DoubleVirgo - Secretly Cruel
When I first got the "Asylum" album in '85, I thought "Secretly Cruel" sounded almost like an old KISS song. So when Sagafoo of sagafoo.com asked me to do a track for his upcoming tribute album, "Got To Foo", I thought I'd take this '80s song back to the '70s.
Upon completing the track I thought a video would be a great companion piece. So I set about getting an airplane hangar for a six-camera shoot complete with tracks, dollies and crane, a 27-man crew and a full arsenal of pyrotechnics. Then at the last minute I decided to just do it with my HandyCam in my house using a high stool as a tripod (quadrapod?). Less paperwork this way, plus I'd already spent my budget ($30) on makeup. This video comes up every once in a while in my feed and I have to watch it every time it shows up. My dad showed this to me when I was about 10-12 years old when I was getting into kiss and this is the first time I heard this song and this is the version that plays in my head whenever I think of this song, the original is great but this version you did is by far my favorite. I’m 24 now and I’m still listening to your version all these years later.

@@doublevirgo68 Well thank you for such an amazing take on a amazingly under appreciated KISS song, I live in a area where people love Rock n roll and KISS is one of the most played bands on the radio and whatnot and my knowledge of KISS gets tested every once in a while because I’m “young” but I’ve deep dove into this band more than anyone in this little area I live in. I love this band they’ll forever be my favorite. I again just wanted to say this is my favorite version of this song,Thank you for replying to me too that’s so awesome have a happy new year my man! Amazing Amazing Amazing!!!!! The original song has a 70's feeling, although the recording is fully 80's. But the way you made it, God! This is the only video on this guy's channel. Anybody know the story on "DoubleVirgo"?
I do. My name is Pete and I’m just a dude who plays music and loves KISS. About 15 years ago, a buddy of mine (Sagafoo) asked me to make a song for a tribute album he was doing. I said sure, and after a lot of thinking came up with the idea for the track. After I finished it, I thought it was pretty cool and maybe deserved a video to go along with it. Some more thinking commenced and then I hit on the idea of putting on makeup and sort of aping their movements. The whole story is much more detailed but you probably don’t want to read a book about it. My original intent was to make something that my four or five KISS buddies would find funny. They did and so did a lot of other people. And I still get a few comments every month all these years later. Why the name ‘DoubleVirgo’ and what does that have to do with KISS? It’s something my mom called me when I was a kid (my sun and rising signs are both Virgo), and absolutely nothing. That’s the very basic version of the story. If you want to know more, just ask and I’ll tell you. I’m very glad you like it and thanks for commenting.

I just wanted to get an idea of how this AWESOME version of this song came about. I had never heard that song before. I grew up with KISS (saw them live twice before they ever took off the makeup), so I consider KISS to have two parts: Part 1 - up to and including "Unmasked"; and Part 2 - everything after. I'm intimately familiar with everything in Part 1, but not so much in Part 2. I'm glad I stumbled upon your video and got to know this song. And as I said, your version is much better than KISS's "Asylum" version.
This is soooooo much better than the original by the real band. This version sounds like the KISS I grew up with and fell in love with. Damn fine job.

That’s very nice of you to say! Truth is, this was just a funny idea I had one day many years ago. I never had any intention of doing more and I definitely did not want to just do the same thing over and over. Besides, not many ‘80s Kiss songs really lend themselves to this kind of thing. They were writing in a different style. ‘Trial By Fire’ would work, but again it would just be pulling the same rabbit out of the same hat, y’know? But I’m really glad you liked this one. Wow! I just heard about this (12/2019) after listening to a Kiss podcast I found on Spotify titled "KissFAQ Podcast". This was episode 271 - Asylum's A Deadly Weapon. They (3 guys) spent 1.5 hours going track by track through the Asylum album, and when they got to Secretly Cruel, they kept referring to this Double Virgo version on RUclips, and were very complimentary. So, here I am! The mid 80's were my entry point into Kiss, and Asylum was actually the first Kiss album I purchased ... way back in the Fall of 1985. I have a fondness for these mid 80's Kiss songs ... but ... I never liked this Gene song. Sorry Gene. However, this version changes my opinion. Makes me wonder how many other mid 80's Kiss songs could have been classic 70's Kiss rockers. Excellent job to Mr Double Virgo for tapping into that 70's Ace vein and totally blowing my mind with that lead guitar work. The mid-song solo is pure classic Ace. And ... the last minute of the song contains the best guitar work Ace never did! Complete with what sounds like dual tracking (maybe ??), which sounds sooooo good. Incredible job of identifying this song's potential, diving into the song, stripping it down, and rebuilding it the way it should have been the first time. Thank you for doing this! Please don't stop!!

Kind of a combination of the ‘Christine Sixteen’ and ‘Ladies In Waiting’ end bits. Everything was designed to evoke a KISS memory of some sort. Thanks again for watching.
