Bridging the IT Gap! XstreamCORE - Technical Review
Hello! Is there any disc supporting thunderbolt 4 / USB 4.0? Thanks!
LaCie SSD Pro is a Thunderbolt 3, but it is compatible with thunderbolt 4 / USB 4.0 devices. However there will be no speed difference. Technically Thunderbolt 4 was was made for docking and hubbing solutions, so if you are not planning to use them, thunderbolt 4 does note make any difference.
That orange is hideous. Does it come in another color?
Rugged SSD Pro comes in black, Rugged SSD comes in orange
I agree. I’m not bothered enough not to get it, but it’s time Lacie came out with a variety of colours and denoted the regular from the Pro in a different way. The silicone outer could simply be stamped with PRO. Or have something shiny on the outside.
It's iconic! 😮 Fun fact: La Cie is actually a pun. The parent company is Seagate, and La Cie is French for "The Company". "Firecuda" is one of their trademarks too - presumably a mythical sea monster. 🌊 Of course "it's able to withstand at least 30 minutes of exposure underwater". 🐬🦐🦞🦑🦈🐋 Lol. I just bought the thunderbolt Pro one, by the way.
I scored a used one off BHphoto for $200. Its a well organized bag. Only critique would be to have straps allowing you to flip open the top and have it not fall all the way back. A big benefit of the Dr Bag is that you can set it on the ground, open it with one hand, use it, and nothing inside touches the outside, easy access, no zippers and no time wasted on camera assembly. But with a top lid that flaps all the way back, it can 1) dump anything in the lid pouches that are not zipped close... right onto the ground 2) when you are on a table or camera cart and open it up, it can flap backwards potentially pulling the bag off the edge... Solution: a small adjustable strap on the left and right. Some bags have the straps and its one less headache on shoots.
If you're drop a storage dive in water, you should stay away a pond. The same thing regarding Aa a Crushing Force of Two Tons. If you intend to leave it under a truck, stay away from the roadway
Helpful, thank you
Thank you!

@@mallyjockson SanDisk professional G40 beats the LaCie SSD rugged pro not just in speed but also in ruggedness and construction. I like LaCie don't get me wrong, they are overpriced. I own several of each brand but lately I've been steering towards the professional SSD line of SanDisk. The new blade system is great .
What a bad decision it was to not support encryption on the Pro model.
It is usually better to do it on the software level anyway.
Why is that?@@Ikouy
@@lucasnoritomi-hartwig3928 Hardware level encryption sometimes comes across as a door. Many times, in the case of select SSDs, all one would need to do is remove the hinges off the doors and get in as many hardware solutions simply tell the drive to unlock rather than a handshake. Bitlocker has a similar issue in which the TPM can be overruled and the door just popped open without the key. Software level, such as Bitlocker on a USB drive, tends to rely on a phrase or other method that can't be stored. Like my SD card I have Bitlocker on to enable it I have to use a phrase to unlock it.
Hello. Thanks so much for your video. Do you have any ideas or suggestions on what to do when the audio from the VR-1HD is not sent out to the participants on Zoom? I have selected the VR in my zoom audio settings and I can hear myself talking fine but students cannot hear me. Appreciate your help and happy to talk things privately if you can help further. All my best, Martino
I have a Canon R5 and Id love to record 8k raw on my ninja v but unfortunately I can't find any HDMI to MICROHDMI cable for that. Any recommendations?
We can recommend the ZILR High-Speed HDMI cables as they have 4K 60p and RAW capable cables that will handle the 8K RAW output from the R5 to your Ninja+. They offer two lengths of the required full-size HDMI to micro (D) HDMI cable, a 45cm (part no. ZRHAD01) and a 1m (part no. ZRHAD02). ZILR cables feature secure cable connectors and are hyper-thin and lightweight/flexible.
@@GlobalDistribution cool, thank you!!!
I got one as a gifted and set it up on my pervious phone. There is nothing inside, today after a year, i tried adding it to my app and it was the recovery key. Is there a way to reset it? I don’t have the recovery key.
Unfortunately due to the security technology featured in the ArmorLock if you have not been granted access via an original user/setup then without the recovery key it is impossible to reset the unit for reconfiguration. You could try contacting support Western Digital in case anything has changed, but they will most likely confirm it's impossible to reset without the recovery key information.
So does the mobile app (that allows bluetooth allow the user to use the files on android and windows 11 interchangeably without having to format and delte files to talk to both operating systems? Usually once formated the external drive windows files cant be read or seen when direct connected to android phone. I think you would have to format deleting the files, correct? Basically wondering if the mobile app bypasses this and allows both operating systems to utilize the video files.
bump this question
Perfect.
We suspect that the Ninja 5 plus 8k doesn't entertain the bmpcc 6k & bmpcc 6k pro being upscaled to 8k. Sadly however the Ninja V+ (8k) doesn't appear to entertain Blackmagic's BRAW format at 8k and doesn't look to be upgraded with these additional features anytime soon such as in future models such as the Ninja VI plus! Unfortunately ProRes within this configurment is only restricted to 4k 120fps! I would be happy to stand corrected whether this isn't entirely accurate, cheers!
i think you've just invented a new youtube category - a hands on review without having hands on the product you're reviewing.
Why HDMI cable are using for 8k
I love yellow color and really into that G-Drive Armorlock design but why is it so big? It has same speed and durability of the way smaller G-Drive and doesn't have that thunderbolt speed of the slightly smaller G-Drive Pro, I don't gonna share my drive and just going to back up my personal life and small business stuffs, SSD can be smaller than HDD but it is larger than the HDD, not metal too, is it clumbersome to use, should I get one because I like the design? Hope they make a smaller one with same design!
Why Armorlock is bigger than this when speed and ruggedness are same and just with a hardware encryption differences?
What if the QR code get scratched off from day to day use and the app didn't get update many years later? Can you turn off the encryption and just use the drive like a normal SSD because I want to get one not because of the encryption but because I like yellow color and the drive looks good with the yellow accent, not many drive with usb c has yellow color! :) Why its so much bigger than the other G-Drive SSD that you run over with a car? It seem like that drive has same hardware durability too.
I was watching a review and they made the point that while the bag is collapsible Sharp did such a good job with a strong Velcro it can be hard to take the side panels off. I like that it just shows the quality and time someone spent to design it.
This looks like a great bag, but too large for airline travel. The bag collapses into the shipping box, but that won't help me when I want to fill the bag with gear for air travel.
Hello, since any battery has a limited lifespan, my question is: when the battery is obsolete, will there be a way to replace it?
Hi Arnaud - good question! The Rugged Boss is sadly no longer available, but the battery isn't user accessible. For anyone who already has a Rugged Boss the best thing to do would be to contact LaCie support if the battery does start to dwindle. They're normally pretty great at sorting things out.
Just got mine, 2 actually. I bought two of these bags, they got here today and I am very, very dissappointed. This is what happens with both of the bags I received: 1. The top lid magnet hardly works 2. The top lid is almos impossible to close, as the zips are in a very akward position, and require to carefully align top and sides every time you want to do something so silly as to "close the damn bag" 3. The weight of the bags is almost as much as my previous bags WITH THE CAMERAS IN THEM, so they are extremely heavy. Impossible to work with whithout a trolley once full of actual gear. 4. The zips are very bad, most zips open from both ends, like the worse zips you've encountered ever. 5. The oversized clips and zips are totaly overkill, if the whole thing was working, I may overlook the weight and size of the arrangements, but once the whole kit weighs a ton, nothing extra makes sense. 6. There are no dividers at all. Evend the cheapest camera bag comes with some basic dividers, forget about this one. 7. Too many pencil spaces. It almost feels like when they did not know what to do with the available space they added pencil loops, The only pencil like thing I carry on my shoots is a lens cleaner and my apple pen, may sometimes, be a single black marker or even a red and blue ones for my clap obard, and that is it, Who the hell needs 15 pencil spaces in a camera bag? 9. May be all the above is wrong, because I don't know how to use this stuff, but then again, a bliding manual would have helped!!! 10- The Overall experience is that of a chinese 10 dollar bag I purchased 2 weeks ago, it fits a full rig and it does what expected, and, at least, they did not overpromised, overcharged and under delivered as Shape did.. Well, as you can see, not much to say, if you need images and proof, just request and I will post a video of the unboxing, that will even make it worse. Hope you fix this soon for other customers. Best. Francis
That is the almost EXCACT same problems I have! My top lid cracked indside before i used it, because the material inside is very fragile or cheap plastic. Returned mine yesterday and are waiting for my refund...
So cool, just what I need to keep my gear organized in one place! For my needs this is better than any hard case I was looking at.
How you liking it? I just ordered one.
The one thing I wish this bag had was the ability for the lid to stay vertical when opened like the Arri bags so the pouches were easier to use one handed
Bought it. Use it. Love it.

What I’d like to know as someone whose never used prores, in terms of smaller file sizes to work with in either premier or final cut, is it worth paying thousands in aud$ for the ssd card for the atomos, preferably for my taste the Angelbird Atomos Master Caddy 2tb - costing 3k$ Or is prores not that much of an improvement to spend on an ssd card and just record internally on the r5?
If you're shooting with the R5 and a Ninja V or V+ then you'll be able to capture 12-bit ProRes RAW when recording on an SSD in your Atomos device. This will give you significantly greater image latitude and flexibility in Premiere Pro and FCPX while also working efficiently with your computer's CPU. If you use a Ninja V+ then you'll also be able to capture up to 8K 30p from the R5. Your Atomos device will come with a single Master Caddy II that you can fit with a 2.5" SSD. However, make sure you select your relevant Atomos device from the list at www.atomos.com/compatible-drives and only purchase an SSD that is approved and suited for your intended use. In terms of capacity, a 2TB SSD is a significant premium, and it's cheaper to buy multiple SSDs of a smaller capacity (such as 500GB), so really depends on how long you need to record for in a single take, or in rapid succession. It's super quick to swap SSDs during a shoot. The Angelbird AtomX SSDmini is nicely compact and will provide recording capabilities for anything you can throw at it, so maybe just consider smaller capacity drives to save on costs. In addition to ProRes RAW you also have the option to record to regular ProRes (video) which is less CPU heavy during the edit but still offers a better quality post workflow and post efficiency than the camera internal codecs will provide. It's also a more consistent bit rate, whereas ProRes RAW is variable based on the complexity of the sensor data from the camera - however this means ProRes RAW files can end up being smaller than ProRes video files. On the Ninja V+ you have H.265 as a built-in option too for quick turnaround or to significantly reduce your file size/storage requirements. This can be a paid-for license add on to a Ninja V.
@@GlobalDistribution wow, thank you so much for the effort you've put into this reply! i just did some quick research and the mini ssd 2tb costs 1k$ compared to the larger non mini 1.5k$ version. So already you've saved me 500$ thank you! I do prefer having 1 ssd card over a few for the reason that i dont enjoy carrying too much on location and also not having to interrupt shooting to replace them when full.
the only thing still questioning in my mind, is for 4k hq recording on prores, how quickly will that take up on storage. i know from the Deaf Director's youtube channel that 8k pro res puts out 20gb on just 10 seconds of recording time. So 4k hq prores id think would be half that? in which case shooting prores for 1 minute would be 60gb, 10 minutes would be 600bg. filming all day would be impracticable. Do you know what the actual 4k prores file size is? if its anything close to my estimation, would proress not be impractical?
@@andrelecozvideographer9030 ProRes is always going to take up more space, but the amount depends on your compression, frame rate, and how long you record for. This is where having a second drive comes in handy so you can offload one using something like YoYotta without losing too much time in the process. You'll probably fill a 500GB SSD in 30-40 minutes. There's also another benefit to using two drives: if you lose or damage one then you don't risk the entire project.
@@GlobalDistribution i see. At the same time, a 2tb SSD giving me potentially 2 hours would require me to have at least 3-5 2tb SSD cards for a full day of filming. Thats 3-5k$ in SSD cards 0o... not including second day or more shoots where i would have need to overnight transfer anywhere from 6-10 terabytes of data in order to empty SSD cards for the next shooting day. I dont think its possible to transfer that much data that quickly.
Fantastic job Richard. Really informative and interesting.
Thanks, Charles! Glad you like it.
Great work overall, just don’t get why you chose to shoot in the PAL 25p format especially if your end delivery was RUclips. Would have much preferred to see these in 24p (24fps) for RUclips presentation. Would have made for a more filmic look. As is, they have a very video quality to them.
Thanks for the comments! Glad you liked the films. We shot at 25 fps to give it more of a video game feel - playing into her rebooting or reloading every time she’s knocked unconscious. But we totally agree that shooting something similar at 24 fps would give a lovely cinematic look. Particularly with the MONSTRO sensor.
You would see zero difference between 24 and 25p. In the UK, it’s standard to shoot at 25.
The audio is horribly distorted.
I can see why RED loses out to Arri.
How is that?
@Simon C are you really compairing a 6000 USD cam to a 54000 EUR cam? xD xD xD please tell me the diffrence between THE SUICIDE SQUAD and BIRDS OF PRAY. if you find any flaws in comparision to the other... let me know
What lenses did you use on these? Same glass for each camera?
Hey Barry! We used Sigma Cine lenses on all three shoots. PL mounts for the MONSTRO and GEMINI editions, and EF for the KOMODO. With the KOMODO we shot with a 20mm all the way through. The others used both the 35mm and 85mm.
@@GlobalDistribution Thanks!
GD, what about the Atomos Shogun 7, has it been abandoned? is the Ninja V + a better option for the future? is there a new firmware update coming for the Shogun 7?
The Shogun gives you multiple SDI inputs and camera switching, along with more screen real estate so it's still definitely a powerful product. All depends on what you need it do and the style of shooting you're working with. We've got a Shogun 7 on the FS5 in our studio, for example.
@@GlobalDistribution Thanks for responding. I am a documentarian and looking for a monitor, I love the look of the Shogun 7 but the Ninja V+ looks like a better monitor and has more features for a better shoot. Especially with the new S1h coming with 8K RAW, which would you buy now?
If you're on the go a lot then the Ninja V+ Pro Kit is probably the best option. You'd get RAW over HDMI (which the S1H does currently at 5.9K) and you'd get SDI RAW in there as well just in case. It also does RAW up to 8K 30p. It's smaller of course, so if you need the screen size and more inputs then go down the Shogun route. Check out Atomos' compatibility pages just to be sure: www.atomos.com/compatible-cameras?product=ninja-v-plus
@@GlobalDistribution Thanks for taking the time.
What ssd will we need for 8k raw? With an R5?
Check out the Angelbird AtomX SSDmini - that should support 8K RAW nicely: www.angelbird.com/prod/atomx-ssdmini-by-angelbird-2110/
@@GlobalDistribution thats the one that I have but it writes 500 m/s max speed while 8k footage is known to need more than double of that at least for the R5, atomos people told me that the firmware update will be released by end of year so guess well see..
@@prskyviews You should be all good then. Atomos has rated the Angelbird SSDminis up to 8K 30p RAW. You can check out their chart here: www.atomos.com/compatible-drives?product=ninja-v-plus

This looks really soft compared to the gemini and monstro video - is it out of focus?
Could be down to shooting wide open on a 20mm lens with no stabilisation, or YT compression. We're making some clips available for download on the Four Eighths website soon so do feel free to grab those and compare close up.
the big problem for atomos is that more and more cameras can record very high bit rates internally, or even directly on an SSD ... all without going through an Atomos. hence the 8K ^^ otherwise they were dead, you have to go faster than the majority of boxes.
I'm always confused about the middle ground when it comes to resolution and fps .... 8K30 - 4K120 - where's 6K60 ? Especially on cameras that already shoot 6K like S1H and ZCAM F6 etc.
Good question
And people say the image quality of the Komodo 6K sucks. This looks just fine to me.
I also don't get it.The Komodo anamorphic videos are also crazy good
Glad you like it! We'll be making some of the source footage available for people to play with soon too.
Lighting is key. You can have an $100,000 camera, but if you cinematography is not on point your image quality will suck.
In fact, no one says Komodo image quality sucks, except you.
Will HDMI 2.0 cables be fast enough for 8k or 4k120? Does the V+ have HDMI 2.1?
Most HDMI cabling is rated for compressed consumer video signals so you would probably run into some difficulty with those either way. In terms of 8K and 4K 120p these are all RAW signals, so not rendered video pixels and therefore it's a different story. However, it's still recommended to use a high-grade HDMI cable such as the AtomFlex range as these are guaranteed to handle the RAW data signal. Again, cheap HDMI cables designed for domestic use will likely not be suitable to carry the data signal efficiently. If a cable is not suitable you'll simply just get 'No Input' reported on the Atomos unit. The important thing here is compressed, uncompressed and RAW signals. The AtomFlex range is guaranteed to handle RAW data signals as well as uncompressed video signals up to 10-bit 4K 60p.
The real question is how long before the R5 overheats even when recording to the Ninja V+ without card inside. According to @DeafDirector findings on his RUclips channel I’m kind of skeptical
That's definitely a good question... from previous experience, if the camera isn't recording internally you have a signficantly improved heat performance. We don't have an R5 in house, but if we can get hold of one we'll run a test and share the results.
