The FIREd Couple
Индия
Добавлен 5 авг 2023
We are a Financially Independent Retired Early couple trying to help others with their path to financial independence (retiring early is an option … financial independence is a must!)
We both hail from a humble middle-class background, raised by our parents to value education, have a hard work ethic and remain grounded. These values helped us to have a solid 25-year career in some of the reputed global organizations. Over the years we stumbled and learned our way towards savings, investing and our path to financial independence. Now that we've been able to achieve that and also taken the bold step of retiring early, we want to raise awareness about personal finance (wish it was a mandatory subject taught in schools!) and help others with their journey.
From time to time we also post videos on travel and professional development.

Stop Wasting Money. Three expense budget killers exposed.
The consumer companies spend millions of dollars to encourage us in subtle (and not so subtle) ways to make sure we spend our hard-earned money in buying their products. This can wreak havoc on the expense budgets and destroy our savings.
In this video, I expose some of those strategies and how to prevent these to impacting your budgets. Hope you find this useful.
Looking forward to your comments around these budget killers.

Our Financial Independence Journey in 5 Steps
Hi Yogi sir .. I have been watching various FIRE videos and reading lot about it… but in recent times.. the one that I could really connect is your videos.. very realistic and practical… I want to ask…do you provide retirement planning review as a service ? If yes I would like to discuss with you and get it validated from you… please let me know the charges and how should we go about it in case you offer this as a service…
Hello @Seema and @Yogi - Trust you are doing good, a great video once again. A different POV on Active Vs Passive Investing: I actually second Seema's effort "now" for exploring the trading route. Reason is, when we are focussing on our core skills then it makes little sense to jump into trading with half baked knowledge and unsolicited advices however now that she has time in her hand, it makes perfect sense to grasp on the skill set. Never mind the initial losses, they are part of the game but what we should deep look is the "skill" she is acquiring and honing to move up the value chain. I believe that grants you a firmer grip on your folio. After all we have seen poor mutual funds but never a a poor mutual fund manager :) Thoughts?
Thanks for sharing your journey and common themes. You make good content, and I would love to hear your perspective on how to find friends and community when traveling to a new country as a youngish retiree.
Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the suggestion, I'll make a note of that for a future video.
Your videos are very valuable. Please continue to share sir! You are truly "returning" valuable gyan to many who will or plan to retire early or otherwise. It helps to know all the things one has to be aware of , plan for (instead of worry about later) etc. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you are finding the videos useful. Very satisfying and encouraging to see your comments
I work in Bangkok since 2015 and is planning to retire here in a couple of years. Happy to See you both shedding some light into the benefits of retiring in Thailand. I just love this country and the possiblities it has specually for my passion of cycling, biking etc.

Hi again, i work in IT, how is the work opportunities in Thailand for IT, and other work opportunities for Indians. Since you have onsite work experience, can you share how can i find?
Best to look at the tech company websites and their job openings in Thailand. Alternatively, reach out to some of tech recruiters.
Another lovely video from the lovely couple. I wonder why they chose to retire in a country where they have no roots. Wouldn't it make more sense to retire in a familiar place? For example, if I were Bengali, I would retire in a city in Bengal with adequate medical facilities (and get a lifetime membership in a country club), and using it as a home base for world trips. I'm curious about Seema and Yogi sir's reasons for choosing Thailand. Is it because they feel rootless now?
Thanks for the appreciation. Yes it does make sense to retire at a familiar place. However, important to evaluate the potential retirement location in a way that familiarity is just one of the criteria along with the others (we listed out our criteria in ruclips.net/video/r9cbQprlc6w/видео.htmlsi=JjXaJ52WlaXI9-8p. Do watch). We chose Thailand as we are pretty flexible in adapting to new places, as we've lived in so many cities and different parts of the world during the last 3 decades.
FIRE should be a retirement aspect. But zeal to work even at 60. Thats FIRE, retiring early is a FLOP
There is no right or wrong. Hit of a flop. People can work till their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or more. Whatever suits someone. As we say - Financial Independence is a must. Retiring Early is an option.
That's really a very thoughtful & insightful video. Have been subscribed to your channel for almost 5-6 months now & loving every video you have been posting. Thanks a lot Yogi ji !
Thanks for subscribing and glad you are enjoying the videos
You made a good point about contributing/giving when people need it. I've tried to do that with my children and others who need it. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing!!
Cleanly explained ❤
Thank you 🙂
Yogi, I am guessing I am 5-7 years older than you and still 2 years away from getting FIREd. But we have been thinking about retiring in Thailand for a while now and happily discovered your channel a couple of days ago. Don't know if you have kids. But in the context of regrets, was wondering how you are managing kids, close family, and friends while being retired in Thailand. Thanks to you and Seema for your content and effort. Cheers. Ram S
Hi Ram, I am sure you are on a rock solid FIRE journey. Hope the information provided in the video helps towards your Thailand retirement plans but feel free to reach out if you need any more help. We don't have our own kids so in that way it was a bit easy. Though we are very close to our nieces, nephews, friends etc so making them part of the decision process was an important part of our location selection.
I am a newly "retired" person (just six months back and not-so-young when I retired viz 54). Few points to share 1. Expenses calculation tends to unsettle many people - I followed an easier approach by using just a single account for payments. And the difference between opening & closing balance is our monthly expense. We can do this for a year or two and we get a broad estimate 2. One need not really how much we are spending on buying palak every month or spending on restaurants - high level estimate is more than adequate. 3. One may look at debits beyond a reasonable value, say 50K, and one gets an indication of big heads - usually, it is travel, clothing & electronics apart from once-in-five years expenses (like buying a car or doing a home renovation) 4. What is more imp though than expenses is to find out whether one has cultivated an interest while living & working. Nowadays, window of a person's orientation is their Google/ RUclips footprint. If this is limited to general news or passive music listening but does not reflect a deep interest (reading, specific musical instrument) and if one is not pursuing such an interest while working, such ones should preferably not retire at all. 5. For me, travel is hugely overrated as world is broadly flat and all places today operate within a range and unless one has a specific deep interest (say photography), people will get bored within a few days of travel too. So, my recommendation will be that more than expense calculation, find out if one has cultivated a deep hobby which is being pursued throughout life. If no, then better keep working till health stops one. If however, one has a deep interest, then stop working and dive deep into the new life - life will be great once we can devote our full time into our deep domain of interest that defines our own self..
Thanks for sharing your wonderful insights based on your experience. Much appreciated!
@TheFIREdCouple Thanks for your words. You are doing a good service by sharing views on this domain. As an idea, it may be useful if you can feature those who may have chosen to leave work for a longer timeframe, say 6-10 years, and learn whether they remain tied to their decision to leave early. From that perspective, our timeframe post retirement is still "young" 😂. Of course, this is subject to such people being accessible to you for discussion/ sharing. Thanks again for your sensible podcast channel 🙏🙏
@@sadhakadhristi3754 Thanks for that idea. Difficult to find folks who've retired early and left work 6-10 years back but will be on a lookout for them. Suggestions welcome!
Dear Friend, I happened to watch a video of yours on moving to Bangkok for retirement with a retirement visa.I liked that, and it prompted me to go to Bangkok with my wife, we are retired and spend 11 days 9 in Bangkok and 2 in Pattaya. I loved it.Wife prefers Europe. I loved the food, the people, the affordability. In fact I spent only 50 % of our budgeted expense. Thanks for the motivation. Regarding your present video, I feel that it's bit repetitive, and if you could have shown that beautiful wooden house a bit, it would have been an icing on the cake.thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed the video and it was an inspiration to travel to Thailand. Not surprised that you managed to spend only 50% of the budget. Will try to show a bit more of the wooden house we rented in the next video.
Appreciate the honesty !!
Thanks! Appreciate your comment
Great review of your retired life. It will give others a great insight into what to expect..
Thanks. Glad it is helpful to give a glimpse into our retired life.
During your work life you are running behind process, target and priority. Now that u r retired how that mindset is impacting in personal life post retirement. My father tried to show his manager power in my home after retirement like his past and later it didn't worked in front of my mom, ofcourse all home is under control of mom only 😂.
We all have different bosses in professional and personal lives 😉
I appreciate you're work sir. Its helpful for us
Glad to hear that
This whole thing called FIRE is a load of nonsense. Many lazy folks have implemented this garbage called FIRE and become lazy. Only lazy people retire early. I don’t care how much money I make but work keeps my mind refreshed.
Well, respect your thought process. To each their own. Some people prefer to work till late years of their life while others prefer to maximize their later years and keep their mind fresh with things than work. Calling someone ‘lazy’ or something ‘garbage’ without knowing any context isn’t a fair assessment. In any case, as we say again and again - Financial independence is a must. Early retirement is an option.
What a great informative video 😊
Glad you liked it
Wonderful insights.
Thanks. Glad you found it helpful
There is a catch here..Fire equation totally changes when you don't have kids..i believe you don't have kids?
Yes. Kids do make a difference but it is all about planning. We funded the education of 2 nieces and 2 nephews. Also support a school for under privileged children. Most (actually all) we know who have FIREd have kids of different ages.
@@TheFIREdCouple got it, thanks for the reply

Thanks for the sub!
Do you guys have a podcast as well ?
Not the moment. Need to plan for that
Excellent update sir
So nice of you
Good video. I retired from working in hi-tech for 27 years earlier this month. At 51, I am fortunate that I got back my freedom/time from corporate America and feel very blessed that I hit my financial goals (actually outdid even my wildest goals) thanks to FIRE, saving diligently and investing and staying the course that Warren Buffett says. While I adjust to the new phase of life, I am enjoying my sons as they finish up college and high school. With that said, I wanted to know why the speaker chose to move to a lower-cost GEO vs where he worked (I think he implied Singapore or India)? When one moves, you have to re-establish your relationships with a new set of people and that personally is a mountain that I will not climb ever because I want to retire in Bay Area and not have to move to another state/city/country. How did the speaker adjust to not being near people with whom one has established some relationships over time?. The other point worth mentioning is that the top down view he talks about is hard to visualize or know. Because, one can’t predict the future or returns over 2 decades. Personally, I have spent some time thinking about the 4% rule and take yearly expenses and x 25 (4% rule) and pushed my employment to guard band that number by 50%. As you get to the exit point, you can overshoot your number by 100% based on market returns or other considerations. Meaning, it is best to prepare yourself for just 25xyearly expenses and not guard band. As to the delta that he has in capital between top-down vs bottom-up, what does he plan to do with that?
Congratulations on your retirement and exceeding your financial goals! You are right that when one moves, the social circle has to be reworked. In our case, we lived in different parts of the world during our career (India, US, UK, Europe, Japan and Singapore as the last stint) so are used to establishing relationships. In any case, our social circle is also spread over different parts of the world. Btw, cost of living was just one of our evaluation criteria for selecting our retirement location (do watch the video ruclips.net/video/r9cbQprlc6w/видео.htmlsi=VoxQeR-uGwsYDDhQ where we lay out the different criteria we used). Yes the top-down is crystal ball gazing while bottom-up is reality. The key is that the numbers work with both top-down and bottom-up. Even better if there is a buffer between both. As for the delta, we will see how that develops (or gets consumed) over the next few years and then decide. Most likely towards some charitable causes.
Really great video and kudos to your level of clarity even after two years of taking the retirement decision and not having any regrets.
Thanks a lot. Appreciate your comment
Lets take an example, personal earning 25K per month..got jackpot in sharemarket and created corpus of 3 Crores. if you take 3-4% withdrawal rate then he/she will be in safe zone to take plunge in FIRE...But do you believe he/she will take that plunge...if yes then why? if no then why? my answer will be no...what will be yours.
The answer to that would be based on a few factors, especially the age of the person. If the person is in mid / late 20s, single and early stages of career then the answer would be no. If the person is in mid / late 40s, children settled, career at peak / stagnated, then the answer would be yes.
@@TheFIREdCouple what about factors like common mans desire? person earning 25K would first like to buy 1-2 Crore rupees flat/house...buy car...foreign tour...many more before considering FIRE...
I think with that, you are mixing FIRE with Retire. Buying a house, car etc are all part of the journey to financial independence. As we keep saying in our videos - Financial Independence is a must. Retiring Early is optional.
This is brilliant. Very honest views in professional quality. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Thanks a lot. Glad you liked it
In case you are in excess of money, i can send my account number mate .
You had this gap to fill by spending more money? And why would that be a problem....because u would not end up exhausting all ur savings? Because u might be left with some extra money for the rainy day or even to donate...
Yes, the miscalculation is a happy problem to have. The point in the video is more about that its hard to spend money. So as long as people have a safe withdrawal rate and manage the lifestyle inflation, they shouldn't have the insecurity or fear of running out of money.
This is so true. There are certain expenses such as wardrobe, transportation to work and socialising coffee/ post work drinks/ lunches / dinner which go fown drastically post retirement and they are not missed at all. Instead they are replaced with healthief habits of taking up active hobbies most of which cost nothing and enjoying cookingmeals at home adding to your health and quality of existence. Identity is the toughest part of the transition and a steep learning curve. How do I get in touch?
Sure. You can get in touch. The email is in the channel info.
Enjoying your videos.. do you feel 1 more reason for expenses being less could be the lack of steady Cashflow into savings account?.. as in when the funds are tied up in investments, and there is friction to withdraw any funds from investments, mentally you would kind of think twice before spending any money..
Hmm 🤔 interesting take! Our cash flow was a mix of passive income (dividends, rental and FD interest) and liquidation of certain investments. The withdrawal of investments is always a tough one so you could be right that we were prudent on liquidation as you mention.
Sir,how much $ amt you had when you decided to retire in Thailand?
Our withdrawal rate was higher than our annual expenses that we budgeted for Thailand
Loved your calm when you talk not just the content! Looks like Thailand and meditation is working 😂
Exactly why I watched in 2x
Haha. Guess so 😀
Hello sir how you have controlled the greed of saving more money? I used to had a target of 5 crore which I have achieved this year thankfully 2.5 crore portfolio of my parents each and about 40 lakhs is my portfolio. Now I want to make it double digit that upto 10 crore….😢😢
Join the club! You are not alone in moving the goalpost. Do watch ruclips.net/video/EXNLQIs9YkE/видео.htmlsi=CI3jlImFFQYmgu2i
Thank you for sharing. Are you based in Thailand or Vietnam after FIRE or have you moved back to India?
Based in Thailand. 🇹🇭
Great video. Must needed!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I don't think you ever talked about living wealth as inheritance to kids ? If you do want to leave it to them then it doesn't matter if you spend less but it will matter if you spend more.
We did address this in some detail. Do watch the video: ruclips.net/video/Ryoxr_b-fr8/видео.html
Hi Yogi ..i totally relate to what you said in this video...everything happened like what you said when my hubby retired from his high level corporate job....luckily he has a closed knit of friends to replace colleagues!😊
Thanks for sharing your experience. This is the stage of life when the investment in that close knit of family and friends pays off!
Just found your youtube:) thanks for all your sharing ..(including your wife of course!) your retirement journey sound so eerily similar to ours! We worked in SIngapore for 7 years, London before that and now living in Australia....yes ..scratching our head where to geoarbitrage..was looking at Malaysia but the new MM2H put an end to the plan! Was in Bangkok and Chiangmai and Pattaya last year 😊but the language barrier was too much for us! Mind if i email you? Tks!
Oh wow. We went through the same process of evaluating MM2H and then discarding it due to their revised criteria.
Would love to get in touch. You can reach out on thefiredcouple@gmail.com
Thanks Yogi! Love the equation of Quality over Quantity!
Indeed. Only now I realize that we have an abundance of quantity during our professional lives
Yogi loved your video. I think we should bebeneficial if you share your excel fire calculator &yeah I know you don't want to disclose your fire no but just the calculator with arbitary values
Thanks for the idea. Will make it as a template so folks can use it to simulate their own scenarios
Everything is good about your videos but I have two questions and first one is important to know so that we may analyse how much we need if we want to spend like you. 1. What is your total corpus 2. What about your kids their education and marriage etc This will help us to understand how much we need to gather the corpus
