Was Gandalf Ever Afraid? (LOTR)
Was Gandalf Ever Afraid? A Study of Fear, Courage, and Character in Tolkien’s Legendarium
Gandalf, one of the most beloved and enigmatic figures in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, is often portrayed as a beacon of wisdom and strength. Yet beneath his wise and stoic exterior lies a character who knows fear deeply-fear not only of failure but of his own limitations, the forces of darkness, and the responsibility he bears for the fate of the world. Far from diminishing him, Gandalf’s fear highlights his true courage and underscores Tolkien's broader themes of humility, resilience, and moral strength.

Nazgûl vs Dementors Who Wins?
Просмотров 1452 месяца назад
Between the fearsome Nazgûl and the soul-chilling Dementors, which is scarier and stronger? Let’s dive into a (hypothetical) showdown to find out. We’ll need to assess this in terms of who is scarier, and, of course, who would actually win if these two nightmare-creatures faced off. Scare Factor: Nazgûl vs. Dementors Dementors, the floating soul-suckers of the Wizarding World, have one job: to ...
Did Rings of Power Get Gandalf's origin, right?

Did Amazon's Rings of Power portray the origin of Gandalf correctly? No, not at all. Not even a bit. Amazon's Rings of Power portrays the origin of Gandalf with notable deviations from Tolkien's established lore. In the original texts, Gandalf arrives in Middle-earth during the Third Age, not the Second. Additionally, Gandalf is portrayed as having a clear understanding of his mission from the ...
Unraveling the One Ring's Unique Impact on Bilbo and Frodo.
Просмотров 1773 месяца назад
Why did the One Ring affect Bilbo and Frodo in different ways? Well in the first place, distance. Bilbo, living far from Mordor in the Shire, was less affected by the direct influence of Sauron. Sauron's attention was scattered, and he wasn’t actively searching for the Ring while Bilbo possessed it. In contrast, Frodo was much closer to Mordor for much of his journey, and as Sauron became aware...
How Sauron Discovered Gollum's Secret about the One Ring?

How did Sauron know that Gollum once had the One Ring? In "The Fellowship of the Ring," Gandalf speaks of Mordor's dark pull: ‘Yes, to Mordor,’ said Gandalf. ‘Alas! Mordor draws all wicked things, and the Dark Power was bending all its will to gather them there. The Ring of the Enemy would leave its mark, too, leave him open to the summons. And all folk were whispering then of the new Shadow in...
What If Merry and Pippin Weren't in the Fellowship of the Ring?

Tolkien was a meticulous and logical writer, and his reasons for crafting the story the way he did become clear upon analysis. Let’s explore this alternate-universe theory to see where it leads us. What contributions did Merry and Pippin make during the War of the Ring? Quite a bit. Merry: 1) He encouraged the Ents to attack Isengard, which dismantled Saruman’s power and ultimately aided the Ro...

boromir>gimli ??
Borimer was taller, although gimli was stronger. borimer fighting with a sword would be more affecting in a big fight, gimli was more affective against many orcs because they were not good enough to outrange him
So too did Celebrian, the late wife of Elrond Earendilion. It is alluded to, that she may have been s*xually assaulted during her travail amongst the Orcs.
Trash channel and click bait title
Galandriel is an elf Gandalf is immortal,a god, normally Gandalf is a spirit he can’t be killed .
Sauron also knew fear and that is repeated more than once in the books.
Good point, in facto he overplayed his hand after seeing Aragorn in the palantir
Good video.
Tbabks so much. I try to keep the actual content as close to canon as possible. Much appreciated
nice explanation, just please dont ever use a squeaky brake noise in the background ever again.
Haha ok, noted.
The video states "Gandalf believed he could resist the ring's temptation." Actually, he was very wary of taking the ring, as was Galadriel. Moreover, the ring would not have "tempted" Gandalf; rather, it would have done whatever was necessary to return to it's maker, Sauron.
That is true, but it would have tempted anybody to use it, thereby trying to oppose Sauron, but ultimately getting it close to him so he could reclaim it. Something like that I believe. Gandalf probably went through a lot of internal struggles regarding the ring.
What’s with the text to speech
What's with it how? I think its quite good, specially some of the newer videos.
Who cares? It would be pretty boring for anybody who’s read the books if they stuck to the books exactly. What’s wrong with a reimagined retelling? If you don’t like this version, just return to Tolkien’s version and enjoy reading it once more.
„That Olórin [Gandalf], as was possible for one of the Maiar, had already visited Middle-earth and had become acquainted not only with the Sindarin Elves and others deeper in Middle-earth, but also with Men, is likely, but nothing is (has yet been) said of this.“ (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Peoples of Middle-earth - Part 2, Chapter XIII, "Last Writings, p.381")
Great video but lower the volume of the music and or choose a better tine
Hi thanks for the feedback. Yes I know. I am going to redo this one it's horrible with the music
It’s called creative license. Who cares? 🤷♂️
Haha actually a lot ofnpeople care. But I get what you mean
Why would you think people wouldn't care? One of the most beloved stories ever written with millions of diehard fans gets a Billion $ series made and those life-long fans get all excited about seeing the books brought to life on the screen, maybe even buy a Prime subscription specially for it, only to discover that it's actually a totally different story? With nothing to do with the books other than a few similar names. Imagine if you got really stoked about a new Iron Man film, bought your cinema ticket, then the film was about 'Tony Mark', the inventor of the Ironing board, which he built on a caravan holiday with a box of scraps. Then when you asked 'what the heck was that all about? It was nothing to do with Iron Man' the studio just said 'yeah well we've got a creative licence'. 😆
Such a dogmatic and bizarre viewpoint, you’re saying any book adaptation to another medium like TV can’t deviate from the sacred canon of the source text? Why can’t another storyteller interpret it differently through another media and give us a fresh take on a modern classic? The same way a musician can cover someone else’s Song but bring their own artistic style and voice to it. Why be so rigid? Hate to break it to you kid, but it’s all made up. It’s not a documentary that needs to adhere to facts. Once again, who cares? 😂
@@benjordan8123I think the adaptation Peter Jackson did was good, he deviated quite a bit from the original story, but with respect. ROP totally mangeled what Tolkien wrote into something unrecognisable. I think there is a line somewhere, ROP crossed it.
@@benjordan8123 You're missing the point entirely, and I write this as someone who actually enjoyed the Amazon series. But it's totally understandable to me why people would be annoyed by it. You say 'adaption', but the story told in the Rings of Power series is almost entirely different from the Tolkien story, the characters are different (yes they re-use names but the actual characters are not the same), the storyline is different, the timeline is different, the events are different. If it's 'all just made up' like you say, then why tie it to the Tolkien stories at all? Why not just make a totally new fantasy story? Someone 'made up' the recipe for a Spagetthi Cabanora, but that doesn't mean you can serve someone a turd and say it's a Spagetthi Cabanora just because someone made up the original idea! It should still bear some resemblance to the original text, particularly given this isn't some ancient story that's been retold on stage and screen tens of times. Funnily enough, by far the best thing about the series is the intelligent deceptiveness of Sauron, which is literally the only character trait they actually kept from Tolkien's work 😆

Dude this is dead on for Tom Shippey, was he a guest or is this AI?
Haha it's AI. I don't let AI write the scripts though. But this voice is great. I think it suits Tolkien. Thanks for the comment!
If the author had not included them he would have made the story work some other way🙂↔️
I guess that is true, the point is how Tolkien used even minor characters in a big way. Thanks for the comment!
Excellent analysis about a subject I've never thought of.
Agree with most of what you said. But disagree about the Scouring of the Shire. They would have been in the Shire and would have fought the takeover and what happened there.
Hi Margaret. hmmm that's what I meant to say. I'll watch it again, maybe I made a mistake. Thanks for the comment.
You forgot, the two took the eye of Sauron off Sam and Frodo
Oh my word you are correct, in general them, and the rest of the Fellowship served this purpose and did a good job! Thanks for the comment!
Gandalf would’ve absolutely spanked Galadriel’s ass. 😂
Galadriel was not a sword wielding warrior, so no, but due to her teaching from the Maia Melian, maybe she could banish it, but since the Maia Gandalf couldn't I doubt it so the winner is the Balrog !!
Galadriel is not a warrior.
Source?
@pedroluizb you're not serious, r u ?
In The Silmarillion, Tolkien describes Galadriel as "the mightiest and fairest of all the Elves that remained in Middle-earth." She is especially tall, standing at an impressive height of six foot four. Thanks for the comment, she was compared to her uncle Feanor. That says a lot.
@MiddelEarthQA-zv3tc there's not one passage in any source material that depicts Galadriel in warrior mode. Don't warp adjectives to suit your agenda. She is depicted as mighty, etc, but that does not mean warrior. She was formidable, surely that's enough.
The Ai makes the pictures it wasn't directly meant to be like that
Did anyone defeat a Balrog without dying in the process?
Yes Echtelion killed gothmog the lord of balrogs
@@MiddelEarthQA-zv3tc Echthelion died to kill gothmog
That's true, some earlier drafts have different things happening. But cannon wise I think you are correct. No balrog slayer survived.
Gandalf was not a elf, just an istar, and he defeated the balrog known as Durin's Bane by himself at a very old age. He did die but was sent back to middle earth by the valar. He had one of the elven rings of power. I think theyll be showing how and when do the dwarves wake up this balrog, hidden under the mountain.
@@pierreder1368 There was a first age elf that died killing a Balrog and was also resurrected by Ilúvatar. So Gandalf wasnt the first that happened to he even came back more powerful just like Gandalf. The Witchking would literally run away when confronted by the guy in the third age
Great character, sadly underestimated because of her gender. It was the whole reason she went to middle-earth in the first place. Arguably 3rd on the list of powerful Noldor.
Agreed, Tolkien spoke very highly of her.
@@carloscrecelius9597 may I ask how you think her gender has her underestimated? I'm genuinely interested as this is not my perception.
@@MiddelEarthQA-zv3tc typical male attitudes towards beautiful females, I suppose. The average male is motivated by the urge to conquer and dominate, especially at the time the books were written, and female characters were almost exclusively wives, mothers or objects of desire. Prevailing attitudes of the times, I suppose. A dominant female character wasn't attractive to the majority of readers.
Galadriel from The Rings of Power: hold my beer 🙃🙃🙃
🤣🤣exactly
I have never seen even a single accurate portrayal of Galadriel. She keeps her hair --- all of it --- braided. If she had any long, loose, flowing hair, she wouldn't have needed to unbraid it in order to cut three strands for Gimli. And, yes, I agree that Galadriel could defeat a Balrog.
This is a good point. I'll see if I can make some images with her in warrior hair mode
Just because she had it braided at that moment doesn't mean it always is. At the time she was giving them their farewell gifts, she had just met them on the river- that means traveling, and women would usually put their up when they travelled, and could leave it down at home. I think any of the artwork I've seen of her as far as style goes is fine. To me, the color is always wrong.
@@agirlnamedmichael1670 And yet she is never, but never, portrayed with the hair all braided.
@@margaretalbrecht4650 Why should it be? It was braided in that one instant. Most images of her are general and not specifically from the Fellowship farewell from Lorien.
Thanks for comment, hair color? It's a little difficult to get that exactly right. How would you describe it? MAybe I can have a go to get her hair right
So is that a no?
Yes, definitely NO. IT did not happen in the books. Book Gandalf is badass.
lol my thoughts exactly
We don't here of Melkor anywhere else besides of the mention in the silmirillion which leads me to think he is really Lucifer.
Melkor is all over the Silmarillion. But he is soon named Morgoth. He is as close to lucifer as possible.
I know it's Melkor 😊
Could Eru be Lucifer
No, defintaely NO
Galadriel would not be possible to kill a Balrog alone... This will answer your question !
That is probably true, although some of her very close relatives had killed balrogs, although they also died. Still this is a valid point. I have actually been meaning to update this video after all the research I have done I know hold the opinion that Gandalf was quite a bit more powerfull.
What makes you think she can't?? Remember that her peers Elrond and Glorfindel couldn't join the fellowship because their power is too great to conceal. But Gandalf joined
@magenta53 that's different though, but interesting (Gandalf probably cloaked his magic). Could Galadriel kill a balrog? I think that question deserves a video
@MiddelEarthQA-zv3tc I sincerely think she can. Don't forget Glorfindel killed a Balrog when he was the Lord of the House of the Golden flower, before he was resurrected with more power on the level of Galadriel. Killing a Balrog is not the problem, surviving the task is what seems to be impossible. I think the curse of Balrogs is that you can't kill one and live to tell the tale, look at Ecthelion, Glorfindel, Gandalf So I think Galadriel can, but she'll probably die in the process
was always confused.Gandalf is a angel. The witch king is no match for him
Jip, that is one of the movie parts that irritate me. Thanks for commenting.
@@MiddelEarthQA-zv3tc Glad to see im not crazy🤣
@@MiddelEarthQA-zv3tc as far as I’m concerned it’s a matter of the witch king drawing his power from Sauron who is considerably stronger than Gandalf
@@MimiThomaFlwrs Not according to the books, unless you are referring to Gandalf in the form of "the Grey." Or are you claiming Gandalf having power from Eru Illuvatar is less powerful than Sauron due to Eru somehow being less powerful?
@@patrickhenry236 best I’m aware Sauron/Mairon is ‘genetically’ more powerful than Gandalf. (Maia don’t have genetics but it’s the best word I could think of at the moment)
Is the devil afraid of the devil
I'm sorry I don't quite follow your reasoning....but thanks for the comment.
And that today is why apples are so healthy for you, even though they're called Malus.
There were many fire spirits that Melkor seduced. By the time of the First Age, Seven of the Greatest fire spirits were left. These Balrogs commanded dragons and were the generals in Morgoths armies. Durin’s Bane was one of these generals. With that said. DB and Gandalf the Grey could both stand up to, and defeat Smaug.
Awesome comment! I agree, especially if Gandalf did not "hold back".
Gandalf is an angel and gladrielis Mortal being in the end. This video is vullshit and woke no sense And before this lasT 20 years NO ONE would be asking this question
HAHAHAHA, oh man I understand now why you say woke. I am not woke at all, but I get why you say that. Anyway rest assured it had nothing to do with being woke. It was just an exploration of two characters, and I tried to make it interesting. Anyway over time and with more research I am actually considering updating this video.
Gandalf is NOT an angel!!!!!! Olorin is an angel. He entered middle earth as Gandalf, a wizard with a fraction of the power he had as Olorin
@magenta53 good comment, and I think what makes this topic interesting is exactly that. How much of his power is manifested in Grey or white form. Gandalf actually does some pretty epic magic in the books.
Quit with your WOKE BULLLSHIIIT
Gandalf can use his powers to defend himself, he isn't just going to take it lying down.
Like he did with Durin's bane, but as Gandalf the white he was seriously badass.
I'd say that in bear form, he was as heavy as a large Asian elephant, and around 10' tall at the shoulder.
That is a pretty good ballpark. Agree quite well with some verybtechnical descriptions I have seen.
I believe it was because of his honor as you said
What an awesome character. Just love Aragorn. Thanks for the comment.

Most powerful Elf: Feanor....according to similrillion Most powerful elves in LOTR: Galadriel and Elrond....according to Two Towers, when Gandalf explains the only other people, besides himself, who could challenge Saruman if Saruman got the Ring
Feanor indeed was and Galardriel definately very powerfull. Glorfindel is a bit of a special case really, so I'm not comparing just mentioning a bit about him. Thansk for the comment!
Barlog are clearly superior to dragons as they are demigods Smaug is small But if we talk about ankalagon the black....😂
Yes that thing was ridiculously large!
I am Gandalf the White and I come back to you at the turn of the tide Brah. What new devilry is this, Bro? If you would but lend me the ring Bro.
Haha love these, thanks!
Gandalf was not the most powerful servant of the valar. Saruman was before gandalf became gandalf the white. Within the ranks of the maia they are not all equal in their abilities. As seen by the blue and brown wizzards comapred to the white. Saruman was head of the Order during the time of the war of the ring. Even the Balrogs of morgoth are corrupted maia. Gandalf did not plan the chain of events that led to the witch kings defeat , that prophecy was told in the second age already. All of the istari were made to do the will/plans of the valar on middle earth. They are essentially pawns with a duty to complete. Just like the eagles sent by manwe saved gandalf multiple times.
Thanks for the comment. I agree with this mostly, I think what I meant in the video is that Gandalf's wisdom, foresight, humility and empathy eventually led to the undoing of the witch king. So the idea is that although he was actually quite powerfull, his "goodness" was his biggest strength. I have a few more videos on Gandalfs actual powers please check them out and have an awesome day.

Narrate yourself bro..fk this Ai shit
I would rather see Gandalf as a counterpoint to Sauron himself, than the Witch King. Any confusion on the matter can be laid squarely at the feet of the movies, where Gandalf is portrayed as being fearful of the Witch King, whereas the books have him holding his own against many of the Nazgul on Weathertop. Gandalf was Maiar, as was Sauron, and though we read that Olorin (Gandalf in the Undying Lands) feared Sauron's might, the Valar saw in him a greater power. The chief contrast between the two (Gandalf and Sauron) lies in how they manifest their power. Sauron would seek to dominate through coercion and force, whereas Gandalf seeks only to persuade and inspire. His is indeed the more difficult road, as such a path is less assured of success, but the great lesson of the tale is that this approach ultimately wins, since it doesn't fight against the will of others. In this light, the Witch King, being wholly subject to the Ring and hence the mind of Sauron, is an empty shell, bereft of will, an unworthy opponent to the White Rider.
Wow what a great comment thanks! In a sense the Nazgul are Saurons "hands and feet" and basically totally under his controll. So not even all 9 is equal to Gandalf as he is a much more powerfull being as we see in the books. In short I just meant that the Nazgul was fear and dread, Gandalf was hope and courage. I have quite a few videos on this actually and I have the scene in the movie where Gandalf's staff is broken. I made a video specifically on that. Have an awesome day!
