    I just got myself a Jeff Loomis Signature Series "Jackson Kelly" made in Korea, and I have to say the guitar is pretty amazing, the only thing is his signature series pickups are "Seymour Duncan blackouts", I mean they pick up every little thing and I had to put foam in the back of the trem springs for the tremolo because they ring through the pickups as well. Easy problem to fix, there's no need to buy new noiseless Springs just a thin piece of foam behind the Springs did the job, it comes with a Floyd rose 1500. The only difference between the Floyd 1000 and the 1500 is stainless steel pins and lock nut screws. Beat the hell out of it and stays in tune great though. Oh... no case or gig bag so i had to get a hardshell case for it. For that price it should come with a case. Other than that the guitar is pretty amazing $1,599 and yes that is the most I've ever spent on a jackson through the many years I've played them. I always Frankenstein them out, new trem, new pickups so on. Can't afford the usa model. It's a all around solid guitar though for anyone thinking about it. Great craftsmanship too. The white binding around the ash top body/neck is really well done. Going to stick with the black out pickups for now, but may change to black winters, or EMG'S. Yet to decide lol.

    I got a Ibanez Premium late last year and it has the Tone Zone and Air Norton pickups in it, and trying to dial in a good metal tone for my band has been difficult. I've tried to eq my amp differently, lower and raise the pickups, different pedals, and no matter what it just doesn’t inspire me to play it. The new Duncan Noumenon Jeff Loomis pickups are something I want to get. It's been hard trying to find "My Sound" too. Love the videos Paulo, keep on rockin!🤟

    They're cool. I have 2 from 2023. Initially, both had intonation issues: the bridges are set about 1/8th of an inch too far back. I had to modify things in order to overcome this. Great necks, though I later refretted them with hypo-allergenic fret wire as I am allergic to nickel. I also replaced the saddles with stainless steel saddles.

    When I was first picking up guitar, I had a bc rich V with stock pickups and a solid state, Ibanez tone blaster half stack. It sounded pretty meh. Mostly because i had no idea what i was doing. Swapped the bridge pick-up out for a Seymour duncan dimebucker and was pretty underwhelmed by the difference it made. Playing metal, and being a Dimebag fan, I thought that would be a good choice. An eq and overdrive was really what I was needing, but I didn't know these things at the time. Then I swapped the dimebucker out for an EMG 81 and that seemed to fix the problems I was having. Got rid of the loose low end flub, and relaced the fuzziness in the top end with some nice clarity. After that I thought active pickups were the way. Being older and more knowledgeable now, I know what to do to make any pickup work, but I still prefer actives because for me they take a lot of the extra work out. Passives I find much nicer for clean, as most people do, but Playing on a high gain channel for 99% of the night, I'll put up with a thin clean sound for 1% of the time. Switching to the middle or neck position fills things out nicely. I don't have tone controls in my guitars anymore so I can't say if they would be useful in making things a little less brittle. Modelers help too as one can eq the crap out of a clean patch. I have played Fishmans and I didn't find any magic in them that made me want to join that cult. They sound fine, but I find more and more that pickups matter less than they are given credit. I played a show recently where a kid was gushing over my tone. All he wanted to know was what pickups I had in my guitar. He responded by saying "I have a guitar with the same pickups so I should be able to get that sound!" I told him "yes... but only if you plug it into this rig." A pickup is one aspect among many in a closed electric circuit. And it isn't even the most important one.

    I've got too many guitars and have tried out almost every pickup under the sun. Stupid obsession, but I love it. For my own music, I definitely prefer active - the EMG Het Set specifically is the greatest heavy rock pickup pair ever IMO, and I also really really like the 57/66 set. These are not "sterile" either - they do have the classic active characteristics, but feel much more dynamic and alive than the 81 everybody grew up on, or Voice 1of the Fishmans. Obviously many people associate actives with high output or very hot distortion, but I prefer them because they're very tight, clean and precise. I have a percussive style where fast tracking and note definition is very important, and I need a pickup that has a very focused, compressed and punchy sound that I can get while relying on only moderate preamp distortion and preferably no overdrive pedals. That's what I get from the EMGs and it's awesome. I like many passives, but sometimes they can get too warm, a bit too flubby and sometimes muddy. Can't have that. If I do need to record cleans, I'll often do it with a passive guitar, but I generally dislike the sound of clean electric guitar and will more often than not arrange such parts for either piano or acoustic. Also when I'm looking for a more "vintage" sound, my passives come in quite handy. I also like to double-track with actives and record a third guitar down the middle and that will often be a passive guitar through a different amp.

    Having two voicings is a plus for versatility which the Fishmans have and some Duncan actives as well. EMG offers these various things like the Afterburner switch.

  • @angusorvid8840
    @angusorvid8840 3 месяца назад

    On the active vs passive issue, I tend to prefer passives but don't hate actives. I've just never found them necessary for my personal needs. I've owned a lot of EMGs over the years and even a DiMarzio Shockwave system in a '61 strat in the 80s which the previous owner had installed by the time I bought it. I loved the Shockwave system, but it ate batteries like popcorn. I mostly got by in the 80s using Super Distortions, MegaDrives, X2Ns, Double Whammys and PAF Pros and Fred. I've always been a DiMarzio guy. Then the Tone Zone came out in '91 and that became my main pickup as I've always played mostly strats. In shorter scale axes I'd use a Super Distortion, X2N, PAF Pro or Fred. When I use a neck pup it's often the Air Norton. But I'm a player who's spent 98% of my guitar playing career on the bridge pup which is yet another reason the Tone Zone works for me. It means I can live in that position and the high end is smooth, not harsh and brittle like I find the JB and some actives to be like the EMG 81.

    My current Ibanez Rgt has the Tone Zone and Air Norton in it. I've been struggling to get the Tone Zone no matter how many times I've adjusted my eq. It's really bass heavy and has been as tight as some Duncan's and Emg's I've played. I tried raising and lowering the pickup, but I've still had a hard time trying to get it to sound like I want. You have any recommendations if I decide to replace it. I love the Air Norton though, it's so smooth. Keep the metal faith alive man, love the content!🤟

      Thank you so much for the reply! I think in your situation to pair up with the air norton and take away the lower end on bridge pickups, you'd probably like the Evo 2.

    • @angusorvid8840

      I love the Tone Zone. I've been using them since they came out decades ago. I played a gig at The Roxy with a Tone Zone in my Charvel in '91 and it sounded amazing through my Boogie 50 Cal and I've been hooked on Tone Zones ever since. But I know what you mean about the bass. The bass depends on a number of factor. The tone wood of the guitar, the scale of the guitar (I would ONLY use them in 25.5 strat scale), the amp and settings you use, and the tuning. Although some players like Rob Caggiano have used Tone Zones with low tunings, I think they are best in E standard. Also, besides lowering the pickup you can raise the back fillister screws. That can make a big difference, but you have to do it very carefully and dial it in slowly. Another option if you like the Tone Zone but what more clarity is the Air Zone which was originally designed as a Page Hamilton signature model. If you want the maximum amount of clarity you can get out of a hot, high output pickup with tight low end, crunch, sustain and harmonics I'd go for the Steve's Special which is the pup Petrucci used for much of the 90s. It was included stock in his original Ibanez signature. Like the Tone Zone, it's a polarizing pickup, but for different reasons. The Tone Zone is all beefy, low mids. The Steve's Special (designed by DiMarzio engineer Steve Blucher for his own needs) has dialed back mids, so you get more control when you play through a high mid, high gain amp. This helps you retain clarity, note separation, etc. This pickup gets what is known as clean distortion. It's crunchy and powerful, but you can still hear what's going on. It's great for prog metal. The Vai models, the Evo and Evo 2 are more focused on higher mids and are hotter. I think Paulo is right about the Evo 2 being a good match. The Evo is very hot and not the easiest pickup to get a hang of. The Evo 2 is tamer without being boring.

    • @hawaiianshirtguy_29
      @hawaiianshirtguy_29 3 месяца назад

      @angusorvid8840 I've heard some demos of the Tone Zone in an Alder Charvel, it sounded so good. My guitar is basswood with a poplar top. So I know it is darker mid range sounding tone wood. Paulo told me about the Evo 2, and I've been trying to give it some thought, and I love the Steve's special on the 90's Dream Theater albums. For a while I've thought about swapping the Tone Zone for the Steve's special. And I've been wanting to stick with Dimarzio's for my Ibanez, I've always really liked Dimarzio's a lot.

    I grew up in L.A. and was highly involved in the shred scene in this town starting around '87, when it was at its peak, till '93 when it disappeared. Yes, I liked to shred, I liked high performance guitar playing, and still do. But the music scene became inimical to competent guitar playing. Yes, shred burned itself out, but MTV also decided to demote metal in the name of grunge. They gave grunge the push it needed and put the spotlight on it. But shreddy metal still found a home in Europe and Japan. But I lived in L.A. and there was nothing like the shred scene of the 80s by the time the 90s got rolling, except in the halls of Guitar Institute/Musicians Institute, and that was very underground by then. Shred has since picked up again, but rock does not hold the place it did in the music scene or as a social force that it once did.

      @adriengrayson1369 it wasn't too difficult. I like a little rounder C shapes for more bluesy stuff. Like on the PRSs, the Custom24 Floyd even has a flatter 14" radius compare to the usual PRS 10". I don't like the Dean style V neck shape but the Washburn actually has a D shape which is similar to a Jackson so I like it. Flatter D neck profiles like Ibanez Wizard I like but the compound radius 12-16" is a best mixture.
