    Ben Turpin mostly retired when sound film became the dominant form. But if there is one good thing about Ben's voice that would have helped in a sound film career was that he sounded exactly like people imagined he would. Many silent film actors didn't sound like what people thought they did. Some romantic/swashbuckling leads had some grating or high-pitched voices that people never thought they would have had. But some actors were perfect. Laurel and Hardy sounded exactly like what people thought they would. Laurel the dimwitted Englishman with a mild southern UK accent and Hardy as the loud, childishly bossy man with a subdued southern US accent.

    I'm a big fan of these Educational comedies. Any chance you can track down the complete Fast and Furious with Lige Conley? The print that's on RUclips is not complete. Growing up in L.A. I used to go to the famed Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax Ave. in Los Angeles- this is when it was run by the original owner. They would play the complete Fast and Furious and I was lucky enough to catch it twice. For one thing, the film as its posted on RUclips, is missing the opening sequence- and also, a nice scene with stop-motion animation, plus a couple of other things. I figure if anyone could track down the complete print, it would be you. Keep me posted!

    • @josephblough4403

      I will check around and see what I can find regarding FAST AND FURIOUS/Lige Conley, and I will get back to you. I will contact the Library of Congress and I will check at the British Film Institute. FYI this process of checking requires response from the various parties, so this might take a number of days until I get a definite answer.

    • @josephblough4403
      @josephblough4403 3 месяца назад

      Search RUclips for "Lige Conley - Fast & Furious (1924)". This posting looks like the full version, with stop-motion animation about 7.5 minutes into the film.

    • @barrysiegel131
      @barrysiegel131 3 месяца назад

      @@josephblough4403 It's not complete. There are 3 versions of Fast & Furious on RUclips- 2 of them run about 14 minutes and then there's the one that runs 19 minutes, but the 19 minute one is just a slowed down version of the 14 minute one- not a frame more- no extra footage. Here's what's missing: The opening scene! The film starts with Lige in a very wooded area making pancakes on a pan with a little fire (perhaps a can of sterno underneath the pan). The joke is, he's fully dressed in suit and tie. Who goes camping dressed like that? Then the camera pulls back and you see he's actually in the display window on the hardware store where he works giving a demonstration. THEN, he stands up and holds up a sign that reads "samples of the pancakes inside." When you first see him "camping" and then the camera pulls back to show he's just in the shop window- that completes the joke. I''m well aware of the stop motion animated egg sequence, but there is another scene- that's even longer, with a cat, trying to catch a mouse on the counter (all stop motion). It's kind of a hickery-dickery-doc kind of scene with the mouse darting in and out and around a clock that's also sitting on the counter. The scene cuts away and then comes back with one more brief scene of the animated mouse jumping off the counter and getting away- the cat looks dismayed. (This final bit is brief.) You'll notice that there is a bit of a jump cut of continuity between reel one and reel two. I can't remember what goes in that place, but when I saw the film twice- there was no jump cut you would notice. After my friend and I saw the film for the first time, he bought an 8mm copy of it and we both noted the missing parts from his print (the same print that's posted on RUclips). It's my understanding that when the original owner of the Silent Movie Theater closed, he sold his collection to David Packard (of Hewlett-Packard fame). When he died, his collection was donated to UCLA Film Archive, so I suppose they have the complete 16mm print of this film.

    • @josephblough4403
      @josephblough4403 3 месяца назад

      @@barrysiegel131 Thanks for clarifying all that. I checked and the Library of Congress has a 16mm copy of the film (the British Film Institute did not). I am trying to get an idea of the running time for the one held by the LoC, so I am waiting for a reply (they may not be able to supply that info until the film is actually ordered, I don’t know). In any case, it sounds like the item is worth getting. Even if it’s incomplete, it may contain scenes which are missing from the other versions. Using a video editor and all the versions available, a fully version of the film might be created. I just recently put in an order with the LoC, and I don’t like to tax the LoC with two orders at once, so I will include FAST AND FURIOUS in my next order. It takes literally a few months to receive the films, so it won’t be for 3 or 4 months before I possibly get the FAST AND FURIOUS film in my hands. Just letting you know it will be a long wait. But, I will indeed get whatever the LoC has for FAST AND FURIOUS and post it on RUclips. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. I will try to keep you informed when I eventually place the order.

In my opinon, it's Lyge Conley's best film, and also one of the best silent comedies that Educational produced.
