Sketch To Sea: Initial Lighting Walkthrough

Going back in time a bit in this video to the first time I was able to walk through the boat at night. This is a very important part of the construction process. Since this initial look we have been able to set scenes and have toned down all the lighting to the point where it draws half the amount of electricity that it initially did. Check it out!

    Another great video Sean. Very much appreciate all of the insights, Hull No1 of one of the most cutting edge designs produced obviously has some incredible benefits along with the inevitable challenges. I'm certain that you have been prepared all along for these eventualities. Spare parts availability for a 1 of 1 is obviously always going to be the main timesoak, I assume that lead times will always be significant as presumably re-design work will add into the production time as there is no sense in replacing a failed part with an identical possible failure point. Failure mode and effects analysis will give answers as to the cause of the failure and whilst it may be possible to eliminate causes by altering usage i'm happy to see that everyone involved prefers to travel the path of eliminating the possibility of failure once causalities are established. If we know something could fail even if through incorrect or unspecified usage (not the case in your situation) then always best to re-design to account for the possible failure mode. You mention the Camera "arguably working" and the disappointment in the performance of the main horn loudspeaker on the previous episode, Would you be willing to do an episode on your "snags" now you have had some time to use the systems and equipment aboard? IT would be very interesting to see what is performing / working as intended and what items / systems you may replace / redesign or would change if it were an option with the now available hindsight?

    Thanks for another great video. Too bad you are getting a number of bad comments. Perhaps the cable from the crane contacted that patch on the masthead and delaminated a small section. During the Port Huron Mackinac race many years ago we witnessed a lightening strike on Gordon Lightfoot’s Golden Goose yacht built by Vic Carpenter. There was a very loud crack and then a large puff of smoke right at the masthead. All instruments were blown off the top of the mast and all electrical equipment on board was destroyed. We were on a C&C 53 at the time and we sailed over in light wind and offered assistance. Golden Goose asked us to radio race control and advise them that Golden Goose was dropping out of the race. Luckily their motor started and they were not far from there home port of Goderich Ont. After seeing this it is my guess that you didn’t get hit by lightning. Hope things improve for you.

    1. It's boat 1 of 1 (so far). So it's essentially a prototype/testbed. 2. It's a performance cruiser so stresses are higher and failures will be more common than on a pure cruiser. 3. Great video, thanks for the brief. I have been following since '20, when you started publishing & one thing I noticed - you do not strike me as an idiot... You have done way too much homework through-out the entire build. Mast track - metal fatigue with adhesive behind it; played with too many different types during my time. Should have been a I-Track from the beginning. Looking at the top of the mast where the carbon fabric let go, kind of looks like a torque issue, like it was torn free - a combination of problems? Mast twist & snap when the track let go, like a wet towel snap. All the energy & torque at the end... Like the channel, not leaving as long as you publish. Fair winds....

    • @sketchtosea3750
      @sketchtosea3750 Месяц назад

      Thank you for the comment. That is a good observation about the torque. We think it may have been damaged by the crane strap somehow. The footage we have of it is a time lapse from pretty far away so it is hard to be definitive about it.

    Just a shot in the dark, but given the cumbersome exercise of removing and resetting the mast could that be where the damage occurred? But wouldn’t it have been noticed earlier. The other possibility is that the mast cannot withstand the highly corrosive crap excreted by fruit bats and one was jealous and bombed the mast or was forced into an involuntary voiding of its bowels due to lightning.

    Nice cliffhanger but I would have watched the next episode any way. Few comments, I doubt that the boat is old enough to have corrosion and you would see pitting and corrosion over a wider area, that was a stress fracture and the explanation of the high shock stress closes the loop. Will be interesting to see if the modifications hold out or if that shock stress is just really very high. As for the delamination, lightning will leave quite a distinctive charring pattern and there is clearly no charring in the area that can be seen on the cell phone video, it looks like a product failure, I beleive that the carbon fiber sheets are pre impregnated and the way that seperated and some of the carbon looks like tassels, this might have been an area that had a void. This might well be an isolated incident but if it was me on the boat I would wonder just how isolated. The good news is that the tests came back positive so in would appear that it was an isolated product failure. I would be interested to hear what the final diagnosis is but that would be my guess for now with the information available.

    Another possible explanation for the damage. It's a section with a lamination bonding defect that was knocked loose by the intense sonic pressure wave caused by the close lightning strike.

    The youtubers that suffered double demasting during last years Atlantic crossing, suffered for the same reason. Low wind and high seastate. The mast failed due to a motion similar to breaking someone's neck. A sudden jerk in full opposite lock with the weight of the sails up. I think a direct lighting strike would have left far more damage , unless it was an upward strike of the bolt. Discharge from the sea to the clouds.. Love your boat. Engineering marvel
