Hypocritical libertarian?
Nozick's 'Anarchy, State, Utopia' is 50 years old this year. Let us start the celebration of the 'libertarian bible' with a fun (?) anecdote about Nozick and his rent controlled apartment. More on ASU to come!

Yeah, but maybe you are dumber than you think or maybe you just don’t know the bullshit you think you know or maybe most people don’t want your help
Solid video, thanks for the effort

A prisoner who is against his own imprisonment isn't a hypocrite for eating the food provided by the prison.
'Science' or psychobabble? How do you tell the difference in an enterprise entirely based on opinion?
Nozick won the battle but ultimately lost the war.
There are no extreme if you’re unable to to call the current status quo as extrem, we are fine with burning our earth and the killing of innocent people based on religion and where they were born. So everything is extrem, therefore nothing is… you could say radical based on the Latin word for root that works
Doesn't sound really sound hypocritical. The counterargument, is that Segal gave up his right to charge whatever rent he wanted. And likewise, the management company was also quite aware that they were charging rent in violation of the Cambridge ordinance. This is a situation where the parties agreed to circumvent the ordinance, because they both knew of its requirements and conditions. The controlled rent was $1,300/mo. But, Nozick agreed to pay $1,800. But Segal rented the condo for less than his actual costs. So, kept trying to ignore the original contract, and raise the rent to $2,300. But, that wasn't what they agreed to. And when Nozick complained to Segal, Segal's reponse was that Nozick's book meant Nozick waived any right to complain. Nozick said he didn't. Segal said, "So sue me." So, Nozick's lawyer did. And he won. The curious thing in here is Segal thinking, "I can renege on the contract, and demand more, because my tenant wouldn't dare complain because of his own philosophy." Arguably, if that unique factor were not present, the case never would've happened. And Segal would not have tried to "take advantage" of Nozick's unique position.
You should remake this video. Using Harris, Biden and Obama.
To be a libertarian you need to have a deep misunderstanding of how economies, governments and societies work. It's a contradictory, unworkable worldview suited for teenagers that want to feel special and above the "petty constraints of society." Thats why most people just grow out of it as they get older.
100%, unfortunately many are refusing to grow up and learn real economics
I don't know the specifics, but if a contract was signed such that price would have to follow government regulations, and both parties agreed to it, and then the landlord in this case broke it, then it wouldn't be against the libertarian ideal to fight for a fair compensation for breaking such contract. Again, I don't know about this case so maybe what Im saying doesn't apply, let me know if I'm wrong.
I don't think Nozick was a hypocrite. Sounds more like his landlord was just using the book as a gotcha while ignoring that the United States is far from being the minarchist state that Nozick describes in his book.
That doesnt make him not a hypocrit, he was.
@@boristheamerican2938 No it doesn't because it doesn't take into account this economy and that theoretical economy are vastly different. It's like if I was to call a communist a hypocrite if they opposed a UBI. There may be a multitude of reasons they would oppose such a thing in a capitalist economy, maybe they think that it would just result in rent hikes and more wealth for landlords, or maybe they see it as a tool to slow down the rate at which the workers are alienated from the capitalist system.
@@Ely-zf4yt No his beliefs. If he truly believes what he professes to believe then he shouldnt have any problem with his rent being raised. The truth is he is just a selfish self centered little baby.
The reason the rent kept going up in the first place was due to zoning laws.
Utilitarianism consider every being is pleasure or utility equally. But it doesn't take actione equally.
While not necessarily a demonstration that he didn't believe what he wrote, it sure seems like he could have benefited from society in which his well-being was valued more than the freedom of a landlord to harm his well-being. It's the fundamental question: why is it that we should care about the freedom to be detrimental to others more than the right to not be harmed? And why draw the line at physical force when there are many other forms of harm? Don't give me the "total free market anarchic capitalism is the best for people so it's a moot point" argument. For one, it's obviously wrong, but also, it's not the question.
Using personal resources in exchange for what an individual deems to be a desirable outcome is compatible with libertarianism. The use of the word "freedom" in this context is borderline incoherent, from the perspective of making a clear & coherent argument. I get it's a buzz word in America as a social signifier, but making an emotional appeal for the "freedom to freely negate others freedom without risking losing any freedom", or limiting the concept of state or non-state violence to only physical harm makes what should be a very outdated & basic discussion into a word salad free for all.
It is often used that way. And people fall for it. They think that letting people damage their health or otherwise endanger them is some rugged act of defiance out of the movie Braveheart. Of course you could have a version of libertarianism that uses a more expansive concept of force or violence, but the fact that it even has to make a random exception like that suggests that freedom isn't a be-all-end-all value. It's good to have some freedoms but it's not good to have freedoms that, when exercised by others, do harm to oneself.
How does Rawls deal with Nozick's arguments?
Very nice!
Very nice🎉
nice
Consequentialism is completely circular because how do you determine which consequences are more valuable?
that depends on the theory of value (and the argument for it), or did you mean something else? Consequentialism indeed does not tell you what to do, strictly speaking, only what makes actions morally right (the consequences they have)
@@PhilosophicalQuestions the point is you cant evaluate consequences with consequentialism. Its completely useless. Any other system can be construed as consequentialism, if you consider the results that system gives as being the consequence
Eventually, the universe dies as a cold blob. Consequently, nothing matters?
Bro just share the technical version it'd be way more interesting

thank you, appreciate it ! :)
Great video PhilQ! Thanks for your work :)
thank you!
This is a stupid idea. How do you know the consequences of your actions before doing them? The American pragmatic thinking thought the Iranian coup led by them was a success until the late70, Pragmatic thinking is just an arrogant stupid thinking..... You just have to live among Muslims for a while to understand why pragmatism is dangerous and stupid.
The French writer in question....?
I think it was Jean-François Marmontel

Yay incest! Woooooo!
EA, Pinker, Duflo and SBF are the epitome of human imbecility.
America and its so-called democracy is a fraud, so maybe it would make sense to worry about that instead of psychology, which, except for animal behavioral studies, is a soft science ... and relatively harmless.
How about this? Is it possible for a person to do wrong against themselves? Yes. (Such as being a whore). So, who experiences the ill affects of this whorishness? A soul. If there was no soul, a person could do anything, including all manner of wrong against themselves, and not feel any different. I am not a philosopher but this seems right.
Psychology is new-age mysticism stemming from eastern mysticism. It is also deeply infused into literally everything we entertain ourselves with--politics, movies, music, art in general. This is actually an irrefutable fact. Do some research with the keywords carl jung and the new age. Then look up Freud's warning to Jung regarding the depths of studying psychology. He said it was occult. People should not trust it. They pretend it helps people, and it might in tiny rooms between "doctor" and "patient", but it is a weapon to the masses.
Listening to "when im 64" made the participants younger. Just for the record.
the notion that people are all rational is utopian and there is no way without a type of state and demoncracy that 'peace' would result
The anecdote about Hegel and Schopenhauer is a little unfactual. Schopenhauer of course knew that more people would go to Hegel's lectures, he was very aware of his immense fame, and it was never his attention to try to detract attendees. Schopenhauer merely did it out of principle, which is very Schopenhauerian. Also, I imagine he liked the thought of teaching to so few people.
I wonder why some people get resources like this for free? Where is their personal information being leaked?
Entertaining! Suprisingly small channel?
Good video
The problem with states is also, that they always tend to maximize their authority, there is no state that doesnt become more and more authoritarian other time and to justify that even creates problems to offer a solution, good ol' hegel.... man iam glad that i shitposted under that other video. 😅
just here to say your thumbnail sets a flawed premise for the whole video... there is no capitalism since 1910.
we've all been defrauded with pseudocapitalism.
Did u watch it?😂
@@PhilosophicalQuestions no 🤣, but iam going to later, i promise XD
@FrittenFritzgerald ok, the capitalism on the bowl will be explained :p
@@PhilosophicalQuestions thanks for reminding me that deducting the content of a video from the title and the thumbnail is often bullshit, its kind of a sickness i dont get rid of. lmao
making society fair and improving people’s health and biology is way better for preventing crime, just look at any high trust country.
star platinum scared the shit out of me lol
Wittgenstein being based as always
So to reintegrate criminals back to society we isolate them from it? We are such stupid creatures.
Bro is underrated af But seriously I think prisoners should spend a year or so in programs to bring them back into society. Because of that I think they would be less likely to relapse
I was so happy when I heared it.
love ur vids, i was shocked when i saw your channel only had 6k subs lol, you'll explode one day in the future
