They (Frank Black) were inspired by Husker Du, old Christian Rock stuff, The Stooges - all kinds of mad stuff, hence their unique and strange style. Kim Deal answered an ad for a bassist that read: "Band seeks bassist into Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul and Mary. Please - no chops."
An odd detail I just noticed about this song is that he uses the words "leg of hope" at one point. Those excat words are also used in "Add it up" by the Violent Femmes. I´m not native speaker but I´ve never seen it used elsewhere so just thought it was odd and wanted to point it out. I´m not really sure it means anything. I know Frank Black liked that band to, so maybe he was thinking about those lyrics when he wrote the song

I constantly find myself back here and I just noticed that you’d posted lyrics that I’ve always been curious about and I’m not sure, but I always thought he said “my work is so hard”, “father rides the train down to the neck tie world”, “brother plays guitar, he’s a pleasure to hear”, and “got rock’n’roll curls and speakers in his ears” not sure though! Those lines are particularly hard to decipher and there’s no source I can find with definitive lyrics. 🤷🏼♂️ 🤔 👍🏼✌🏼
