I believe I have cracked theymystery, though not having read the book, and various claims on here that they are Emanual Goldstein. The conversation is overshadowed by talk of the name Goldstein, and neglects the name Emanual, Latin for Jesus. He was someone around under an old malfunctional system, there for a new one, but it is worse than the previous, no mercy, no redemption - he may have been created as an indictment against religion.

I don’t think we ever will know with any certainty. As I think Orwell said himself about the book, “Don’t let it happen.” I do think the party’s lust for power for power’s sake is truly evil.

1984 is a book about the modern world. It's not telling of some dystopian future, but rather our own. With the globalist elite controlling the world, democracy is just a reality TV show. Obama, Biden, Trump; all working together.

If I do remember correctly, I believe one of the factors was that the war was never meant to be won. The army IS the police, POWs are dissidents of the system, and Veterans are either state actors or police that were putting down rebel cells. For better context Orwell was also very disillusioned by Stalin and the UK, it's not far fetched that in this universe airstrip 1 (UK) still has their imperial holdings of India and Hong Kong they take people from there as pows and support their claims of a war. Orwell during ww2 was a propagandist in the UK tasked to gain support from India. He saw the UK and Stalin as fascist racist hypocrites that claimed to be diverse only because they colonized so alot of world.

I don't think a state like Oceania could work for very long in practice because the Party systematically chases down and "cures" (or just outright kills) more or less all intelligent individuals since it perceives them as the biggest threats to its power. But how can you have a big and complex economy if you only have an unintelligent and uneducated workforce? And without a sophisticated economy you cannot produce telescreens, helicopters and other means which keep the population under control.

Much like all totalitarian governments, Oceania would eventually fall. They couldn't keep up the facade forever. The movie shows that Winston writes down his memories in a notebook, which he keeps hidden. I'm sure many more subjects do this as well and the lies just fall apart.

I think there is only one way, and that's: think orthodox 😂 in the book it says that there is no difference between a thoughtcrime (thinking "Down with the Big Brother" and writing it down on a diary). What you say in your sleep is something else entirely..

I always that the amount of cooperation required to maintain ingsoc was antithetical to the paranoia of the party. If people are just trying to survive, they're not going to be creative and adapt to the changes and challenges that come with an organization that large. I also thought that change would come from the top, not the bottom. It would be impossible for the three nation states to be completely in cahoots, and you also have the navigating of people within the party to assume control over it, which creates political conflict and even violent conflict internal to the party. It would require a lot of work to keep the charade going, and I don't see why anyone would be invested in maintaining it.

I have no idea y people dont worry about the cult of personality Trump has built currently. When has a large portion of the population having unwavering loyalty to a leader they wont even entertain the idea he could possibly be wrong or untruthful ever worked out well? I even think Trump is gonna do a better job then kamala but the amount of people who do and believe anything he says without question is what makes me worry. If he wanted a 3rd term and sent out a message telling his supporters to arm themselves and take control of government buildings a scary amount of people would 100% do it and that should be a concern to everyone.

Stop treating Orwell as a hero. Isn’t it wonderful how the great patriotic lover of liberty Orwell wrote satires of socialism and the Soviet Union … an ally of his own flippin country during WWII and could never seem to be bothered once to satirize fascism and the Nazis or show how his own country’ two centuries of crazed capitalist imperialism caused the world wars and the rise of fascism, and how his own nation’s business leaders really had no problem with Hitler and the Nazis and half of its bloody aristocracy had been ready to jump in bed with fascists and Hitler since the early 1930s; in fact pretty much right up until he invaded France. Orwell is no great hero of anything. He’s just a typical liberal apologist for fascism and hysterical fear monger about communism and class traitor promoting hatred of his own British working class. Stop venerating the man like some kind of saint for sanity. He even sexually assaulted a young woman perhaps a minor in his young manhood and served as a colonial police officer dispensing imperialist “justice” on the colonized. NOT A HERO.

I've been rereading the book and this was one of the things I wanted to reevaluate. I really want to believe that their love story was true, but I can't shake the feeling that she was a honeypot put into place by O'Brian.

Funny how it is supposed to be a tale of warning but you already are in such a world. The world has already been delivered into the hands of those who made it this way some time before most of us were even born. And all this while you think you're venerating heroes, saints and the just cause of "saving the world" but you've just helped the world get handed to the most psychotic group of people who ever walked this earth. Sure, the control might not be as ham-fisted as in the book but the control is there, albeit more subtle. And ofc, with the constant imprint of your supposed enemies in your brain thru the repetition of color schemes and patterns. Delivered to you thru the television, movies and books. Every day that passes this is evermore a world of fantasy. Specially in what we call "the West".

INGSOC = English socialism. In my mind I like to think that Equilibrium would seen as a sequel of sorts to 1984,Winstons revenge.....

Unless conditioning and mind control were very, very thorough, one would have to believe that 'self-deletion' would be more common than supposed. But in Oceania, there would be no public notification that so-and-so did this. They would just disappear and be forgotten.

It's the system. If people ever thought there was any escape they would have to be unpersoned for the good of big brother.

There is no feasible way for an outer party member to escape the BB and live.

Another to think of is they have been indoctrinated that escape of any kind is impossible. If you don't believe something can happen, you will not try it. The opposite of the scene where Winston is told something along the lines of 'Belief is all. If you believe I float and I believe I float, then I float'.

I think I have found the meaning of the phrase "freedom is slavery". Those who were free from the telescreen and the thought police were the proles, who however were slaves, treated like production animals. At the same time, party members were free from slavery (they held regularly paid work and probably with some kind of welfare) but were slaves in matters of personal, social and political relationships.

Why did george orwell name the book 1984

Winstons summary made perfect sense to me. Symes was able to work out and understand the parties reasons for creating Newspeak and having the articulation to be able to explain this in simple terms could be dangerous if he did ever turn against BB. Better to be an unseen wolf among sheep in 1984
