    About the dahlias, this is my first year growing dahlias, and I've done A LOT of research. Every single person says "dahlias need full sun" and "dahlias originated form Mexico". Yet out of the 10 different dahlias that I currently have (I may have gone overboard), the ones that are doing the best are the ones that are in part shade. Either sun in the morning and shade in the evening, or shade in the morning and sun in the evening. All of mine are in containers, which is convenient because I can move them around and see which light combination they'll prefer, but containers also mean that the roots will be exposed to more heat from the sun. So whether you've planted your dahlias in containers or in the ground will also make a difference. Dahlias in the ground do better with full sun than container-growing dahlias.

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy 9 часов назад

      Good morning and thank you so much for taking the time to share this comment. Yes I too have read that dahlias prefer full sun. But just like you that is not the case in my garden. All of my dahlias are in the ground and every single one that I planted in full sun is dying or not even growing past 1 foot tall. The dahlias I have in my shade have grown very tall and multiplied. Crazy right? And no, I don’t think you went overboard at all. Now that I have my growing location down, I will be going overboard next year too !!! HahahaI appreciate all of your information and knowledge. It is most helpful. 👍❤️🥰Liz

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy 19 часов назад

      Hi WayneJohn… no not at all, you do not have to bury it. That was just the method I was using at that time when I had a big dog. Now that I do not have a big dog anymore, I compost outside of the ground. ❤️🥰👍 you can pretty much compost using any method that works best for you. Underground, above ground or in tumblers. They all work.👍👍👍Liz

    Aww Liz, your garden videos are always so uplifting to the spirit, thank you for that! Kudos for braving the heat for us:). We are full-on into the rainy season in my part of Florida, so no more garden projects for this year. Between the heat and the humidity, it feels like a steam bath. I'm a fan of Vincas too:) so pretty and reliable. My plumbago is looking great it loves the heat and the rain. The veggie garden aka potager since I have plenty of herbs and flowers is still hanging in there, with luck to the end of August. My kitchen and dining area are full of bundles of drying herbs and I'm still harvesting. My experiments with heat-loving basils have paid off, so there will be plenty of tea (Chinese sweet basil-citrusy, perfect on a hot day). Lots of medicinal teas and Elderberry syrup too. I'm with you, I'm really grateful for my garden this year - it has been a blessing in a myriad of ways. Happy gardening to you!

    Hello, Liz. I love that you honor the Lord and thank Him for the beauty in your garden. We have not experienced the extreme heat, but I, too need to water daily- someone is always thirsty. We were considering putting the pots on a drip system, but were discouraged by the cost of bringing water to different parts of the backyard. (And the look of all the pipes.) So, it's me and the hose, and for those pots closest to the house under the patio overhang, it's me and the watering can. Keep cool!🌻🌻🌻

I feel bad for my garden and not keeping it looking as beautiful as I want it too. I have a question. Could you please tell me about how much of the Espoma Rose Tone Fertilizer to put in each pot of vincas? I really need to fertilize mine but I'm worried I might put too much or not enough. Your vincas are looking super beautiful!! Have a blessed day sweet lady. 🐞💐🦋

      Thank you for your kind words. I wish I could spend more time in my garden, but I work as a courtesy clerk at a grocery store and I sometimes only have enough time to water. I would put a tablespoon of fertilizer in each vinca in the pot. Because that fertilizer is organic, it’s not harsh and it doesn’t burn your plants. Me personally, I would put one tablespoon in each pot. I hope that helps. And thank you again for taking the time to visit me.🥰👍❤️Liz

But I’ll take 100 over 113 any day!!! That is so cool about your grapevine. That is such a pretty plant. You just inspired me to grow one myself. Even if it doesn’t fruit right away, it is still a beautiful plant. I’m glad you are enjoying yours.👍❤️🥰Liz

    So beautiful! 👍❤😎❤👍I learn so much from you- I didn't realize that Lumbago grows so big! This is my first year growing it and I have it in pots. I'm so in love with those bright sky blue flowers! You turned me on to Lantana and mine is in pots. I have to water at least once a day, but twice is best, or it will try to die on me. I use a good Alaska Fish fertilizer and it really seems to work. We've had 90s and 100s here and we're a dry climate, too. I've been watering the heck out of everything and so far, so good. My hubby built us a big garage and this is the first time we've had enough shade and wind shelter to actually get plants to survive out here on the prairie. Claude Barr wrote the Prairie Gardener's Bible (Jewels of the Prairie) when it comes to creating microclimates to get plants to grow here. We have extreme heat in the summer, extreme cold in the winter, and always drying, arid winds. I had to do a double take at one of your plants- wasn't expecting that! 😏😏🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤣🤣🤣

      Hello there, Denise and thank you so much for taking the time to visit me. How exciting that you love your Plumbago and Lantana. I think they might outgrow the pots with time but it sounds like you are doing a good job keeping them well wateted and fertilized like you said! I will have to try that fish fertilizer. It sounds like my plants would love it. I’ve seen other gardeners use it, but never really looked into it now you have me intrigued. I think the reason why my plumbago has not outgrown the stackable tires its in is because the bottom is hollow so the roots are able to go in the ground. They are both so beautiful and you made good choices. I hope you get many years of enjoyment from them. Thank you for the information about the Prairie Garden Bible, jewels of the Prairie. I am intrigued with that as well. Appreciate reading your comment and I hope you have a beautiful and blessed day and your garden too. Thanks again for stopping by.👍❤️🥰🙏😇Liz

    Your garden is surviving this heatwave beautifully! I am watering around midnight. It’s just too hot for me earlier in the day. I will have to plant some vinca. Yours are doing so well! Here In Bakersfield they are saying we will start cooling down on Sunday. I never thought I would be so happy to see 100-103 degrees and think it’s getting cooler haha. Crazy. You are doing a great job in your garden 🌸🌼🌺

    I think you should give your Lantana a chance. You should move them. I had some that I thought had died. I noticed a neighbor lantana had done the same the summer before. So I thought, hey, I'll leave them till spring. Then 3 out of 4 came back.

      Good morning Dolores and thank you for taking the time to comment. Yes I am digging up my lantana right now and I’m definitely going to try to save them. I’m hoping I can replant one in the tub (after I freshen up the soil) and put the others in other areas in my garden. Or at least give them away to a friend or neighbor if they don’t fit in my garden. Thanks again for taking the time to visit me.❤️🥰👍Liz

    Your garden still looks amazing although it’s 110 degrees. Watering constantly is the key but it’s not always possible. Your garden looks like you live in a far away place with no one around. 😌😌😌 so true about the hummingbirds. Hoping people will keep this in mind when feeding them. Good plans for your bench area with a trellis and plans for your tub. The white bells look gorgeous. I have the purple ones but I may have to move a few so they can grow upright. You are truly blessed and we are blessed every day by God. 🙏🙏🙏 so relaxing and fun to watch your video. Keep cool and continue to enjoy your time in your garden. 👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

    Plum bay go is the more correct pronunciation for plumbago from what I understand. For my hummingbird feeders I only fill mine about a quarter full and clean and refill daily. I try to keep them in mostly shady areas so the liquid doesn’t get so hot. I also have a couple spares and rotate them out so I can give them a good cleaning and opportunity to dry out thoroughly each day. Gotta keep our hummingbirds healthy as possible. I’m in Fresno and my zone is now 9b instead of 9a. I’m discovering some things that did fine in 9a struggle in 9b like my Shasta daisies and my four o’clocks. I’ve had the same temps as you and everything has wilted except my vincas and my geraniums.

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy 4 дня назад

      Good morning and thank you for taking the time to comment. You have some very good tips about the hummingbird feeders. I agree I think I’m going to move mine to the shade. It seems like the feeders that are in the direct sun. Definitely ferment a lot quicker. Wow, you cleaners out daily, that is such a huge commitment and I commend you and respect you for doing that. I want to quit my job so bad so I can stay home in my garden every day.Hahaha I love the idea about rotating them. That way you can just put the clean one out instantly while thoroughly cleaning the other one. That is such a great idea. You are so smart and resourceful. Yes, my Shasta daisies definitely struggled in this heat as well. I thought they were a lot more harder than that, but I’m coming to find out they are kind of little sissies.hahaha again I appreciate you taking the time to visit me and I hope you have an amazing day! ❤️👍🥰🌸Liz

      @@GardenHappy well, I retired last year so I have time. Since I don’t fill my feeders full the hummingbirds drink most of it and I’m only dumping a small amount. And yes, a couple of extra feeders makes it so easy to rotate! Although that wasn’t my idea; I was watching another RUclipsr who feeds a lot of hummingbirds and she was the one who said fill the feeders a quarter full and rotate extra feeders so the feeders dry out thoroughly so less chance of the mixture going bad. Yep, my poor little Shasta daisies are more delicate than I thought. I cut them all back yesterday and waiting to see how they do.

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy 4 дня назад

      Good idea to cut the Shasta daisies back, I’m learning about cutting them back relieves the stress and they actually grow back even stronger. Oh, by the way, I forgot to thank you for telling me how to correctly say Plum Bay Go! I had a feeling I was wrong so it’s good to know 👍👍👍 yay for you being retired. That is so awesome! Do you ever watch Robbie and Gary RUclips channel? She has is from Southern California and has thousands of hummingbirds in her garden. Along with other birds as well. She changes her hummingbird feeders a couple times a day. I’m sure you have heard of her.🤔Liz

      @katworkstowander9853 4 дня назад

      @@GardenHappy we always called it plum bay go but I confess I looked it up to see if I was pronouncing it wrong myself but everything kept coming up with the bay pronunciation. BTW I didn’t realize Canterbury bells are campanula. My mom called them campanula so when I looked up Canterbury bells I realized they are what my Mom called campanula. Who knows? Yep, I watch Robbie from Southern California, she and Gary are fascinating. I’m not sure if she or another RUclips channel( I forget the name I think I watched it only in passing) gave me the idea about the feeders. Anyway it’s nice to see a California zone 9a/b gardener on a budget.

As you know, they are much easier to keep clean, heat in the winter and cool in the summer. So cheers to our small homes. Why I have no house plants that is a very good question. Truth is Barbara I am not very good with house plants. I’ve tried growing them in the past with no success. However, I just started growing orchids inside my kitchen this year and I am doing very well with them. So perhaps there’s hope for me after all. I just get so busy in the garden and don’t grow plants inside. Your comment has inspired me to maybe change that. What house plant in your opinion is the easiest to grow? Maybe I will try that. Thanks again, Barbara for taking the time to reach out, I hope you have a beautiful day👍🥰😇🙏❤️Liz
