in the second example, melody notes are allowed to blend into one another in both time (legato) and pitch (glissando), and the whole thing is slightly out of time with itself (microrhythm). these things are very human elements, and if your piece doesn't include them, it can feel flat and lifeless. even the untrained ear is very good at hearing the difference between digital and real performances by listening for these cues. of course, the skilled composer will include them in their digital works and fool you, haha
