It’s hard to explain that “Katoey” is a polite word or not because it’s still controversial among Thai people too. Mostly, Katoey is used to called transwomen but some cis gay men defines themselves as Katoey too. Katoey used to give a negative vibe in the past (homophobic) , so some people might suggest you not to use it, and used the word “Sao-song” (literally meaning is “second type women” But now many trans and people in lgbt communities encouraging people to use the word “Katoey” or “หญิงข้ามเพศ” (formal word for transwomen) because they want to erase the negative narrative of the word “Katoey” and the “Sao-song”, in contrary, sounds more discriminating because it has the sense that you rate transwomen as a second grade women.
