Redrawing THAT Peach Sprite Until I Like It (Pixel Art Timelapse)
An trend that recently took the pixel art world by storm was redrawing the original NES Princess Peach Sprite. So I took a deep dive into the decisions Nintendo made, followed the original Nintendo rules, and redrew the Peach sprite repeatedly until I got the design nailed down...and then I broke the rules to make my own version!
This was some of the most fun I've had with character design.

      Lol, whole orchard of peaches 🤣 Don't know how I didn't think of that Thanks very much! I went on such an insane deep dive on old Peach art before I even started this thing. I guess all digital art could be counted as pixel art, I think that the first method still counts in combination with handmade sprites. On its own I am unsure but I would lean more into it still counting as pixel art because it looks like pixel art and is human made, even with help of a computer. As for the second one, I would lean more into it not counting on its own but in combination with other sprites I think that also counts. Plus if you edit it by hand at all on its own I still think it counts. But in the end it doesn't really matter what it is as long as its human made and accomplishes its goal

    • @RobinsonPixels
      @RobinsonPixels 6 дней назад

      Excellent breakdown. And I do agree that "human made" is the most important component here

  • @BJGpixel

    Great workflow ideas - and I think it's definitely that case that a lot of retro games would crunch down larger paintings to get a similar efficient result. Whether something is/isn't pixel art shouldn't be dictated by whether or not every pixel was drawn with a 1px pencil, or even placed intentionally for that matter; rather, I think it's about the design philosophy and presentation. For instance, your selected index parameters and the final clean-up/editing of the outputted image brings it into a style that's cohesive for your intended usage, and pairs well with the hand-drawn character sprites - and this required your own critical eye during every step of that process ✨

    • @RobinsonPixels
      @RobinsonPixels 6 дней назад

      You worded that in ways I couldn't find to articulate. I think my biggest hangup is exactly that I didn't personally decide where the pixels would land. But it's been very fun to try to experiment with different aesthetics to see what works for me and resonates with people, while also being mindful of the time it takes. I'm not entirely certain where my pixel art journey is going to take me, but it's been nice adding so many random tools into my toolbelt

    Despite still TECHNICALLY being pixel art, I guess it's not a full on traditional pixel by pixel method, and bordering on normal low-res painting. But definitions aside, it helps get results, and artists have always used different kinds of methods to achieve them. Like how some paintings use 3D scrulpts as a base.

    So very well done! Looking like a GameBoy title I’d absolutely love to play! Have you heard of the GB Pixel Art Jam by any chance? (BJG made a video about it last year, so probably yes.) Next installment is in about a week on October 5th and runs throughout the weekend. It just slaps a single additional constraint onto the specifications that you followed here: using a maximum of 192 individual tiles (that’s what is necessary if dialogue boxes or menues want to share the screen with the background image). In a short burst of obsessiveness I had to test your Quiet Level One entry for tile numbers… which meant I scaled the image on the Kickstarter page back, mapped that green rainbow of jpg colors back onto 4, and let Aseprite break the result down into a 8×8 tileset to count the… well, tiles… (felt like more work as it reads right here). Result: 209 individual tiles. But many that’d be very easy to fix (like transpose some stuff about a single pixel, to not cross a tile’s border). P.S.: Funny coincidence when regarding your most recent video: my entry for the jam in 2023 just happened to be a “still” of a fictive insect RPG. Go, bug heros, go!

      Oh, I didn't realize that was coming up! Thanks for the heads up! I'll look into it. I've actually been doing one sprite each day for Septembit for the past month with only 4 colors each, so that's been a lot of extra Gameboy-ish practice. That's so awesome how you checked the stats on this one. I'm honestly surprised I got so close to the actual limits since I was really just working at max speed haha. Oh, cool about the bugs! Aren't they fun to design?

    • @clapostrophy

      @@RobinsonPixels Oh right, Septembit! I actually planned to attend it this year… then gracefully forgot about it. I guess strictly speaking, September is over at this point?! 4 color limitation (a lovely idea, to make 2 colours the choice of the artist!) and »monsters« the theme, damn - I may just catch up on these challenges privately. Apparently you went to the right dōjō there… and still a day and 4 hours left for GB Pixel Art Jam. You probably know that already, but this year the choice is between 4 given palettes - so the Jam went with the times and upgraded to Game Boy Color. Last but not least, I agree that bug design is a lot of fun… and I’m afraid, I got enticed already to add another party of bug warriors to my new entry. Looking forward to your Septembit beastiarium & am confident to soon enjoy a crazy-lovely Robinson contribution on that Pixel Art ROM!
