Amy Shafer, LRSM, FRSM, RYC, is a classical harpist, pianist, and music teacher, Director of Piano Studies and Assistant Director of Harp Studies for The Harp School, Inc., holds multiple degrees in harp and piano performance and teaching, and is active as a solo and collaborative performer. With nearly two decades of teaching experience, she teaches privately, presents masterclasses and coaching sessions, and has performed and taught in Europe and USA.
She is also the owner of the successful young RUclips channel Virgin Rock, a place dedicated to one of the challenges that she took up: listening Rock Music for the first time.
“As a lover of Motion Picture Arts, I decided to take up the challenge of recording movie reviews and this is what Amy’s Cut is about. Fun, full of ideas and challenges, sprinkled with music (of course; did you expect otherwise?!), my takes on movies are meant to bring you at least one smile on your face. If that’s achieved, I am happy!”

Hello Amy. Have followed your music channel for some time, but just now discovered this. I am very excited, because I love movies, from Bergman and Fellini to Weerasethakul and Kiarostami. Back in "High School" (Denmark, so not quite the same) I went to a school where all the "music kids" played jazz, so my late teenage years was filled with the sound of Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane. But the movie "Shine", trying to tell the story of David Helfgott, gave me a real introduction to the beauty of classical music. I bought the cd's with Rachmaninov piano concertoes, Franz Liszt etc. I could think of no better person to give a review of Shine than you.
You've got a good video, possibly, but without an index of time marks, I'd not really gonna hang.
Loved this guys.........❤

You might enjoy another documentary by Howard Goodall - The Beatles, a musical appreciation and analysis. It's very good. Howard Goodall also made a six part History of Music which is well worth watching.
Vlad comes across enthusiastically as a fan. Amy more circumspect. With all the editing I'm not sure if the movie made the point that The Beatles refused to perform to segregated audiences because they were fans of black musicians like Little Richard, Fats Domino etc.
Very Lovely woman 👩 😘
I would love to see Amy watch the documentary series called classic albums and of course start with this m.ruclips.net/video/29qtzyrDgCA/видео.html it is Queen night of the opera
I'm so glad you took the time to watch this - it is one of my favorite movies of the last decade. I often pause to think about it.
Steve Reich Electric counterpoint 1987?
I was a kid when this movie came out. I saw this movie at the theaters and this was probably my first adult type movie I saw at a theater. I mean I definitely saw Snoopy come home at a theater before this. The weird thing is I saw this movie 13 times and I can't even explain why.
Amy's insights are quite remarkable. You both need to watch Howard Goodall's other movie about the Beatles, how they saved western classical traditions and revived some truly ancient ones too! ruclips.net/video/ZQS91wVdvYc/видео.html
This is all why Roger Waters of Pink Floyd commented that Pink Floy were amazed by the album, saying it felt like it gave them "permission" of sorts to branch out and explore in there creations.
Remarkable.....The Beatles were like the Sun coming out to shine a little on a drab England still struggling to emerge from the War and austerity, as if to give a little freedom and hope to a people worn out by death and depression.....and thats one detail no one can reproduce, the fact the context of the times is always missing, except in our heads, the ones who were there......
Dear Amy and Vlad, please watch the Biopic "A Complete Unknown " about Bob Dylan's starting career from 1961 to 1965. You 'll have great fun too ❤🎉
Hey Amy. I think it's a mistake you don't record yourself watching the movie. That's what people like to see in these kinds of "first watch" channels. You could always edit the video to a smaller runtime, but it would be much interesting to see your comments during the movie as well as after.
Would Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring possibly be that piece/performance when that shock moment of change occurred in classical music?
All of Howard Goodall's documentaries are worth a watch. He has a knack for breaking down the complexities of music into language that is easily understood by anyone, irregardless of musical education. His series on the History of Music is a great one to watch, as he traces the way music has developed over the millennia. Dunno if it's still on YT, but it certainly used to be...
Fantastic, thanks
The BBC TV version with Joss Akland and Claire Bloom was better. I think it's still on RUclips. It addresses many of the things missing in the Hopkins version. That said, I liked this one very much also. Different actors and directors bring out new facets and both of them here give intelligent and moving performances.
A shame that Amy references Edison and not the true genius that was Nikola Tesla.
It's a good movie. It's a good movie unless you struggled to fit your worldview/ideology into a way that doesn't actually fit. It's a fictional movie from an alternative universe, as are all movies.
Love you both ❤ xx*
Most interesting review, Amy. This type of movie (which I've read about, not seen) reminds me so much of a few books in particular that I was "forced" to read in English class back in the 1970s: ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT; JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN; ANIMAL FARM; and 1984 - in the sense that when I read those books, it felt like I was reading of a history that had passed. It really didn't occur to me then that whoever (whomever? jeez, I hate grammar with a passion, always have, but I love to read, which somewhat makes up for it) was creating the curricula ("curriculum?" Singular or plural? See what I mean?) probably actually (actually probably? ahhh!) had in mind to WARN us students to... you know... be vigilant, for the sake of retaining our republic (not exactly a democracy... wish it was... one person, one vote... for real). This movie (I think, from what I've read in the papers) is a current depiction of an American dystopia that people like Orwell were warning us readers about.
I appreciate and concur with your review of what is indeed an exceptional and powerful film, Amy. Alex Garland is to my mind among the very best cinema storytellers we have today, and this upsetting, truthful and deeply compassionate work was plainly torn from the heart. There’s much that can be said about the narrative and performances (all great), but it’s worth noting that this is also a bravura piece of filmmaking. I saw it on release in IMAX, and Garland utilised that medium’s potential brilliantly, with an extraordinary 360° sound design and grand visual panoramas that put the viewer directly into the melee. And all on a budget that by typical blockbuster standards wouldn’t cover the lunch budget. Met with tepid-to-decent reviews on release, I felt that too many of these were either somewhat partisan or simply didn’t get it. For me, it was one of the best and most important mainstream films in years. FYI Amy, Alex Garland’s other work is great too; his science fiction work is highest quality, using genre wisely, meaningfully and compellingly. Try Ex Machina and Annhialation if you haven’t already 😊
Nice review Amy. A person can be egocentric - what's good is what's good for me. Then a person can be ethnocentric - what's good is what's good for us (i.e. the people I like). And then a person can be worldcentric - what's good is what's good for all of us. This comes from the developmental psychologist from Harvard named Lawrence Kohlberg. For a democracy to be fully functional it should be worldcentric imho. That said the film is also about the importance of journalism in helping us to understand tumultuous times.
I mentioned once before that it would be worth checking out Howard Goodall.
Yes, a perfect film. But hard to watch and feel hope anymore for me. The world and this country has had all of its hope wrung out of it.
Their musical maturity growth was pretty unbelievable. Just 3 years earlier, they'd been singing Yeah Yeah Yeah.
Can't wait for the Penny Lane review and analysis. It's my favorite Beatles song.
Tchaikovsky's use of cannons in the 1812th was pretty heavy, bold and innovative.
Andrew Scott, is the man. 🎭👍
Any working band is trying to get better all the time...to grow...or it ends.
Howard Goodall is a composer of choral music, stage musicals, film and TV scores including The Vicar of Dibley, Red Dwarf and Mr. Bean. His settings of Psalm 23 and Love Divine are amongst the most performed of all contemporary choral works. he had a musical performed this year in the US Based on Shakespeare's a Winters Tale
Ooooh, Amy needs to listen to some Ennio Morricone, brilliant classical composer who started writing film soundtracks under pseudonym because it was stigma. He used electric instruments a lot in some parts
Regarding Amy’s comment that she recognized something different about the sound of the harp on “She’s Leaving Home.” The song was the first Beatles recording not to have George Martin as producer. George Martin later said one of his biggest regrets was not having worked on that recording due to another commitment at the time. When Paul McCartney heard that Martin wasn’t available he arranged to have Micheal Leander step in as arranger and producer. It might be interesting to listen to another recording that Leander produced in 1964 in which the use of an unusual sounding harp is very prominent. The song is “Morning Sun” sung by British folk/pop singer Marianne Faithfull. I hear a similarity in the two songs though not exact. What do you think?
I love The Beatles commentary you share, Mrs. Shafer. In part because of it I am beginning to think of the band as more of a musical act than as musicians. The genius of the songs they recorded seems far beyond the capabilities of any of the members of the band, and their production schedule clearly didn't allow much time for song writing, composition, rehersal, etc. Maybe I'm stupid about this, because I am not a musician. Still, something about The Beatles doesn't seem kosher.
You are a treasure. Glad to learn you are a reader. You escaped the madness of most kids growing up in the USA.
My brother strongly refutes the idea that Penny Lane's 4 beats to a bar was a division of Little Richard's 8 beat. His argument being something like "Nonsense, it's a march". Any thoughts?
Hopefully you'll get round to watching the original Maysels film, The Beatles first U.S visit which us where Scorsese took lots of film from, its an amazing film
Fashion Tip, The black top looks great on you and is totally appropriate for what you are doing. If you are only going to wear one item of clothing, let this be the one.
I dunno. I have come to love her rather subdued white blouse with black trim, and love the fact that she wears it in each video. But that's me.... 🙂
Zappa mixed Modern Classical music and Rock
No mention of the squeaking orchestra chair (One of the players shifted their seat), on the sustained last note of A Day in the Life….? Which is quite audible, with headphones or volume control .
I don’t know the dynamic between these two but I can immediately see that Amy is 99% of wives and girlfriends of dudes who are hardcore Beatles fans. She has had enough of the Beatles and wants to talk about something else but her husband is obsessed with them (like many millions of people are) and in her mind she’s like “the Beatles are really good and I understand their fan base and I like their songs myself but can we talk about SOMETHING that isn’t Beatle related?? I can’t take anymore Beatles..” and the husband is like “Amy, I understand and I respect your feelings. Let’s go make a fruit salad. By the way, do you know who absolutely loved fruit salad? Ringo. It was his favorite food and he ate it 3 meals a day. This was around the time period of the white album. By the way, did you know that Abby Road and Let It Be were out of order and…” then Amy slightly raises her voice and says “Enrique honey, let’s just watch the documentary. I’ll watch it with you.” She’s the classic good wife (it would appear) who says “let’s watch your movie” or “let’s play your game” or “let’s do what you want to do” and her reasoning is “I want you to be happy.” And Amy, that is extremely sweet but if you want Enrique to be happy, you need to do something that you simply can’t do - love the Beatles as much as Enrique does. *** This message is for all the wives and girlfriends of guys who are obsessed with the Beatles : “we are sorry.. we just LOVE This band and we want you to experience the same beautiful experience that we do and we want you to enjoy bc this band means so much to us and we want you to have it too. We want YOU to be happy and when you disregard or get aggravated or become dismissive of them, it doesn’t land like you think that it does and in reality, nothing would make us happier than you sitting down to watch a Beatles thing or listening to a Beatles record with us and experiencing the magic together.”
That really made us laugh!
I’m a Beatles fan all of my life but I couldn’t imagine sharing love of Beatles music with my wife. She tolerated going to a Rolling Stones concert once. She’s just not interested in most “rock” music. I can understand it. It’s a cultural thing. She’s Cuban and prefers Latin music.
Please watch “Yellow Submarine “. It’s an amazing movie with wonderful music. The situation in the world today would be much more peaceful if Yellow Submarine were our world now.
It ail blurred together for me. Hauled down to the music hall in houston Texas where reigned Leopold Stokowski and taught about all that and presented with "classical music" and then the panoply of of "pop". as blended with all I was hearing, what an incredible time.
I didn't know what this "movie" was, and AFRAID it would be the Bee Gee's Sgt. Pepper Movie. So, clicked on this and was VERY glad that not only is it a documentary, but one I've watched and loved! He has such good insights! I'm subscribe to your other channel, will subscribe to this one now. (And watch the video. Because I stopped to comment right at the beginning! 😆)
Okay, that was great! I look forward to you hearing Penny Lane. Thanks!
Great video, learned a lot.
Not to undermine the revolutionary aspects of Sgt.Pepper which are unquestionable, but part of it didn’t come out of thin air, especially when it comes to it’s production and the use of the studio recording as an art form or even as an instrument itself. It’s well known how the Beatles, especially McCartney were influenced by „Pet Sounds” by the Beach Boys for the making of Sgt. Pepper. Brian Wilson, who was the main mastermind behind that album, had actually already used the studio recording in the way that I described before, one year before Sgt. Pepper came out to the public. And Brian Wilson did all of that alone, without any external help, since he has not only composed most of „Pet Sounds”’s music, but he also arranged it and produced it to boot, contrary to the Beatles who had to help each other out and needed George Martin’s help for the final result of the album „Sgt. Pepper”. And to accentuate even more the genius of Brian Wilson, he did all of that being deaf in one ear and being only 23 years old. In fact, McCartney praise his genius to no end. The arrangements, sounds, rhythms, melodies, vocal harmonies etc. of „Pet Sounds” were also very colorful, creative, imaginative and unprecedented in the history of pop music. And the concept behind the album (yes, it was a concept album even before Sgt. Pepper🙂) is even more defined and clear than the concept behind "Sgt. Pepper". You could even say that the album tells a story, with a beginning, middle section and an end. I think that Amy would enjoy it, because the way it was composed is a bit similar to how classical music is composed. For example, the rhythms, percussions (which by the way are very varied, creative etc.) are also used not to "play down the pulse" like with pop/rock music "but punctuate it" as the guy in the documentary said concerning Ringo Starr's drumming on "A Day In The Life" or even used as counterpoints. Also, a lot of orchestrations are used in the album, not so much electric rock instruments P.S. Sir George Martin "Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened... Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds"
Yes, Pet Sounds paved the way to Sgt Pepper's (and Pet Sounds was itself an answer to Rubber Soul's innovations).
@@nicohappysad Of course, both are brilliant (Beatles and Beach Boys but especially Brian Wilson) and influenced each other more than once🙂
Yeah, I think Brian Wilson also can be credited with turning popular music into art, but not the Beach Boys as a whole. Those songs on Pet Sounds were Brian and the Wrecking Crew.
@@davedem4107 Yes, you are right🙂 But without the voices and the vocal harmonies of the rest of the Beach Boys, the album would have lacked part of it's magic, beauty and brilliance😀It may be true tough that Brian precisely instructed them how to sing their vocal parts but they are neverthless talented singers🙂
Everything is fair game stylistically…….in the classical world the great German/Russian composer ALFRED SCHNITTKE…Polystylism
