First Mated Queen of 2024! - Pagden AS Update - Part 7
Today we checked the on the two three-frame splits we made as part of the Pagden Artificial Swarm. The plan was to see if we could find the queens and see whether they were mated and/or laying yet.

Oh no! Where are my bees? Pagden Artificial Swarm Update - Part 6
Просмотров 227Месяц назад
Disaster! Having left my splits with one queen cell each I failed to go back in a week later. Well, they made lots more emergency queen cells and have probably swarmed multiple times. Lesson learned, next time I will be going in to remove any excess cells.

Pagden Artificial Swarm - Quick Update (Part 4)

It's been a difficult weekend staying out of the hives this week. It is so tempting to open them up to see how they are doing but at this stage it can only have a detrimental affect on the bees. The splits that we made on the 25th March have still got another week before we can go in to see if they have successfully mated queens. The weather hasn't been bad for mating flights, we've hit 20 Cels...

Asian Hornet Vespa velutina, the yellow legged hornet, commonly known as the Asian hornet, is native to Asia and was confirmed for the first time in Lot-et-Garonne in the South West of France in 2004. It was thought to have been imported in a consignment of pottery from China and it quickly established and spread to many regions of France. As of December 2022, Asian hornet is established in Spa...

Saturday 30th March 2024 It's 5 days since I split my strongest hive using the Pagden Method. Today I was looking at the hive with the original queen. I gave her some a box of damaged shallow frames on top of a deep box of foundation with one frame of brood. The hope was that there would be plenty of bees, that they would have started drawing out the frames of foundation, the queen is present a...

An update on yesterday's video when I performed a Pagden Artificial Swarm. Today I wanted to check that the queen had plenty of bees in her side of the split. I also needed to remove swarm cells in the other hive to prevent them from swarming. I chose to leave one Queen Cell in the main hive, and made up two 3-frame nucs as a back up. Hope you enjoy the video and please subscribe for more in th...

Following my inspection 6 days ago when I found queen cups with eggs, I went into Hive 3 again today. I found multiple charged swarm cells so decided I needed to perform an artificial swarm to avoid losing one of my best overwintering queens. I believe this method is called the Pagden Artificial Swarm. At 5pm on a day when the high temperature was only 10 degrees it wasn't ideal timing, but nee...
Swarm Cells in March?!

This is my biggest colony coming out of the winter. The first inspection of the year revealed eggs in queen cells, but not charged with Jelly. What's going on? Are they preparing to swarm? Let me know in the comments.

    Is it easy enough to find and remove a virgin queen? I think I have 2 hives that had either late or early supercedure, last 2 checks no brood or eggs but calm and bringing in pollen

      They are a lot harder to find and catch than laying queens because they are smaller and faster. Just take your time and be ready when you do find her. If you take your eyes off her she will be gone. It may be that you have a failed queen still in their, which would be easier. This happened to one of my colonies over the winter.

      @@angelamitchell7531 if you can't find a queen then putting in a "test frame" with eggs and young larvae will tell you if there is one present. If they draw out queen cells then no queen present. If not then there will be a queen in there somewhere. Best of luck with it!

    What kind of Queens are you running?

    • @InTheHive-Beekeeping
      @InTheHive-Beekeeping Месяц назад

      Local mongrels at the moment, my original queen was from a swarm in the garden. These are her daughters and another queen we cut out of a chair last year. They have all been pretty prolific, we appear to have a lot of "Buckfast type" genetics around here. Rather prone to swarm, but hoping I can learn to tame them.

    The queen cells can be made out of eggs or two day old larvae therefore after selecting the queen cell you want to keep. Remove the other queen cells and then go in 7 days later to destroy the queen cells they have made leaving the first one you had decided to keep. Do not shake the frame with the queen cell that you are keeping as the larvae could become dislodged causing damage. The queen once emerged will take 5-6 days to mature before she can take a mating flight and will make multiple mating flights, mating with up to 20 drones. She will then take 2-3 weeks before laying eggs. Hope this information helps 🐝

    A technique I have heard is tapping the side of the frame as the wax moth doesn't like the vibration causing them to come out of the comb. I haven't tried tapping the frames on my beehives as I have only had trouble with the wax moth under the hive on the mesh floor board. Why do you use your hives the cold way instead of the warm way?

    • @InTheHive-Beekeeping
      @InTheHive-Beekeeping Месяц назад

      Hi Aidan, That sounds like an interesting technique, I'll have to give it a try next time I come across some more wax moth larvae. I imagine you would want to shake the bees off first as they're not fond of vibration either. Warm way/cold way is always an interesting debate. My friend and mentor has his warm way. I like to try different things andI read that bees in the wild will generally orientate their combs the cold way compared to the entrance. I try to mimic how they would do things where I can. It's also good if you have two people inspecting, as you can stand either side. Interestingly this isn't a debate elsewhere in the world as nearly all other hive designs (other than National) have the frames arranged in the cold way. Ultimately, I'm not sure it makes a lot of difference. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks for watching! She is the daughter of my original queen, who arrived as part of a swarm in my garden a couple of years ago. Her mother did a similar thing early last year. The "local" bees hear appear to have quite a heavy buckfast influence in terms of looks and behaviour.

      Not really, it's a bit warmer in Suffolk than most of the UK, but this colony seem to have got off to a flier and ran out of space. I would have expected to be okay for at least another couple of weeks really.
