Make Compost at Home - The Easy Way!
Welcome Gardeners! Today I will show you how I make compost at home by burying kitchen scraps directly in the garden. In-Ground Composting (also known as Trench Composting, Pit Composting or Lazy Mans Composting) is a great compost method for beginners because it's simple, easy and nature does all the work. (That's why I like it) I simply dig a hole, dump in scraps, cover with soil, then a few weeks or months later I will have free fertilizer for my garden. Today I will show you how I do it then maybe you will be inspired to make compost for your garden too! 😀💚 Liz

    I puree raw or cooked veggie scraps and brown packing paper in the blender and pour them around the garden on top of the ground. Onion and garlic skins are also carbon. You don't need to do any dig to compost. The worms and weather take care of it. I also have four worm baskets dug into the soil where I dump puree and ripped-up cardboard. To keep dogs out, I put up a simple chicken wire fence a foot in front of the beds.

    We have done this for almost 15 years. However, hubs digs a pretty deep hole so we can dump in it for almost a week. He places a square stone over the top and then when ready to move to another place he throws a little top soil over it -- not a whole lot but maybe a half inch. We have hard red clay & this method has helped so much.

    Your backyard may be small…..gigantic in a Gardener’s eye! I’m in zone 9B also (Inland Empire). For the past couple of years by July everything is fried in my backyard. I’m going to review your past videos and see what is working for you and try. 😊

      Good morning GiGiM-1114 , thank you for taking the time to comment. I totally understand about our gardens taking their toll in July. It is so dry and hot here in the central Valley where I am and my garden really struggled this year. However, I will tell you the one thing that worked very well for me this year was Vinca. it totally stood up to the heat and bloomed all summer long. I highly recommend trying that in your garden next year . I also planted more things like agave. I am trying to find ways to make it more resilient to the summer heat! If you have any suggestions for me, I would love to hear what works well for you. Thank you again for your kind words and encouragement 👍👍👍 Liz

Does your garden in Southern California get sun, shade or both? I am happy to give you some suggestions depending on what type of sun exposure it gets. ❤️❤️❤️ Liz

      Awww you are so sweet BethMendoza! I appreciate your kind words and encouragement. This was my first time planting paper whites so I was surprised when they came up so early. But now I am learning that paper whites actually bloom in December. What a surprise to me that’s for sure I guess we are always learning something new in the garden every day right. I wish you lots of success with your garden and thanks again for taking the time to visit me. ❤️😀Liz

      Awww thank you Nell I am so glad you found that tip helpful. I had no idea either and those garden centers and nurseries sure will never tell us about that. I learned about that from watching other RUclips videos. And there is so much more information about the tropical milk weed that I didn’t share. That is very good to know. Well, I appreciate you taking the time to visit me and hope you have an amazing weekend. ❤️❤️❤️Liz

    That definitely is a happy place! My space is not much bigger as I am in a city neighborhood too but you sure have maximized the space! I don't think it's the size that matters but the way it's used. Many people have much more but don't feel blessed or happy with what they have. I love the quote: Grow where you are planted". Thanks for sharing all the lovely color you have in your zone! I can't wait for spring!

Thank you for taking the time to visit me. I sincerely appreciate your kind words and encouragement. Yes I can’t wait for spring as well. To see what blessings God brings to my garden. Thanks again for stopping by and I hope you have an amazing weekend. ❤️👍😇 Liz

Maybe I will try to dig it up and replant it somewhere else that is such a great idea. Thank you for your kind words Jasmine. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Happy New Year!!! 🌸💜😀Liz

    Good idea piling the berries in your flowerbed. It looks pretty. Also, your yard looks neat. I’m looking to get a 2 in 1 blower cum mulcher. Looks like yours is working well. Would you mind sharing details/ link for it? Thank you!

      Good morning annann-fn2zi thank you for taking the time to visit me. I’m glad to know. I’m not the only one who thinks putting the berries in the garden was a good idea. Sorry, I do not have a link to my leaf blower that was actually given to me by a family member who passed away. but I can tell you is extremely powerful and I always have to put it on the lowest setting otherwise I would probably blow the trees right out of the ground. Hahaha thanks for taking the time to comment. I hope you have an amazing new year.👍😀❤️Liz

      Good morning, my friend. I will go out into my garage today and see if my leaf blower has a label on it. By the way, it is NOT a 2 in 1 leaf blower and mulcher combination. Just thought you should know since that is what you are looking for. 👍😊 Liz

    Hi Liz - your garden is still looking so vibrant and happy even at the end of December. I've got self-seeded Nasturtiums for the first time - very exciting. If I can manage I'll plant some more seeds - herbs and flowers that like cooler weather for next year's spring garden. Happy New Year, and thanks for all the inspiration all year long!

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy 6 дней назад

      Good morning Rose it's so nice to hear from you. Yay that is so exciting that your nasturtiums love your garden so much they came back on their own!!! From my experience, it seems like the cool season flowers That reseed are always the strongest and most prolific . I believe you will be happy once they start to bloom. And I’m sure you already know this, but I have learned that nasturtium do better if you do NOT fertilize them. Fertilizer gives nasturtiums a lot of leaves, but less flowers. (hope that helps if you didnt already know) Thanks for all your support this year Rose and I hope your Nasturtiums thrive! Happy New Year! ❤️❤️❤️ Liz

    Your garden is so beautiful!😍 If you don’t mind, could you please share how you prepare your tires for planting? 🙂

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy 6 дней назад

      Good morning RobinByrdSong4408 thank you for taking the time to visit me. I appreciate your kind words and I’m happy you think my garden is beautiful even this time of year. As far as my tires go, I really do not do anything special to prepare them for planting. Basically all I do is stack one tire on top of the other then fill with soil. Of course I don’t plant any food in them because I have been told that tires can be toxic, so I always grow plants in them that I don’t eat. I know some people drill drainage holes, and I have tried that in the past, but I could not get a clean hole drilled through because of the rubber and steal threads in some. Perhaps I will make a video that answers your question better in the future. Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. I hope you have an amazing new year. 👍👍👍 Liz
