symphonie
Просмотров 9584 года назад
I'm considering making a Hurdy Gurdy but first wanted to make the simpler version called a symphonie in order that I could become acquainted with how they were constructed. They are ridiculously fernickerty, which I knew before I started, but I always appreciate a challenge. Construction is completed but I would emphasise that I am by no means there sound wise. Much tweaking and adjustment is s...

Cypress Dulcimer Old Joe Clark

A dulcimer I made using bald cypress wood reclaimed from a local bourbon distiller's fermentation vat. Walnut fretboard, peg head and foot. Hickory pegs. This is the first time that this instrument got a voice, fine tuning is still required.

In response to the shortage of toilet tissue brought on by the coronavirus I will be taking a limited number of orders for my ever popular Bespoke Artisanal TP. Individually handcrafted from the finest old growth spruce. Manufactured in "small", "medium" and "woah how big?" to suit every need. Orders of 15 board feet or more will qualify for a discount. Poplar body, western red cedar top, walnut fretboard peghead and foot. 27" VSL. I hope that you can recognise Auld Lang Syne as I continue the learning processes of both building and playing the dulcimer. A Happy New Year to you all.
Turning logs into lumber.
Просмотров 5974 года назад
I built an in feed/out feed table and sledge for my Porter Cable band saw to enable me to cut usable lumber from logs. Max length 48". Max thickness 5". Using a 3/4" 3 tpi Timberwolf blade. Would I like a "real" sawmill? Yes certainly. Would I prefer a more powerful bandsaw with a deeper cut? Again yes. But this is what I have and it works for the purpose that I require.
How to build a dulcimer in under 10 minutes.

Cherry Dulcimer. The wood was harvested from a local storm damaged tree. Quarter sawn on site then stored under cover and allowed to dry. It has been my Summer project, I have enjoyed every moment of it. Tuned in DAD. This is the 5th one that I have made, I'm still trying to learn how to play them.
The roubo saw and kerfing plane in use.

First full test of the kerfing plane and roubo saw on a 36" x 7" pine board. I found that provided I paid reasonable attention the saw easily followed the groves made by the kerfing plane. Something of a work out but not too bad. The complete cut took about an hour. I was very pleased with the results.
Kerfing Plane

I have now completed the kerfing plane to be used in conjunction with the roubo saw. It is used to cut a narrow slot all around the workpiece which the roubo saw will then follow. The wood is locally sourced hard maple. The blade is from the same saw plate as the one used for the roubo saw. Please see that video for details.
Roubo Saw

The Roubo Saw Named after its creator, the 19th Century French cabinet maker Andre Jacob Roubo, the Roubo saw was used for resawing timber. Rather than cutting timber to length resawing is cutting a board to thickness. My reason for making this saw was to enable me to cut the thin boards for the fronts and backs of dulcimers. I can and have done this using my band saw, but this time I wanted to...

Dulcimer #3. Western Red Cedar (reclaimed from the old kids play set we replaced at the church) with Poplar scroll, foot and fretboard. Dog no longer covers his ears so my playing must have improved a little. It's a work in progress :)

Just to pass the time I've been building a wooden clock. This was the first time that I got to hear it tick. Based on plans by Brian Law www.woodenclocks.co.uk/
amazing!!!
Beautiful, but 10 years, not 10 mins lol
Hey! Where did you get plans for the symphonie I have been searching for them for a bit and want to build one myself.
Thank you so very much for showing use your pen thank you Nathan
So basically You are the coolest guy on the planet!!! Wow…🙏🙋♀️👏
Your hands were in the way on too many key shots during this video. Please redo it and move the camera.
How long did it take you to cut the teeth?
Much respect!
My fist dulcimer was made by a 14 year old young man in wood shop. I've had it for 50 years and I treasure it even more after seeing the work required. Thank you for sharing this. ❤
Awesome video thanks! I’m curious if the jig with the wedges also adds some curvature to the plates or if they’re meant to be flat? Also curious if you’ve tried making one with a more traditional wood for the top like cedar or spruce?
nice job
swet job
Have a feeling it'll take me longer than 10 minutes for this project...
the title is a fucking bullshit lie... there is NO FUCKING WAY IN HELL that he built a dulcimer from scratch "in under 10 minutes..." NO FUCKING WAY!!!
😂😅😅😂
Mr. Phil, that is a bang up job you did. I'll get started tomorrow. Have you had a request for the top to be made of horn? If so what are your thoughts on that. Keep on keeping on. Merrion - Jennings, LA
Dang, I have the tools, experience, desire, and time to do this. Just need some self discipline.
❤️Roubo resaw
Beautifully done. 😉
Nice video! Good work.
Is that a piece of the same blade in the saw?
I'll take one.
Beautiful, sir.
Sounds to me like you're doing real well with playin' part. And clearly you've got the makin' down. But at 8 minutes each, you'll turn out 15,000 dulcimers each year. Don't you worry about flooding the market? 😄
are you in good health?
Be very sure that you will not be able to build a dulcimer from scratch in 10 mins like the post states.
This looks suspiciously like more then 10 minutes
Really a nice job Phil. I've been a musician and woodworker for years. Now I'm going to try my hand at dulcimers. How thick was your top and bottom? I'm wanting to do an eastern red cider top but think it may need to be thicker than 1/8". Have a wonderful day. Jim
gracefully amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG. Been playing guitars on & off for 65 years (now 75yrs young). Fell in love with CBG's and started making them for friends & family (not selling), and having a great time... until I stumbled onto the Gulicmer. ...have now fallen head over heels over the sound...just beautiful. I'm an old woodworker, so that was one reason to love building CBG"s. However, I'm so excited by this new (for me) instrument! I want to build and play it... I just hope I can do anywhere near as good as you and a few others I just saw. Thank you oh so much.
❤
That is a thing of beauty, and a wonder watching you work. :-)
Thank you.. Watching you helped me solve a problem I was having. Thank you for sharing.
Wow ! I know its 3 years old, but Great video ! This type of skill and craft are becoming such a lost art. I truly hope you are passing that knowledge onto another lucky soul. ( aside from us youtubers that is )
You will lol
Thanks for sharing! Beautiful instrument!
What kind of pegs did you use?
Generally are the headstocks attached to the body to allow for a a better anchor to handle the string tension? I’m about to disassemble a cheap foreign dulcimer neck to be be attached to a cigar box and noticed the headstock and neck are separate pieces.
Roll on floor with laughter nicely done
sweet job
Thank you this was very helpful
I’m learning to play. My dream is to build one like this. I’m not $ to have the electric equipment so am looking to find the necessary tools. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
You just need basic woodworking tools. The band saw and power sanders make the task quicker but they are not essential. My best advice is to just start and go from there. Often the hardest part is just starting.
Pretty dang cool !! Making wood sing.
Would you happen to have any dulcimers for sale?
Very nice looking bowl. Great job! Thanks!
I thought the title was "How to buy a dulcimer in under 10 minutes".
Design of guide is fine but the High guide of support chainsaw is too short, so for cutting you have yo bend all time.
Wow! Incredible craftsmanship, and love your technique! Especially the jig you have for matching the two boards together and how to keep them flat - brilliant work
Great job. Planing to go the same route ( roubo + Kerf Plane). So, very helpful. Tks
Glad you found it helpful. Wishing you every success with your project.
That is beautiful work my friend! I noticed you had braces on the bottom but didn't notice any on the top - did you have anything supporting the top - braces etc? I'm keen to build one so would welcome any advice from a master! Thanks for a lovely video !
The top is effectively braced by the fretboard. My best advise, if you want to build one, is to just start. Use an inexpensive wood such as poplar, that way if it all goes pear shaped (pun intended :) you can easily remake a section. In my opinion there are no hard and fast rules, these are folk instruments, each takes on the characteristics of the builder. If you need advice from a master just hang around, I'm sure one will be along shortly ;)
@@BeyondF1 Thankyou very much - you have certainly inspired me.
@@richedwards9646 you are very welcome.
