That British Whovian: Doctor Who CD Collection (2023)
Просмотров 723Год назад
My collection of Doctor who CDs covering the TV soundtracks, Big Finish and a few other oddities along the way. I didn’t expect the video to be this long, I honestly expected 15 minutes at most not a near hour long video covering my CDs, this isn’t even that many.

    10:41 I don't think that's a sign that it's never been played, some video recorders rewind the tape back a bit further then others do, my new Panasonic machine does that (although it doesn't do it all the way so I know the end of tape sensor is working). Also I have a sealed copy of Batman Forever and even on that you can see some of the recorded tape on the take up spool (the promo stuff is still sealed inside so I know it's factory sealed). I guess one of the ways you can tell if the tape has been played is to look at the tape itself under the flap if it's rewound and see if it has some horizontal creasing, if it does then it probably has been played. Also, have you ever encountered any problems with copy protection on any of the years tapes?

    Thanks for this video, It’s made me want to hunt down all the David Tennant promos. I also have all of the classic Sun promos including ‘Robots of Death Ep 1’ & ‘Earthshock Ep 1’, you might be interested to know that there were also a number of CD soundtrack promos including ‘Mission to the Unknown episode’ ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ & ‘Slipback’ from the Daily Telegraph.

      Oh I had forgotten about those pieces of history, that has reminded me that I wanted to get Mission to the Unknown before I had the full set when I was a lot younger but wasn’t allowed to for whatever reason. I may have to get them now to join the other magazine CDS I have even if I have mainly focused on the magazine Big finish stories and whatever else I’ve stumbled across at charity shops or conventions

      The discs don’t actually have any menus they were produced en mass and on the cheap, you’d put them in you’d be greeted by 2/Entertain and then it would play the episode on loop. Ironically when my only working DVD player was an Xbox but without a DVD remote for said system “Day of Armageddon” and “The Faceless ones” were my only comfort as a result.

      As I’m sure I mentioned in the video, I feel a big finish collection says a lot more about a Doctor who fan more than most other aspects as a collector, as it’s often a pick and chose, finding as many as I did in a charity shop was great, mainly because of how ideal it was for me and them, they sold them at a decent price and I bought them for such. The only thing I find any issue with if a small one is it’s more the newer stuff that has come in, especially as someone who focuses on the older big finish stuff first, as the value of those does steadily increase, I think the oldest thing I’ve found was Companion Chronicles 2.2 Helicon Prime, and that was a 2006 release I believe

    They really didn't give Hartnell a flattering picture for "The Hartnell Years"! I'm jealous of the Dalek tin box sets, but I still have the Davros Box Set on my shelf because it's visually great. The sets were beautifully made. Everything was beautifully made back then. Thank you for showing off your VHS collections. It makes me actually want to go out and buy some of these.

    • @that-british-whovian

      A lot of these are purely for collectors value but some do have reason and meaning as I said, “the Chase” for example is handy because the DVD version is “edited” to remove mistakes, which isn’t something I’m the biggest fan of, so using an unwatched VHS will give the clearest and crisp image I can for said comparison

    • @that-british-whovian
      @that-british-whovian Год назад

      I’m aware of them but nothing that I’m too knowledgeable about outside of the now defunct Audiovisuals, which I would like to get my hands on at some point. In fact “Minuet in hell” is actually a massive in joke about Audiovisuals, as one of the plot points surrounding Nick Briggs character of Gideon Crane involves him thinking he’s the Doctor a very heavy nod to his time with Audiovisuals when he played the role, ironically that story having been adapted from an Audiovisuals audio.

    • @TheSegaStoner
      @TheSegaStoner Год назад

      @@that-british-whovian if you're interested in AudioVisuals, than I have to recommend BBV, granted I'm bias about that, but genuinely BBV grew from AV prior to Big Finish, and features many ppl who went onto Big Finish and the tv show... Many still pop back from time to time as well.

    11:07: What kind of issue is that? They simply can't put something on the set which doesn't exist! You should be glad that they at least made a telesnap reconstruction of the missing episode. Otherwise, you would have got the two orphaned episodes only, if you were lucky. They also could have simply left this story out completely.

    • @that-british-whovian
      @that-british-whovian Год назад

      My thoughts on this are simple really, and have been like this for a long time, that they since around 2014 when they animated Episodes 1&3 of “The Moonbase” they’d effectively expanded the animation range beyond a majority surviving story to 50% surviving which meant that we now had the possibility of seeing “the crusade” and “the underwater menace” with two animated episodes. Whilst I’m well aware of the reason we haven’t thus far in the guise of the repeated it would be too costly to animate, that argument to me has become more or less a hypocrisy given that from 2019 to 2022 we saw the animation of no less than 5 episodes that have sat in the archives for at least a decade by the time it was all said and done, time and money I felt was wasted there, the money used on those 5 episodes could have brought us around 2-3 more releases before the BBCAmerica funding ended, one of those releases could have and in my and many others opinions should have been “The Crusade” as fans had been after that for a considerably long time. whilst I’m personally satisfied with the reconstructions, in this case I take umbrage with how it was handled, something I should have clarified better in the video but my thoughts will be expressed more clearly in a later video.

    • @Nikioko
      @Nikioko Год назад

      @@that-british-whovian The problem isn't the money, it is the feasibility. In The Crusade, there are so many characters involved in fighting scenes, that is hard to animate. We will face the same issue again with The Highlanders. And orphan episodes were animated along with lost episode to get a uniform look. That didn't increase the production costs significantly.

    Nice video, personally I love the Blu-ray limited sets, understand that some people are conscious of the robustness of the sets (not to mention the price!) but I do like a nicely packaged Blu-ray, not just DW but also any vintage TV or film set such as the ones Network put out. I have a few of the classic steel-books but decided to limit myself to only those with at least 1 missing episode intact. I also spotted that Peter’s name was missing from the box credits for season 2, these box credits seem to be very erratic! an oversight I imagine. I’d be interested in your opinion on the box cover art? Lee Bindings artwork throughout these sets is fantastic but I’m not entirely convinced on the front cover imagery, the various poses of the Doctor holding something out in his hands just doesn't convince at all!! Tom Bakes season 12 is the only one that looks natural.

    • @that-british-whovian
      @that-british-whovian Год назад

      I love the overall consistency in the design but at the same time I do appreciate the notion that the same gesture is getting tiresome even if I’m personally not bothered by it. And with the new boxset which has been announced today and is available for preorder I love everything but Jon’s face it seems a bit funny to me

    • @andysvinyl1565
      @andysvinyl1565 Год назад

      Yeah, I’ve pre-ordered too, this box front portrait is the most unconvincing likeness yet. Doesn’t stop me looking forward to the release but it’s a shame Lee Bindings artwork isn’t as consistent as his inner box art work and booklet imagery. Also great to have a ‘firm’ March date from the BBC. Suggests a least three classic releases this year, possible four!
