Irish lived in the Netherlands we'd be the first humans to redevelop gills and breath under water.

    Very good presentation. Always fascinated by the extent of railways into West Cork, my grandfather told me of taking the train to Courtmacsherry but how the dilapidated rolling stock made it a quite unpleasant experience experience. Rattling teeth seemed to be a common symptom. The unique Irish gauge meant rolling stock could not be easily replaced. Apparently worse still was the Dingle line where for purposes of stability cattle trucks were placed directly behind the engine, meaning passenger wagons were to the rear (ie downwind). Needless to say most preferred to opt for bus transport when that became available.

    • @retrocd7991
      @retrocd7991 11 месяцев назад

      The trains to courtmac were not made for comfert but rather for people! Not o mention the right curves on that line were a nightmare. Meaning the modern rolling stock CIE had at the time like the Park Royal’s, laminates and AEC railcars that were on the bantry runs at the time couldn’t run down the courtmacsherry section That section closed for regular passenger workings in 1947 which meant the track was not well looked after, infact by 1960/61 when the last excursion and beet trains were going down there the track was living on borrowed time

    Brilliant video, it's such a shame that Derry's only station nowadays is waterside, yes it's a wonderful station but a city of 100,000 people needs far more pubic transport connections. Hopefully Derry can secure a new route to Portadown and Letterkenny following the publication of the All Island Rail Review, but I'm not quite sure where they will fit all of these new lines, unless NIR/IE construct a new central station somewhere like Foyle street to create a massive Rail/Bus Interchange.
