New Voxel Engine Reveal - Crystal Islands Experiment
Follow me on Twitter for more updates: ProgrammerLin
This scene is composed entirely of voxels. What started as an innocent attempt at increasing the view distance evolved into a 4 month quest to achieve not only that, but rewrite a brand new voxel engine from the ground up that would feature:
- An 8x (512 cubic) detail increase with animation support, high compression rates, and per-voxel material attributes
- Fast collision detection that physics and player walking will utilize
- Full fracture and mutation of objects
- Improved path traced global illumination that features 5 bounces from the sun, atmosphere and all emissive objects
- A powerful asset pipeline that can utilize Quix...

Water Wheels, Motor Concept, and Dynamic Object Building
Somebody printed RUclips comments on these water wheels... Follow me on Twitter for updates: ProgrammerLin This video is showcasing creating dynamic rigid body objects that update in real time, react to water, can be destroyed, and can have constraints attached to them. A nice UI will help make this easier to work with. I considered having a separate in-game window where you don't h...
Water Physics + Custom Voxel Boats, Rigid Bodies & Destruction
Follow me on Twitter for updates: ProgrammerLin One-way coupling between rigid bodies and water has been implemented. Buoyancy is simulated volumetrically, and the fluid velocity field is sampled where the objects collide with it. Because the coupling is just fluid-on-objects, air does not factor into water displacement and the splashes seen are just visual, so moving objects themse...
Voxel Water Physics - Waterfalls, Rivers and Tunnels
Follow me on Twitter for more updates: ProgrammerLin It took a bit longer than expected, but the fluid simulation design from a few months ago has been implemented in our voxel project. It uses the same cell/particle hybrid method and is therefore fully volumetric with no height range limit beyond the 0-4095 y world boundary! It will flow through buildings, fall down into caves, flo...
Voxel Summer Forest Meadows

Follow me on Twitter for updates: ProgrammerLin Today we take a walk through an improved world featuring butterflies, new flowers, improved scene composition, improved terrain gen, and the return of falling leaves. I really appreciate everyone's support and patience. There will likely be one or two more videos before the big video I've been promising because my feature list for it h...
The most fun I've had working with voxels
Follow me on Twitter for updates: ProgrammerLin I know I said the announcement video was next, but I really wanted to share this one. Upon completing the core of the building system, I actually got hooked on it and spent a solid day just having fun. Combined with re-watching The Office simultaneously, it made for the best day of voxel dev I've ever experienced. The entirety of the b...
Destroying some Voxel Pumpkins with my Pet Wolf

Follow me on Twitter for updates: ProgrammerLin This is the final installment of the mini videos teasing some of the features I've been working on, this time including object fracturing, a WIP voxel character animation system, new path tracing (still working on the denoiser), day/night, some new terrain generation that gives me more control, and improved scene composition. Next vide...
Volumetric Terrain Fracturing - Detail Enhancement Preview #2
Follow me on Twitter for updates: ProgrammerLin Following the previous video, this short clip showcases another feature made possible to the enhancements the engine has undergone: volumetric fracturing of terrain and objects. A more extensive video showcasing what this enables will follow shortly. Thanks everyone for all your kind comments and support :)
Animated Voxel Trees - Detail Enhancement Preview
Follow me on Twitter for updates: ProgrammerLin This a showcase of an experimental enhancement to the engine that finally enables trees to blow in the wind. It's part of a larger video that will come in the near future, showcasing other new improvements and features including water physics, which was also teased recently.
This Real-Time 3D Fluid Sim Runs on One CPU Core.
Follow me on Twitter for updates: ProgrammerLin This was a research project that aimed to find a real-time realistic fluid simulation that was able to handle moderately complex scenes without taxing the GPU horribly or wiping out the entire CPU. It's a hybrid lagrangian-eulerian method based on the work by "Hu, Yuanming and Fang, Yu and Ge, Ziheng and Qu, Ziyin and Zhu, Yixin and Pr...
Voxels + Physics = A fun way to dig
Don't worry: we don't rotate our voxels here, because we know better. The whole approach is made possible thanks to a unified voxel framework. The world, physics processing, ray tracing (all of the objects are ray traced), lighting, procedural generation, sound tracing and collision detection all use the same voxel data, allowing for some nice optimizations. The entirety of the collision detect...
Exploring an Infinite Voxel Forest
Follow me on Twitter for more frequent updates: ProgrammerLin The last few months of development have been about taking our small, fixed voxel scene and laying the foundation for a procedural world to expand infinitely. This simple forest walk is the last one we'll take, friends, for next up is going to be some long-awaited gameplay. There are some things I'd like to improve of cour...
Ray Traced Reverb, Wind and Sound Occlusion (Path Traced Voxel Project)
The year is 2002 and you just installed the new Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card on your XP machine for some revolutionary EAX audio. What a time to be alive. Today, we bring some of that excitement back with RTX reverb, wind and sound occlusion using OpenAL. Twitter: ProgrammerLin
Path Traced Voxel Project - it all started with a single arch
After adding glass, making path tracing noiseless and run 20x faster (60fps HD!), and adding experimental building tools, I created a single arch and couldn't pull myself away for the next 3 weeks. I can't wait to see what real artists can do. ProgrammerLin
It kills me that the engine never saw the light of day Whether microvoxel or the low poly voxels
No.9 Esther’s Waltz
Did you ever finish this? Im currently cooking up an engine which has renderpipelines for voxels, polygons and combined with math and physics models from real life converted to code to simulate real voxel weather effects. It works.
+ much, much more.
sounds cool, can you show anything?
@trm245 yes, I am planning to involve some sort of marketing strategy with videos when more modules cooperate. I dont want to show too much, for legal reasons. But I can show succeeded builds, parts of code and how the renderer performs with current modules.
Hell yeah
what is the point in using voxels at this level of detail?
The smaller the voxels the better.
not another danii situation :(
Nearing reality great, how small are the voxel?
How does it blend materials and have small storage
Anybody else waiting on an update in 2025?
This scene is entirely of voxels!!!????!?!
I can't imagine how much RAM this scene might use if every voxel stored as separate object (the only method comes to my mind to optimize that is SDF interpolation)
One day, the legend will come back to us.
Every month I come back to see if he's posted but nothing :(
I wonder...
Hello
What if it's the VOXEL project by John Lin? I know his channel was dead for 3 years now. But, what if...??
What do you mean?
Oh, do you mean that John Lin is working on the game called Voxile (previously Voxlands)? I don't think so because he has his own game in the works called Sunheart.
I really hope this game was not lost to time
are you ok?
Where did this go? This is 3 years old. The potential for survival builder games to have flowing water is insane. Valheim, Enshrouded, Dune, Conan.... imagine water wheels, aqueducts, water falls. At this point Id take minecraft water over set water hights.
does anyone else randomly think about this project and get really sad that's its been 3 years...
Four... it's been four years.
Let him cook!
cuando saldrá el juego?''''''''
John Lin! Wake Up! Where are you?
any updates?
1 year later since I last visited this channel, nothing changed. I don't think this guy will ever finish this project or make it public/paid
Well, the game and company titles are still in good standing, so it's probably safe to say that the game project is in good standing, as well.
this guy has probably been poached by Valve and all this is going to show up in HLX, not his own game
It's really amazing
Will this be released at some point?
This is very impressive man please keep going !
Hell yeah cant wait!
Three years, hope your doing well
Dude just died
crazy, nice work John.
Know when the painting is complete. Let this be born.
Real Life HD Voxel Physic ???
this looks amazing I can't wait to see where this goes
Keep cooking bro 🙏🏼
Best looking game i've ever seen in my whole life
I still hold on hope that this project will go somewhere. I still think about it every so often
same here
I can't believe it's been 3 years
Do you know what happened to him? I want to create something similar to this in Rust, and I've been trying to find John to ask questions about how all of this works... but everything, RUclips, Twitter, GitHub contributions, all ended 3 years ago. Now I'm just wondering if he is okay, or even alive. This looked so promising.
He's alive, he's commented on things that don't pertain to this game. Before Twitter likes went private he was active on the account liking gfx related things. I assume he still is active on that acc to this day. He just went radio silent on the project's state entirely He won't say what's going on with it but I would hazard a guess at it being too much for one man and he got burnt out. No matter how talented Mixing c# (for our benefit - whether it's modding or otherwise and a pain for him) and c++ probably was a massive headache. It's a shame as it kills me that this is the only thing I've seen that looks like this (whether micro voxel or the lower res voxels)
This is unreal, i cant beleve this tech was done by one person, you must be one of the best programmers out there hope your project got bought by a nice company
Cant believe this guy made projects this impressibe that make me insanely excited now that ive discovered them Only to discover he's completely vanished 3 years ago, damn Edit: To note, I know he's showed some activity elsewhere and hearting comments as of a year ago, and he's probably just cooking in the background lol. Would still be nice to see some updates.
This is so cool! I can't believe how many of these you are rendering simultaneously. What rig are you using? I'd love to see a performance monitor or an FPS overlay while you're doing this.
This is amazing. I can't even imagine how much work went into this.
That's amazing! Please, make Noita 3d!
amazing
Continu ur chanel, it is fire
bro i miss you, i often think about your projects please come back
